After months of swirling rumours, Xbox has finally lifted the curtain on an array of new hardware upgrades for both the Xbox Series X and S, set to hit shelves towards the end of 2024. This revelation came during the much-anticipated Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, where Microsoft announced their latest offerings.

At the forefront of the announcement was an all-digital version of the Xbox Series X, gleaming in “robot white”. Equipped with 1TB of storage, it mirrors the speed and capabilities of the traditional Series X but omits the disc drive. Priced at $449.99, this new model is $50 cheaper than its disc-compatible counterpart.

Joining the lineup is a revamped Xbox Series S, now featuring 1TB of storage—doubling the capacity of the original Series S. In a sleek colour change, this console will be available in the familiar shade of carbon black but with the updated specs. It is set to retail at $349.99.

However, the most eye-catching addition is the special edition Xbox Series X in “galaxy black”, boasting 2TB of storage. This model's design features a starry pattern in silver, grey and green, resembling a celestial night sky. Priced at $599.99, it comes with a matching controller and will be available only in limited quantities.

This refresh of the Xbox hardware lineup is expected to bolster sales, positioning Xbox more competitively against Sony's PlayStation 5.

In India, pricing details remain under wraps, with Xbox's official statement advising fans to “check back in the coming months for market availability and regional Estimated Retail Pricing (ERP) when we share pre-order details”.

Beyond hardware, the event also dazzled with game trailers, including the next chapter in the beloved ‘Call of Duty’ series. Highlights also included ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’, continuing the storied ‘Doom’ saga, and a preview of the latest ‘Gears of War’ game, which ends a five-year hiatus for the franchise.

Many of these new titles will debut on Xbox Game Pass, highlighting Microsoft's commitment to its subscription model.

As the gaming industry faces a downturn with declining sales, layoffs and studio closures, this strategy, along with the latest releases displayed at the Games Showcase, could be key to attracting and retaining players.
