Well known food critic
Osama Jalali has just kicked off his new venture- Masala Trail by
Osama, a 100% vegetarian restaurant. This isn’t any surprise factor in it. For a man who has loved food and written about it all through his life, this was something was waiting to happen. For
Jalali, being an entrepreneur happened after quite some rehearsals like curating Rampur’s traditional cuisine with his mother, Nazish Jalali.
Aptly named, this restaurant serves food from all over the country. From
Banarasi Kachori Subji to
Kolkata’s street noodles, you get everything, mostly from the streets of India.
With an interior exaggerated with benarasi saree, vending carts and lozenges of yesteryears, this like a fair with good food. What’s unusually good to see were the waiters wearing badges with names like Bhaiyya, Khan Saab,
Anna and Kake. So every time you need to ask for a reorder and you give odd calls like ‘pschh’ or ‘chssch’, relax you can just call them by their names.
As we settled ourselves, Anna came with a cold surprise, Jigar Thanda. Well this is a refreshing beverage made from rooh afza-ice cream. For starters we ordered, Littli Chokha, Tower Chaat and Gujrati Pankti.
Well, Tower Chaat is a must try. Imagine your favourite
Purnaai Dilli ka Chaat being served in an ice cream sundae style. Delicious would be an understatement.
For main course we were served a special Mysore Dosa, Gujarati Khichadi and
Marathi Tawa Pulao. And the dessert arrived as
Matka Kulfi.
Overall the journey of gastronomy was delicious and is easy on the pocket.
