Everything we know about the Beckhams' close friendship with the British royal family that spans decades
  • David and Victoria Beckham have known the royal family since the late '90s.
  • David has spoken publicly about his close friendship with Prince William.

David Beckham's new Netflix docuseries, "Beckham," looks back on the former soccer player's rise to fame and his relationship with his wife, Victoria.

But one thing the series doesn't cover is the couple's close relationship with the British royal family.

David, a self-described royalist, has spoken publicly about his friendship with Princes William and Harry, and he and Victoria were guests at the brothers' respective royal weddings.

More recently, David waited in line for more than 12 hours to see the late Queen Elizabeth's coffin at Westminster Abbey in September 2022. The monarch died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022.

The Beckhams and the royals have been friends since the '90s

Victoria Beckham first met the then-titled Prince Charles in May 1997, the same year she met her future husband.

Victoria and her Spice Girls bandmates were introduced to the prince after performing at a gala for his charity, The Prince's Trust.

In a video of the meeting shared on YouTube, Victoria can be seen shaking Charles' hand and introducing herself, while her bandmates took a bolder approach. Mel B and Geri Halliwell both kissed the royal on the cheek, and Halliwell told Charles she found him "very sexy."

The band met the prince again in Johannesburg a couple of months later in November, this time with Prince Harry in attendance.

"It is the second greatest moment in my life," Charles said, according to a BBC News article published at the time. "The greatest was the first time that I met them."

Victoria went on to meet the royal family at various charity events throughout the years, and in July 2000, she and David attended Party in the Park at London's Hyde Park to raise funds for The Prince's Trust. Victoria performed at the event and she and David were photographed chatting with Charles backstage, as shown in a BBC News article published at the time.

Meanwhile, David first met Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 and received an OBE award from the monarch the following year, The Mirror reported in September 2023. The award is given to those who have a major local role in any given activity, including those known nationally for their work, according to the UK Government website.

Victoria was granted the same award by Prince William in 2017 for her contributions to the fashion industry, BBC News reported.

David has spoken publicly about his friendship with William and Harry

Victoria and David's relationship with the royals appeared to be more formal in the beginning. But as the years went on, their friendship with William and Harry in particular grew closer.

David and Victoria attended William's wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 and Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.

David spoke about his friendship with the brothers during an interview with Esquire in 2012. In a portion of the interview cited by The Telegraph, David said he had a "normal relationship" with the brothers and that he bonded with them over sports.

In July 2022, David and William appeared in a video together to promote the Mentally Healthy Football Declaration which was signed by leaders in the soccer community to create a "mentally healthy culture" in the industry, Sky News reported at the time.

More recently, the Beckhams' personal relationship with the royals appears to be going strong.

David supported William by attending the Earthshot Prize Awards in Boston in December 2022. The prince created the awards in 2020 in order to recognize those dedicated to finding "innovative solutions to the world's greatest environmental challenges," the website states.

Meanwhile, David gifted King Charles a jar of homemade honey at an event that took place a couple of days after the coronation in May 2023, according to Vanity Fair.
