  • Spring weather can be hard to predict, so a versatile jacket is essential for surviving the season.
  • Designers and stylists told Business Insider to ditch outdated trends, like varsity jackets.

Spring weather can be fickle. One day it's warm and sunny, the next is wet and windy. Having the right jacket is key for comfort and style.

The start of the season brings a surge of shoppers to retailers — and when refreshing your wardrobe, you'll want to make sure the pieces you pick up are on trend.

Business Insider spoke with fashion designers and stylists to find out which jackets are in and out this spring.

According to fashion designer Jarrah Webster a lightweight jacket with distinct, colorful paneling is a great choice for spring.

This season, trending colors include muted, earthy tones rather than neon or bright hues.

"It's such a simple, sleek design that isn't oversaturated with color, and it's very versatile and can be worn with anything," he told BI.

Windbreakers, which have cycled in and out of style for decades, are coming back into the spotlight, according to fashion designer Jazmin Monét.

"Although windbreaker jackets were very popular in the '90s, we've seen a resurgence in this style," she told BI.

Today's versions come in pretty much any color under the sun, with varying fabric weights to suit personal preferences.

Long trench coats are a classic silhouette that will continue to be seen all over this spring, according to celebrity stylist Semarah Gabrielle.

"This is a staple spring look, and it gives a quiet-luxury vibe that I've noticed people leaning toward this year," she told BI.

Instead of oversized, puffy jackets, Webster said cropped, fitted jackets are the new trend. Many also have other features, such as double zips and unique collars.

"I've noticed popularity in jackets that are formfitting, and it's nice to not have something too big where it looks like one is swimming in it," he said.

In line with the popular "gorpcore" trend (wearing outerwear typically designed for recreation as streetwear), hardshell jackets continue to be popular.

Webster said the jackets are evolving this season with new materials, such as canvas.

The outer layer of convertible jackets from brands like Arc'teryx or Columbia is typically water-resistant yet breathable, which makes it a perfect match for spring weather.

"Hard shell jackets, in general, are great, and it's nice to see them being made out of innovative and unorthodox materials," the designer told BI.

After decades of popularity, denim jackets are continuing their strength in terms of trendiness, according to Monét.

"For both men and women, you can never go wrong with a denim jacket," she told BI. "You'll see a variety of them, sometimes distressed or in light, dark, and acid washes."

Secondhand fashion is very prevalent, and according to Gabrielle, a recently desirable find is leather bomber jackets.

The silhouette can also be found new, but the vintage look adds a nice slouchiness and worn-in element that complements both dressy and casual outfits.

Unlike thick puffer coats that remain popular, the fitted version with less filling is no longer a huge trend, according to Webster.

"The trend isn't visually appealing anymore, and it's becoming less and less original," he told BI.

Although motorcycle-inspired leather jackets were a huge trend in mainstream fashion, they're quickly falling out of the spotlight, according to Gabrielle.

"I've noticed that this silhouette is way too overplayed, and I feel like the trend quickly became super saturated," she said.

Leather and faux leather are great materials for jackets. But according to Webster, punk-inspired leather jackets with large lapels and asymmetrical, double zippers are falling behind on the trend cycle.

"There's too much going on with these, and I believe they fit an era that isn't prevalent right now," the designer told BI.

According to Gabrielle, varsity jackets have had their run. But it's coming to an abrupt stop.

"The style is nostalgic, but I feel like they come off as too juvenile when trying to style them as an adult with a more sophisticated outfit," she said.

Comfortable clothes have been extremely popular for the past few years, but Gabrielle said oversized jackets are becoming a bit much.

"We're going a little oversized-crazy," she told BI. "It can look chic, but some pieces make it look like the person is swimming in their clothes, and that's not the purpose of an oversized look."
