According to a DOE statement, Princeton has entered into a resolution agreement that acknowledges the university has updated its policies to comply with Title IX. It does not appear that Princeton will face any punishment for the Title IX violations.
The investigation was prompted by three student complaints alleging the university "discriminated, on the basis of sex, by failing to adopt and publish grievance procedures that provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of student complaints of sex discrimination/harassment, including sexual assault," according to the DOE statement. Additionally, the students claimed Princeton "failed to respond appropriately" to their sexual assault complaints against other students.
According to the DOE statement:
[The Office for Civil Rights] determined that the University's prior grievance procedures failed to comply with the requirements of Title IX. OCR also determined that the University failed to provide a prompt and equitable response to complaints of sexual harassment, including sexual assault/violence, as required by Title IX, as well as Student 1's, 2's, and 3's complaints of sexual harassment/violence. OCR further determined that for Student 1, this failure allowed for the continuation of a hostile environment that limited and denied her access to the education opportunities at the University.
We reached out to Princeton, which said it will be releasing a statement soon. We will update the post with that statement when it's available.
More than 80 colleges are currently under investigation for Title IX violations.
