Ethan Hawke says he didn't tell his daughters he was appearing in Taylor Swift's "Fortnight" music video.

"You tell my teenage daughters that I'm going to meet Taylor, and everybody at school is going to know," Hawke said during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Monday. "No, I signed an NDA."

The actor also joked that "the look on their faces was one of profound disappointment" once they learned about his cameo.

"'Don't pay attention to my dad. My dad is an idiot. You should be calling me,'" Hawke said, mimicking his daughters' reactions. "Taylor belongs to them. I can't have that on them, so I had to low-key it."

Hawke has four children: two kids with his ex-wife, Uma Thurman, and two daughters with his wife, Ryan Hawke.

The "Before Sunrise" star also described what it was like trying to keep his cameo a secret from the world ahead of the video's release.

"You can't imagine what it's like to walk through an airport with a friend you've known for 35 years, and you grew up with, and watch all the young people in the airport with their Eras sweatshirts on and their Taylor Swift things, and we got something on them," Hawke said. "We're going to meet the queen ourselves."

"Fortnight" — featuring Post Malone — is the first single from Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," released on April 19.

Hawke reunited with his "Dead Poets Society" costar, Josh Charles, for the music video, in which they both starred as scientists conducting experiments on Swift. Malone also appeared in the music video as Swift's love interest.

"We laughed ourselves silly the whole day," Hawke said. "We felt like the biggest rockstars in the world."

Despite a subdued promotional strategy, "The Tortured Poets Department" broke records on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music soon after its release.

According to a post on X by Spotify, "Fortnight" also became the platform's "most-streamed song in a single day" on April 19.

The track has been at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for two weeks, drawing 38.2 million official streams and 33.3 million radio airplay audience impressions in the US in the second week.

A representative for Hawke did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
