Burari is an assembly constituency located within the precincts of the North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. This Vidhan Sabha seat faced its general elections for the Delhi assembly in 2015 and will see the next elections in February 2020 as the term of the present government is ending on 22 February 2020. The total number of voters in Burari assembly seat is 288380 which is composed of 162880 men, 125486 women and 14 third gender voters.
In 2015 assembly elections, AAP’s Sanjiv Jha bagged this constituency securing 124724 votes. He overtook his opponent Gopal Jha of BJP who could score 56774 votes in the said elections. Hence Sanjeev Jha is the sitting MLA of the Burari constituency. He has been holding this seat on behalf of AAP over the past two terms.
In 2013 elections, Sanjeev Jha scored 60164 votes defeating BJP candidate Krishan who scored 49813 votes. Earlier in 2008 elections, the BJP had captured this seat for a five year term since Sri Krishan representing the party got 32006 votes winning over Deepak Tyagi of INC who scored 27016 votes in these elections. Over the past three terms, BJP had this seat from 2008 to 2013 and then AAP is holding this Vidhan Sabha seat from 2013 to February 2020. We see that right from the inception of the party, AAP has been doing quite well in this assembly constituency of Delhi Vidhan Sabha and Sanjeev Jha has been the most popular candidate retaining the seat for two full terms.
