Chandigarh, Apr 6 () A former village sarpanch of Jind district, noted for his 'selfie with daughters' initiative and many other pro-women campaigns in Haryana, is busy these days waging a multi-pronged battle against coronavirus, ranging from sanitising villages to using khap's directives to enforce social distancing.Sunil Jaglan, the former head of Bibipur village in Jind district, is currently working in the rural hinterland of his district, besides those of Gurgaon and Nuh, taking several innovative initiatives with help of volunteers since imposition of nationwide lockdown.Earlier in 2015, Jaglan had launched the 'selfie with daughters' initiative to give boost to the Centre's flagship Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising his effort on various platforms. Jaglan has two daughters who study in a school in Jind with the elder one being a class four student and the younger one of class one.Sharing details of his present initiatives, Jaglan said he is busy encouraging people staying indoors to undertake various constructive works ranging from teaching children to helping their spouses in household chorus apart from doing meditation and pursing their creative inclinations on art and craft front. "I specially ask people to teach their children new things and tell them how to face challenging situations such as this one in their lives," said Jaglan."We are also working with Gram Panchayats in sanitisation drives," he said.He said being associated with 'khaps' or caste councils, which exercise considerable influence in rural areas of the state, he has also been utilising their services to nudge people to follow social distancing norms and strictly avoid sharing 'hookahs' to avoid the risk of infection."As many as 350 volunteers are working with me on these various initiatives," Jaglan told over the phone."We have created 150 WhatsApp groups in rural areas. We regularly keep a tab on vital information on COVID from authentic sources like government agencies or WHO and circulate these on the groups which helps villagers to remain updated. Besides, information from the government bodies which is relevant in a particular area is also provided," he said.With social distancing critical to preventing spread of coronavirus, Jaglan said, "We have tried to raise awareness among villagers on how vital it is to win over this battle against the disease. With harvesting season on, we tell them to maintain social distancing when they work in fields or hire labourers for the job."Jaglan and his team of volunteers are also helping out students, especially those from class one to five by searching for relevant lectures uploaded on Youtubers and sharing them with the students or their parents."As children, especially younger ones, get impatient being restricted indoors during the lockdown, we search for relevant lectures and fun activities uploaded by the Youtubers and share their links directly with children so that so they could be benefitted," he said.For Gurgaon and Nuh districts, Jaglan says he has tied up with a Rajasthan-based clinic, where a doctor gives online consultancy free of charge to those facing any kind of emergency."We are also working on the mental health aspect as we have found that some people are developing a kind of phobia due to coronavirus," he said.In Muslim-dominated Mewat in Nuh, 28 of his volunteers are working to raise awareness in the community about COVID."Initially, we found that many people, including children, used to go to mosques to offer prayers. We tried to persuade many that during this crisis people of all faiths should offer prayers at home as crowds provide a fertile ground for the spread of coronavirus infection," he said. “Your vote is important. If you give me another chance to serve you, it will add 10 years to my life,” Badal, who is actively reaching out to people across Punjab through his ‘Sangat Darshan’ programmes across rural and urban areas, has been telling the people in recent weeks. 
 Punjab’s ruling <keyword id="6357030" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shiromani-Akali-Dal">Shiromani Akali Dal</keyword>, of which he is the chief patron, is seeking a straight third term in office with Badal being at the helm of affairs. 
 As he turns 89 on December 8, Badal certainly does not fit Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s idea that “politicians should retire at the age of 75”. “Badal saab”, as he is referred to by most people around him, starts his day early and actively goes through his daily routine of meetings with officers, ministers, delegations and others who come to meet him. 
 
Badal’s “Sangat Darshan” (meeting with the people) programme takes him to several villages and towns across Punjab every week. The programme is basically to take the government to the people’s doorsteps and hundreds throng every venue where he stops and listens to problems and suggestions the people want to share with him. 
 
Those close to him say “Badal saab” is always active and alert despite his age. He has been in public life for nearly 70 years now. 
 
“He is quite alert and his memory is far better than most of the much younger people who are around him. He has a mass appeal which no one can match,” an aide told IANS. 
 
Hailing from a simple agricultural background, Badal forayed into politics by getting elected as a sarpanch (village headman) in 1947, the year the country won its Independence. He was first elected to the Punjab assembly in 1957 on a Congress party ticket. After leaving the Congress soon after, Badal ended up opposing the Congress policies and governments — a thing he continues to do even now. 
 Well-known for his witty one-liners and memory of people and events, Badal, who was conferred the <keyword id="15575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-Vibhushan">Padma Vibhushan</keyword> — the country’s second-highest civilian honour — in 2015 by the Modi government, has always remained centre-stage in Punjab’s politics. 
 
Born December 8, 1927, at Abul Khurana village near Malout in southwest Punjab, he has been Chief Minister five times — 1970-71, 1977-1980, 1997-2002, 2007-2012 and 2012 onwards. He has been in power in Punjab continuously since March 2007. He was briefly a Union minister in 1977 in the Morarji Desai government. 
 
Badal’s wife, Surinder Kaur, died in 2011 of cancer. The couple had two children — son Sukhbir and daughter Preneet. 
 Badal’s close family members are all in the government. Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Akali Dal President and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, now dominates both party and government affairs. Hyderabad, Jan 15 (IANS) The stage is set for Covid-19 vaccination rollout in Telangana where 4,000 healthcare workers in government-run facilities will receive the first dose on Saturday. Health authorities have made all arrangements to vaccinate the beneficiaries at 139 centres spread across all 33 districts in the state. Health minister Eatala Rajender and director of medical education Ramesh Reddy will receive the vaccine at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan will participate in vaccine rollout programme at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). Ministers, members of Parliament, members of state legislative assembly and council and public representatives down to the level of village sarpanchs will participate in the programme in district and area hospitals and in primary health centres in rural and urban areas. Director of public health G. Srinivas Rao said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the programme in virtual mode at 10.30 a.m. Arrangements have been made for two-way communication at two vaccinations centres at Gandhi Hospital and a rural health centre at Narsingi. A maximum of 30 beneficiaries will be vaccinated at each centre. The numbers will be ramped up in phases from Monday and in coming days this will reach the maximum level of 100 per centre. Majority of beneficiaries during the first few days of the vaccination drive will comprise staff from sanitation and security wings of teaching, hospitals, district hospitals and area hospitals and ASHA, Anganwadi and other workers at primary health centres . The state health authorities have identified 3.15 lakh healthcare workers in government and private institutions and registered them in Cowin application, especially developed for Covid vaccination. The number of centres for vaccination will also be increased gradually from Monday and in next few days the programme will be conducted at all 1,213 centres depending on the availability of the vaccine doses. Srinivas Rao said Covid vaccine will be given between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday while routine vaccination programme for children and women will continue every Wednesday and Saturday. There will be no vaccination on Sundays and public holidays. The state has so far received 3.74 lakh doses from union ministry of health and family welfare and they were stored in 2-8-degree temperature. The authorities have already transported over 50, 000 doses to the districts. The authorities reassured beneficiaries that both Covishield and Covaxin approved for emergency use by Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) were safe and that there is no need for any apprehensions. When his attention was drawn to reports that some doctors were not ready to take Covaxin as its third phase trials were not completed, director of public health said there should be no discrimination between vaccines. He said as per Government of India guidelines consent will be taken from those who will be receiving Covaxin shot. Their health status will be examined and scrutinised before giving the vaccine and after vaccination they will be monitored for seven days for any adverse events. Similar process will be followed after the second dose which will be given after four weeks. "We should be proud that Covaxin has been developed indigenously and that too on the soil of Telangana. Nobody should have any worried. If necessary, I will take Covaxin in coming days," he said. The officials said they were strictly following the protocols prescribed by the union ministry and the directions of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to deal with any case of reaction following Covid vaccination. An observation room has been set up at each centre where every beneficiary will be monitored for 30 minutes after vaccination. The department has arranged vehicles to shift anybody who may develop some reaction after taking the vaccine. Intensive care units with 5-10 beds have been set up at 57 hospitals across the state to tackle such cases. This arrangement will be in place for entire period of vaccination which may last eight to nine months. "We vaccinate lakhs of people every year under routine immunisation programme. Reactions like pain and developing fever are not uncommon after taking vaccines. One in lakhs may have adverse reaction after vaccination and we are fully geared up to deal with this," said Ramesh Reddy. He hopes that Covid vaccination will weaken intensity of the disease as happened in the case of Swine Flu. "After taking vaccination antibodies will be developed to face the infection. T cells get activated and antibodies kill that particular virus. If this happens we will break the cycle and if we break cycle, the disease will die natural death. 4,000 healthcare workers to get Covid vaccine on first day in Telangana

Kathua/Doda/Jammu, Apr 11 () Setting an example, about 2,500 residents of a panchayat in Kathua district Saturday decided to skip their one meal everyday to feed the hungry as the coronavirus lockdown has snatched livelihoods of many and left them without food, despite best government efforts. Sarpanch Shiv Dev Singh of Panchayat Baira-Buorthian said a resolution to this effect was passed by the Panchayat, which has a population of over 2,500, at a special meeting "The 2500 residents implemented it immediately," he told , raising the slogan "save food - save the nation". "It is a token contribution from our panchayat in the country's fight against coronavirus." Jammu and Kashmir was put under complete lockdown on March 22, two days ahead of the 21-day nationwide shutdown announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. A total of 207 people - 168 in Kashmir and 39 in Jammu - have tested positive in the Union Territory, out of whom four have died, three in the Valley and one in Jammu. After the lockdown was announced, migrant labourers working in J&amp;K got stranded with no work. Also, local daily wage-earners lost their livelihoods as all commercial activities and labour work came to a halt. Although the government has taken various steps to reach out to the affected people, complaints about underprivileged sections running out of ration and money have been coming from different parts of Jammu region. Police and other security agencies including Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have also come forward joining hands with NGOs, social and political outfits and even individuals to ensure "no one sleeps hungry". Reports from Doda said the tribal population in the remote areas of Chenab valley district are facing a very adverse situation. Sarpanch Shiv Dev Singh urged other panchayats to follow suit to ensure such people get help. He said his panchayat will identify the needy people and would reach out to them to ensure that they survive this lockdown with "honour and dignity". Social activist Sukesh Khajuria, a resident of Jammu, welcomed people showering flower petals on those on the forefront of the battle against coronavirus but said "we need much more than tokenism". "The stark reality is that many people are running short of food and money due to the ongoing lockdown and we need to strengthen the efforts of the government to reach out to such people," he said. Reports from Doda said the tribal population living in the remote hilly slopes of the Chenab valley district are facing a very adverse situation. The Gujjar tribe traditionally resides in small hamlets near high-altitude meadows far away from the populated areas and treks downhill to the villages and towns with their produce (milk) and labour work to earn their daily income. "I have not earned a penny for the last 15 days, as the work has come to a standstill. We are without money and left with no essentials as a result of which my four children and elderly parents are starving for the past two days," said Mohammad Salim Gujjar of Alan-Sharekhi village, hoping some government help would come sooon. Hundreds of Gujjar families reside on the slopes in small hamlets like Alan-Sharekhi, Dooru-Sartingal, Kota Top, Darie, Ladoo, Rajpura, Kilroo and Ghil-kanaan near high altitude meadows Padri, Qatari, Kainthi, Gildhar, Sarola, Kilroodhar, Guldanda and Bhal-Padri of the hilly district. The families of many local labourers who are stranded in neighbouring states including Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are also looking towards the government for assistance to overcome the crisis. "I have been borrowing money to survive as my husband has got stranded at Shimla due to lockdown. We want the government to at least help us get back our bread-earners ," said Gulshana, the wife of stranded labourer Abdul Gani Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhadarwah, Rakesh Kumar, when contacted, assured necessary help would be made available to the tribal population. "We have got enough stock of foodgrains with us. We will immediately send a team to these hamlets and ensure delivery of ration to them at the earliest," he said. Reports from Samba district said over 150 families of village Dunai in Sumb block are without food as the local residents have no money left with them. "We heard the government is providing three months free ration to the poor but no one had come to us so far. We were working in the unorganised sector and earned our wages daily. We have no money to feed our families," said Babu Ram, a local resident, fearing starvation in case the help does not reach them. The district administration in Jammu distributed free ration among over 400 stranded labourers who are living in a slum near Jammu railway station. The workers, most of whom earn a living by handling goods at the railway station, had complained of starvation due to the lockdown. The government distributed ration kits containing five kg Atta, mustard oil and other items among the workers on Friday, officials said. Police had also come to the rescue of over 40 families consisting of 160 people in Akhnoor sector in the outskirts of Jammu as part of its "we care for you" campaign. Police acted after receiving a call from the stranded labourers from Bihar and Haryana that they are running out of ration, an official said, adding ration kits were distributed among the labourers with voluntary contribution from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
