Former cricket player Gautam Gambhir has been able to replicate his success in the field of politics as well.

As Delhi assembly elections are fast approaching, Gambhir might not play the field this time - but will still have a lot to say - from the box.

He forayed into politics during the 2019 general elections when the BJP government gave him a ticket from East Delhi. The cricketer went on to win the seat by defeating Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely by 3.91 lakh votes and AAP’s Atishi by 1.71 lakh votes.

The Jalebi controversy

Since the win, Gambhir has been in the spotlight. He was subject to much criticism when the MP missed the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Urban Development meeting to discuss the rising air pollution crisis in the national capital.

He was instead spotted gorging on jalebis with fellow commentator and former cricketer VVS Laxman during the India-Bangladesh cricket match in Indore. As the - Nero fiddled while Rome was burning - anger set in, Gambhir quickly released a statement - went on to say he was “petrified of eating jalebis”.

Recently, Gambhir inaugurated an air purifier tower prototype in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar. But given his popularity, he is also rumoured to be a possible Chief Ministerial candidate from the BJP.

In fact, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took to Twitter to wish a happy new year to seven Delhi CM candidates from the BJP and included Gambhir in the post.

Commenting on the Delhi elections, Gambhir recently told ANI that he is excited about it as “the people of Delhi are desperate and BJP will be able to fulfil all the promises which have been made in the past."
