  • OpenAI has announced the launch of GPT-4o, the company’s new AI model.
  • GPT-4o is faster than GPT-4 and improves its capabilities across text, voice, and vision.
  • OpenAI has also announced that several paid features will now be available to free users.
ChatGPT maker OpenAI at its Spring update on Monday made several big announcements, including the launch of GPT-4a, a new AI model that works as a voice assistant, the availability of several paid features to free users of ChatGPT and more.

GPT-4o is a new model that OpenAI claims will revolutionise the way we interact with AI. It can handle complex questions and provide personalised suggestions more effectively.

One of the most exciting aspects of the GPT-4o model is its "omni" capability, which refers to its ability to handle text, speech, and video inputs. This means that users can interact with the AI in a more natural and intuitive way, making for a more seamless and engaging experience.

The new model represents a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering faster response times and enhanced capabilities across a range of tasks. According to OpenAI, GPT-4o is better than any existing model at understanding and discussing images.

GPT-4o availability

OpenAI has announced that GPT-4o will be initially available for ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise users next on the list. Free users will get access to the latest AI model after a while.

OpenAI has also announced that several existing features, that were only available to paid users will now be available to free ChatGPT users as well, with a limit.

GPT-4o features

The new GPT-4o model brings improved text, speech and vision capabilities to ChatGPT. The company claims that the new model feels more “natural”. Users can now even capture images and ask GPT-4o to translate their contents.

“Today, GPT-4o is much better than any existing model at understanding and discussing the images you share. For example, you can now take a picture of a menu in a different language and talk to GPT-4o to translate it, learn about the food's history and significance, and get recommendations. In the future, improvements will allow for more natural, real-time voice conversation and the ability to converse with ChatGPT via real-time video,” said OpenAI in its blog post.

ChatGPT also now supports more than 50 languages, including several Indian languages.

Features available to free users with GPT-4o

  • Discover and use GPTs and the GPT Store
  • Get access to GPT-4
  • Get responses from both the model and the web
  • Analyse data and create charts
  • Chat about photos you take
  • Upload files for assistance summarising, writing or analysing
  • Build a more helpful experience with Memory
Do note that there is a limit on the number of messages that free users can send. This limit depends on the usage and demand of GPT-4o at that particular time period. Once the limit is reached, ChatGPT will automatically switch to GPT-3.5.

Paid users will have a five times higher limit than free users. Teams and Enterprise users have an even higher limit with their subscriptions.

The company has also announced the launch of a new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS users.

The announcement was made just a day before Google’s I/O event. Google is scheduled to host the I/O annual developer conference at 10:30 PM on May 14.
