Guwahati, May 3 () Assam Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal on Sunday said the threat of COVID-19 is not over andappealed to the people of the state to make the third phase ofthe lockdown a success.

Addressing a press conference here, Sonowal urged thepeople of the state to make the third phase of the lockdownsuccessful like the first two phases.

"Though the state government will allow relaxationsfor certain sectors from May 4 following the guidelines by theCentre to restart economic activities, people must not becomplacent as the threat of COVID-19 is not over," he added.

The Centre has extended the lockdown by two weeks fromMay 4.

Sonowal underlined the importance of maintainingsocial distancing norms, wearing of face masks, frequent handwashing and observing cleanliness as absolute necessity duringthe lockdown period and beyond to overcome the challenge posedby the pandemic.

Sonowal urged the people to support and motivate allthose working at the frontline in this fight against COVID-19as their dedicated service will be required in this longbattle.

"Emergency and essential service providers are thereal warriors and they must be appreciated for theirservices," he added.

When asked about the impact of the lockdown on thestate's economy, Sonowal said the government has constitutedan eight-member economic advisory committee, led by retiredbureaucrat Subhash Das, to provide recommendations to bringthe state's economy back on track through systematicinterventions.

On academic losses to the student community, the chiefminister said he had held a telephonic conference with 2,645professors and associate professors of 11 universities thismorning and sought their opinions regarding the prevailingsituation.

He called on the university teachers to devise astrategy to teach those students in rural areas, who do nothave access to internet connection or smartphones while at thesame time maintaining social distancing norms. TRRG RG
