Mumbai, June 8 (IANS) Soon, you may be able to withdraw cash from an <keyword id="48577" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ATM">ATM</keyword> without touching any part of the machine. AGS Transact Technologies, a provider of cash and digital payment solutions and automation technology, on Monday said it has successfully developed and tested a touchless ATM solution in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 'contactless' solution, currently under demo at interested banks, enables a customer perform all the steps required to withdraw cash from an ATM using the mobile app itself. The customer simply has to scan the QR code displayed on the ATM screen and follow the directions on their respective bank's mobile application. This includes entering the amount and mPIN required to dispense the cash from the ATM machine. According to the company, the QR code feature makes cash withdrawals quicker and more secure, and negates the chances of compromising the ATM Pin or card skimming. "The new Touchless ATM solution is an extension of the flagship QR Cash solution which ensures safety of the users and will provide a seamless cash withdrawal experience with enhanced security," said Ravi B. Goyal, Chairman and MD, AGS Transact Technologies Ltd. With minimum investment, the banks can enable this solution for their ATM networks by upgrading the existing software. AGSTTL has so far installed, maintained and managed a network of over 72,000 ATMs across the country and also provides customised solutions to leading banks. The company earlier introduced UPI-QR based Cash withdrawal solution in partnership with Bank of India. This is how the solution works. Open the Bank mobile application on your smartphone and select QR Cash Withdrawal. Enter the amount you wish to withdraw on the mobile app and scan the QR code on the ATM screen. Next, confirm the amount by clicking on 'proceed' in the app and enter the mPin to authenticate the transaction. Now collect the cash and receipt and you are done. "We are still loading less than 70% of the full capacity of ATMs and there are concerns around the (inadequate) supply of Rs 100 denomination notes," chief executive of one of India's biggest ATM manufacturing companies, which also manages ATMs, told ET. 
 The reason of the <keyword id="3888095" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cash-crunch-in-ATMs">cash crunch in ATMs</keyword> is attributed to high withdrawals towards the end of a financial year. 
 
"Every year we usually see a spike in supply of currency notes to meet this higher demand. The demand this year has been high as usual, but there was no increase in supply, causing a serious cash shortfall across the country," another top executive with a cash logistics company responsible for transporting cash and managing ATMs told ET, adding “Usually we see about 35% of the entire cash supply for the month of March happening in the fourth week. But that much cash was not supplied this year.”

 However, start-ups are now dropping popular phrases like 'growth over profit' and 'winner take all', as they look forward to adopting new ones which would help them get their 'unit economics' right and reduce the '<keyword id="3310044" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cash-burn-rate">cash burn rate</keyword>'. 
 
Not only have investors made it hard to get money out, they are also constantly fretting about returns, making start-ups remember about the bottom line. This is why, wiser start-ups are reducing the amount of money they spend in growing their business, which is called the burn rate, and are sharpening their focus on the core business. 
 
"Across all companies both within our portfolio and outside it, it is twice as normal to see burn rate levels in January and February that are half or one-third of their peak levels," Mohit Bhatnagar, MD at Sequoia Capital told ET. Sequoia Capital has backed hyper-local delivery startup Grofers, restaurant listings service Zomato and budget hotel aggregator Oyo. 
 In a wider perspective, 'Cash burn rate' is the measure of <keyword id="663681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="negative-cash-flow">negative cash flow</keyword> in a company. Earlier, start-ups used it as a weapon to outgun their rivals in a bid to gain the maximum market share and pump up growth. This was possible because investors were pumping in huge cash into the company. However, gone are the days of such glory. 
 
India’s e-commerce giants<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Flipkart-vs-Snapdeal-E-commerce-giants-tremble-under-investors-pressure/articleshow/51581261.cms"> Flipkart and Snapdeal </a>have already started to take this into consideration, by reducing the cash burn rate by over one-third. 
 
However, when it comes to smaller start-ups, it leads to some drastic changes, which could either mean shutting down operations in some cities or laying off staff. 
 
"The cost of running a business has to be reduced as there are innate inefficiencies that have crept in," said Sreedhar Prasad, a partner specialising in ecommerce and start-ups at KPMG. "Costs will have to be cut in areas like salaries, duplication of work within departments and reducing cost of operations." 
 
To raise more capital, companies are also monitoring costs and improving unit economics. "Focus has completely shifted from top line &amp; revenues to sustainability. Across all costs like operations, marketing and recruitment we are carefully evaluating return on investment," said Taskbob CEO Aseem Khare. 
 
Talking of online retailers, they bring down burn rates by cutting discounts, reducing dependence on low-margin categories, building efficiencies on logistics and reducing cash returns through online wallets.

As funding gets tough, e-commerce giants are lowering ‘cash burn rate’

BofA Merrill Lynch strategist Mary Ann Bartels is out with her quarterly hedge fund monitor this week, taking a look at what the funds did in Q4.
The biggest takeaway, according to Bartels: "Hedge Funds are fully invested with <keyword id="37885" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cash">cash</keyword> levels down to 4.6% in 4Q’12."

Based on the quarterly 13F filings and estimated short positions of the equity holdings of 895 funds, we estimate that hedge funds raised net exposure by 10% to $418 billion notional in 4Q12 – setting a new record. Percentage-wise, we put equity net exposure at 55% at the end of 4Q12, compared to the 2Q07 peak of 59%.
Gross exposure rose by 1.8% to $1150bn notional in 4Q12. Percentage-wise, gross exposure stayed at about 150%.
Meanwhile, cash holdings fell to 4.6% from 5.0%, below the historical average of 8-10% but above the 2007 trough of 4.3%.

Goldman Sachs' David Kostin included this useful chart in a recent presentation to clients. 
As you can see, companies have been increasingly returning cash to shareholders in the form of dividends and buybacks. Furthermore, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-value-of-share-buybacks-2013-3">buybacks generally represent a bigger source of cash distribution</a> than dividends.

According to Moody's, non-financial corporations are sitting on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-compensation-and-dividends-2013-3">around $1.5 trillion worth of cash</a>.
Bulls argue that this means companies could unleash this cash in the forms of capital expenditures, mergers and acquisitions, dividends, and share buybacks.
However, Citi High Grade Credit Strategist Jason Shoup thinks this assessment is a bit short-sighted.
"When it comes to popular finance myths, cash hoarding by corporates may be one of the most perpetuated," he says. "What's misguided is the narrative, in our view, in particular among equity investors. What we most take issue with is the implication that corporates have lots of cash to return to shareholders. Indeed, there's plenty of data to the contrary that challenges the prevailing notion that corporates are the picture of good health."
Shoup argues that we need to consider cash relative to other financial metrics.
For example, he looks at cash relative to debt, which is considered a proxy for a company's a ability to service its liabilities.
"That ratio is rapidly plunging and, at least to our minds, implies that further shareholder friendly behavior will likely be funded with more borrowing at the margin," he writes.
