<p>The company launched in 2012 and just reeled in Sun cofounder Scott McNealy as an investor. He <a href="http://www.skytree.net/pr/skytree-secures-18-million-in-funding-to-fuel-explosive-growth-in-the-big-data-analytics-market/">participated in an $18 million</a> investment announced yesterday, along with logistics company UPS and U.S. Venture Partners. (Skytree has raised $20 million to date.)</p>
<p>It's tech advisory board reads like a who's who in machine learning, too: UC Berkeley professor Michael Jordan world famous in the field; Dave Patterson who invented the RISC processor and RAID storage technology; Pat Hanrahan, cofounder of Tableau Software and a Stanford professor who previously worked for Pixar, where he won two Oscars for creating Pixar's famous animation tech.</p>
<p>They all signed on in part because cofounder Alex Gray, a scientist at Georgia Tech, won an award for his work "proving that dark matter exists in the universe," cofounder and CEO Martin Hack told Businss Insider.</p>
<p>But they're also involved because Skytree is doing something amazing: a new form of big data analysis known as "machine learning." It uses algorithms to sift through massive volumes of data to find the answers to questions you didn't even know you had,</p>
<p>It can find patterns. It can find relationships. It can find anomolies or outliers. With that info, it can predict the future, Hack says.</p>
<p>It's so good at this kind of work that the folks at SETI Institute are using it "for finding signs of extraterrestrial intelligence," Hack said. SETI is the group looking for intelligent life in the cosmos.</p>
<p>Skytree "increases their chances dramatically" because there is so much data pouring in so fast, from SETI's fields of big arrays in Northern Califorina, that in the past, they had to discard a lot of it. Now, Skytree servers sift through it as fast as it comes in. If an alien speaks, we'll hear it.</p>
<p>With that kind of pedigree its not surprising that Skytree is already seeing success with other enterprises. It has about 15 customers, including eHarmony and the U.S. Golf Association. It's also working with Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research to help measure things like the distance between galaxies.</p>

This Guy's Data Startup Is Helping Scientists Find Space Aliens 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A space elevator could make it much cheaper and faster to get goods to other planets, like Mars.</li><li>The Obayashi Corporation based in Japan announced in 2012 plans to begin building one by next year.</li></ul><p>Imagine a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diamond-nanothreads-make-space-elevator-2014-10">long tether</a> linking Earth to space that could launch us to orbit at a fraction of the cost and slingshot us to other worlds at record speed.</p><p>That's the basic idea behind a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thoth-12-mile-space-tower-elevator-astronauts-travel-major-flaws-2015-8">space elevator</a>. </p><p>Instead of taking six to eight months to reach Mars, scientists have estimated a space elevator could get us there in <a target="_blank" href="https://arc.aiaa.org/doi/10.2514/6.2024-2714">three to four months</a> or even as quickly as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0094576520306275">40 days</a>.</p><p>The concept of space elevators isn't new, but engineering such a structure would be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/space-elevator-on-earth-moon-2019-9">no easy feat</a>, and many other issues besides technology stand in the way.</p><p>That's why the ambition to seriously build one is fairly recent.</p><p>The Japan-based company Obayashi Corporation thinks it has the expertise.</p><h2 id="172cf8db-a1ea-4e1a-9bef-3740ea9e942a">Japan aims to build a space elevator by 2050</h2><div type="image" title="A view of Tokyo Skytree Tower among other buildings" height="1500" width="2216" msid="110745965" hostid="261" sizebytes="238662"></div><p>Known for constructing the world's tallest tower, the Tokyo <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-japan-skytree-opens-to-the-public-2012-5">Skytree</a>, Obayashi Corporation announced in 2012 that it would reach even loftier heights with its own space elevator.</p><p>In a report that same year, the company said it would begin construction on the $100-billion project by 2025 and could start operations as early as 2050.</p><p>We checked in with Yoji Ishikawa, who wrote the report and is part of the company's future technology creation department, to see how the project is progressing ahead of 2025.</p><p>While Ishikawa said the company likely won't start construction next year, it is currently "engaged in research and development, rough design, partnership building, and promotion," he told Business Insider.</p><p>Some have doubted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-up-the-ante-space-race-sky-ladder-to-mars-2021-6">such a structure</a> is even possible.</p><p>"It's been sort of a kooky idea," said Christian Johnson, who published a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencepolicyjournal.org/uploads/5/4/3/4/5434385/johnson_jspg_v22.pdf">report</a> on space elevators last year in the peer-reviewed Journal of Science Policy &amp; Governance.</p><p>"That said, there are some people who are real scientists who are really on board with this and really want to make it happen," Johnson said.</p><h2 id="2118aa46-187e-4e1d-808b-32a243783761">A cheaper route to space</h2><div type="image" title="Artwork of a space elevator concept with a futuristic vehicle rising above earth" height="1500" width="2394" msid="110745967" hostid="261" sizebytes="148158"></div><p>Launching humans and objects into space on rockets is extremely expensive. For example, NASA has estimated its four <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-artemis-orion-spaceship-enters-moon-orbit-progress-toward-astronauts-2022-11">Artemis moon missions</a> will cost $4.1 billion <em>per launch</em>.</p><p>The reason is something called the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-big-falcon-spaceship-construction-musk-mars-missions-2018-9">rocket equation</a>. It takes a lot of fuel to get to space, but the fuel is heavy, which increases the amount of fuel you need. "And so you see the kind of vicious cycle there," Johnson said.</p><p>With a space elevator, you don't need rockets or fuel.</p><p>According to some designs, space elevators would shuttle cargo to orbit on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/researchers-take-tiny-first-step-toward-space-elevator-180970212/">electromagnetic vehicles</a> called climbers. These climbers could be remotely powered — like<strong> </strong>through <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aptera-electric-vehicle-launch-edition-solar-panel-car-2023-1">solar power</a> or microwaves — eliminating the need for on-board fuel.</p><p>In his report for the Obayashi Corporation, Ishikawa wrote that this type of space elevator could help drop the cost of moving goods to space to $57 per pound. Other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150211-space-elevators-a-lift-too-far">estimates</a> for space elevators in general have<strong> </strong>put the price at $227 per pound.</p><p>Even SpaceX's Falcon 9, which, at around $1,227 per pound, is one of the cheaper rockets to launch, is still about five times as expensive as the higher cost estimates for space elevators.</p><p>There are other benefits besides cost, too.</p><p>There's no danger of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-launch-rocket-blows-up-explosion-elon-musk-mars-2023-11">rocket exploding</a>, and the climbers could be zero-emission vehicles, Johnson said. At a relatively leisurely pace of 124 miles per hour, the Obayashi Corporation's climbers would travel slower than rockets with fewer vibrations, which is good for sensitive equipment.</p><p>Ishikawa said the Obayashi Corporation sees a space elevator as a new kind of public works project that would benefit all of humankind.</p><h2 id="9b867284-638a-4663-81f7-dd5d2daf3eba">There's not enough steel on Earth to make a space elevator</h2><div type="image" title="A concept drawing of a space elevator" height="1469" width="2040" msid="110745968" hostid="261" sizebytes="199258"></div><p>Right now, one of the biggest obstacles to building a space elevator is what to make the tether or tube from.</p><p>To withstand the tremendous tension it would be under, the tube would have to be very thick if it were made out of typical materials, like steel. However,<strong> </strong>"if you try to build it out of steel, you would need more steel than exists on Earth," Johnson said.</p><p>Ishikawa's report suggested Obayashi Corporation might use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-carbon-nanotubes-chip-technology-2012-10">carbon nanotubes</a>. A nanotube is a rolled-up layer of graphite, the material that's used in pencils.</p><p>It's much lighter and is less likely to break under tension compared to steel, so the space elevator could be much smaller, Johnson said. But there's a catch.</p><p>While nanotubes are very strong, they're also tiny, a billionth of a meter in diameter. And<strong> </strong>researchers haven't made them very lengthy. The longest is only <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=a761485efff327148ca8f12f1a61d72926876eb9f1ff79e01bd3bae87b010bd1&amp;postID=6650e5c01b5ec2934a993757&amp;postSlug=space-elevator-pros-cons-japan-design-revolutionize-space-travel-2024-5&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41467-019-12519-5">about</a> 2 feet.</p><p>To be properly balanced while still reaching geosynchronous orbit — where objects stay in sync with Earth's rotation — the tether would need to be at least 22,000 miles long, per Ishikawa's report.</p><p>"So we're not there," Johnson said of the nanotube length. "But that doesn't mean it's impossible."</p><p>Instead, researchers might need to develop an entirely new material, Ishikawa said.</p><h2 id="bdebce69-42a2-49c3-8c7b-61da7b90225b">Other obstacles</h2><div type="image" title="A circular object floats in a body of water offshore" height="1500" width="2124" msid="110745969" hostid="261" sizebytes="108774"></div><p>Whatever the material turns out to be, there are still other problems.</p><p>For instance, a space elevator's tether would be under such incredible tension that it would be prone to snapping, Johnson said. A lightning strike could vaporize it. There's also other weather to consider like tornadoes, monsoons, and hurricanes.</p><p>Locating the tether base at the equator would lessen the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-hurricanes-never-hit-europe-2018-10">likelihood of hurricanes</a>, but it would still need to be in the open ocean to make it more difficult for terrorists to target, Johnson<strong> </strong>said.</p><p>It would also take a lot of trips to make up for that giant price tag for construction.</p><p>That's only scratching the surface of the challenges. And they can't all be solved by one company, Ishikawa said. "We need partnerships," he said. "We need different industries."</p><p>"Of course," Ishikawa said, "raising funds is very essential."</p><p>That's a lot of obstacles to overcome to start construction in time for operation by 2050, especially since Ishikawa estimated it would take 25 years to build. He noted that the 2050 estimate always came with caveats about the technology progressing. "It's not our goal or promise," he said, but the company is still aiming for that date.</p><p>"I think that those time estimates are optimistic," Johnson said, "even assuming there was a breakthrough tomorrow."</p>

Space elevators could get us to Mars in record time — and Japan is planning one for 2050

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I love traveling, but I get tired easily, so I schedule naps during my trip.</li><li>Napping on vacation caused issues with friends and family, so now I travel solo.</li></ul><p>I've been a <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-to-know-before-solo-cruise-from-frequent-cruiser-2023-8">solo traveler</a> for most of my life, but these days, there's a weird reason I prefer to do it alone: I love to nap when I'm on vacation.</p><p>Yes, I'm a 36-year-old who needs a good snooze so much that I actually <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-private-room-at-airport-is-it-worth-it-photos-2022-7">schedule nap time</a> into my travel itineraries. </p><p>Sadly, my nap policy has caused a few conflicts on group trips but I'm not willing to compromise on it to satisfy my travel buddies, so I end up <a href="https://www.insider.com/solo-travel-not-worth-it-after-decade-2023-7">traveling alone</a>.</p><h2><strong>I schedule nap time on my trips because I need to recharge</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Katka Lapelosova holding a wine glass and standing on a bed set up in front of mountains in Switzerland" height="2730" width="4096" msid="102877269" hostid="261" sizebytes="568790"></div><p>That "vacation rush" many of us feel when we board a plane or walk around a new place for the first time can be overwhelming.</p><p>I experience that adrenaline rush quite often because, as a remote worker, I typically average one or two international trips per month. I'm privileged to see so much of the world, but being on the road quite often means I can feel a lot more tired once I reach my destination. </p><p>My exhaustion manifests in a number of ways. I get overstimulated easily, so even small things, like navigating the London Underground or spending an afternoon at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, can mentally and physically drain me.</p><p>I also live with severe anxiety and depression — and fatigue is a symptom of both. I do my best to manage these mental-health conditions but, I won't lie, I've spent <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-never-do-at-hotel-from-frequent-guest-2023-8">whole days in my hotel room</a> on some trips just trying to catch up on sleep. </p><p>So I plan for at least one <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-am-i-still-tired-after-taking-a-nap-2019-4">nap during the day</a> when I travel, and sometimes I'll designate an entire day to just rest as well. I don't always need all that time to sleep, but I'm grateful it's there in case I do.</p><h2><strong>Many think napping is a waste of time on vacation, so now I travel alone</strong></h2><p>On past trips, suggesting something as short as a 20-minute nap has felt like too big of an ask for my travel companions.</p><p>Most of them haven't understood my need for rest, replying with, "You're on vacation, why would you want to spend time sleeping?" They'd rather spend that time running around to every attraction in Barcelona or hiking all day in the Scottish highlands so they don't "waste" one minute of their trip. </p><p>I totally get it — most of my friends and family only get two weeks of vacation time a year so they want to savor every minute. They have a right to do so, and I don't want to hold people back from seeing as much of the world as possible. </p><p>But I hate feeling pressured to stay out all day simply because others get bored too easily or don't want to take a break. Shady parks are great and beach loungers are my best friend. I also don't mind splurging on a super <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-guests-should-stop-doing-at-hotels-former-employee">comfy hotel</a> if it means I'll feel more balanced after a good rest.</p><p>I'm flattered when people want to join me on my travels — but if you can't respect my need to nap, unfortunately, you aren't coming with me.   </p>

Observations show that it will be going at 44,417 kilometres per hour as it approaches the planet.<br /><br />Given its size and trajectory, it has been identified by the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (<a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/">CNEOS</a>) as ‘potentially hazardous’.<br /><br /><strong>How do they know it’s coming?<br /></strong><br />The asteroid was first spotted on 6 February 2000 as per the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (<a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=310442">JPL</a>) records. Observations show that the asteroid goes around the Sun passing between the orbits of Mercury and Venus when its closest to the star.<br /><br /><strong>Is the asteroid going to hit the planet?<br /></strong><br />Despite its size and velocity, Asteroid 310442 is not going to crash into the planet. It will be a good 7.3 million kilometres from the Earth’s surface as it makes its approach.<br /><br />While that may seem like a good distance away, in astronomical terms, it’s actually quite close — a mere fraction of the 240.09 million kilometres between the Earth and Mars.<br /><br />According to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/neil-degrasse-tyson-and-other-scientists-believe-asteroids-will-eventually-hit-earth/articleshow/70644547.cms">astronomers</a>, it’s only a matter of time before an asteroid sets a direct course for the planet. Here's the latest in the arrest of Huawei's Meng "Sabrina" Wanzhou.</li><li>Meng, detained on December 1, while changing flights on her way to Mexico will have to wait until Tuesday to find out her immediate prospects of freedom.</li><li>The 46-year-old Meng, rumoured to be called <a href="https://china-underground.com/2018/12/06/princess-of-huawei-meng-wanzhou-daughter-of-the-founder-of-huawei-arrested-in-canada-risks-extradition-to-the-united-states/">"the Princess'"</a> inside Huawei, has been accused of covering up Huawei's violation of US sanctions against Iran for as many as five years.</li><li>Since the news of her arrest, global stock markets have fallen, China's state-curated social media has erupted in indignation, and Chinese and US officials have scrambled to understand what it all means for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/us-china-trade-war-huawei-cfo-arrest-sabrina-wanzhou-trump-tariffs-2018-12">a trade truce</a> that looks more and more unlikely.</li><li>Huawei has appointed the company's <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/usa-china-huawei-cfo/chinas-huawei-appoints-chairman-as-acting-cfo-after-executives-arrest-idINKBN1O60G4">Chairman Liang Hua</a> as acting CFO, to replace Meng.</li></ul><p>While a Canadian Supreme Court heard bail arguments for second day, China is maintaining its official outrage at <span>the arrest of Meng "Sabrina" Wanzhou, the daughter of Chinese telecom Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei.</span></p><p>At the second day of a bail hearing at British Columbia's Supreme Court, Meng's lawyers tried hard to secure Meng's release, even arguing her flight was unlikely because it would cause China to lose national face.</p><p>"Given her unique profile as the face of a Chinese corporate national champion, if she were to flee or breach your order in any way in these very unique circumstances, my lord, it does not overstate to say she would embarrass China itself," Meng's attorney David Martin told the court, according to the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/2177339/bail-hearings-continue-canada-huawei-cfo-sabrina">South China Morning Post.</a></p><p>The <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">defense</keyword> called two security company executives to testify about how they would monitor Meng upon her release, but in cross examination, the Crown - the prosecution under the British legal system - asked one of the executives if his company had ever actually monitored someone on bail before. </p><p><span>"No," was the answer, according to <a href="https://www.thestar.com/vancouver/2018/12/10/live-coverage-as-bail-hearing-resumes-for-huawei-cfo-arrested-on-fraud-allegations.html">The Vancouver Star</a>.</span></p><p>Not encouraging for Meng, especially when her own lawyers cannot testify to her husband's immigration status in Canada. That's important because <span>Justice William Ehrcke's wondered aloud on Tuesday just how Meng's husband, </span>Liu Xiaozong, could possibly take responsibility for Meng as her surety, effectively her home jailer, when no one knows where he officially belongs.</p><p>The lawyers tried to assure the court that Meng would fork out the costs for her security guards, accept electronic  and physical monitoring, offer up her two Vancouver mansions in the name of her husband and add on a cash payment, making her bail at roughly $14 million in value, by the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/2177339/bail-hearings-continue-canada-huawei-cfo-sabrina">South China Morning Post's</a> calculations.</p><p>The big problem for Meng is that the two North American neighbors have a track record of a long extradition processes. Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, faces US fraud charges related to alleged sanctions-breaking dealings with Iran, and has been awaiting a Canadian court's bail decision.</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>While reports Tuesday suggest that China's media have been <a href="https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2018/12/minitrue-do-not-report-on-arrest-of-huawei-cfo/">officially told to steer clear</a> of reporting on the case, the Communist Party mouthpiece <a href="http://en.people.cn/n3/2018/1210/c90000-9526941.html">The People's Daily</a> pulled out its preferred emergency op-ed pen name "Zhong Shen" (钟声) literally "Voice of China," which is only dusted off for special commentary on issues that require central coordination. </p><p><span>"The use of all kinds of dirty tricks to suppress Huawei has exposed some truly dark intentions toward China and its leading technology firms, but those who harbor such intentions are destined to shoot themselves in the foot," the Voice of China warned.</span></p><p>Canada's Ambassador to China John McCallum and the US Ambassador Terry Bransta were "urgently summoned" on Sunday for a dressing down from <a href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/">China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.</a></p><p>According to a statement by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng, <a href="http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1131094.shtml">reported by China's Global Times,</a> <span>China told the ambassadors both countries must take immediate measures to correct the</span> "extremely odious," decision and reverse the arrest order.</p><p><span>Le also warned that Canada specifically will</span> "face grave consequences" and be held accountable if Meng is not immediately released.</p><p><span></span><span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-meng-wanzhou-trump-china-trade-war-2018-12">Also known as Sabrina,</a> Meng is the daughter of the Chinese tech giant's president and founder Ren Zhengfei. She also serves as his company's CFO. </p><p>She was unexpectedly arrested by Canadian authorities on Saturday, December 1, while boarding an outbound flight in Vancouver shortly after China's president Xi Jinping was meeting with US president Donald Trump to discuss a trade war ceasefire.</p><p>Meng's sudden and surprising detention has left left many <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/huawei-executives-arrest-stirs-fears-about-corporate-travel-1544270402">Sino-US experts gobsmacked</a>. It has sparked a global <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/stock-market-equities-slump-as-sp-set-for-worst-december-since-2002-2018-12">stock market aneurysm</a>, an <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/12/anger-china-arrest-huawei-meng-wanzhou-canada-181207091704518.html">eruption of indignation</a> on state-curated Chinese social media, and left Chinese and US officials scrambling to understand what it all means for a trade truce.</p><div data-v-99ed41dc=""><h2>So what is she accused of?</h2><p data-v-75a2571d="" data-v-99ed41dc=""><strong><div authorities allege</a> that Meng, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/insane-life-huawei-founder-ren-zhengfei-ultra-wealthy-family-2018-12">also known as Cathy</a>, tried to cover up her and Huawei's involvement in an effort to sell equipment to Iran in defiance of US sanctions against that country.</p><p data-v-75a2571d="" data-v-99ed41dc="">A full picture of the charges against Meng has not yet emerged, although <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46490053">according to the BBC</a>, Meng allegedly circumvented US sanctions against Iran for five years, between 2009 and 2014 via a Huawei subsidiary called Skycom and allegedly defrauded US banks by lying about the connection.</p><p>The court has heard that Meng publicly misrepresented Skycom as separate from Huawei in her dealings with Iran.</p><p>That's a no-no when it comes to both dealing with Iran and dealing with the bank that lends you money for it.</p><p>The BBC cited a Canadian government lawyer telling the court that Meng was accused of "conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions." </p><p>Meng faces up to 30 years in prison in the US per violation if found guilty of the charges, the BBC said the court was told.</p><h2>Pick a passport</h2><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c0de253d5000c41ef3d48b3-1000/shutterstock134866979.jpg" border="0" alt="passports money" data-mce-source="Shutterstock/elbud" /><p href="https://beta.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/2177153/china-summons-us-envoy-protest-extremely-nasty">The South China Morning Post cited</a> a letter from the US Department of Justice, which suggested that in the past 11 years, Meng has been issued "no fewer than seven different passports" from both China and Hong Kong. </p></div><p>Wall Street has spluttered since the news, the S&amp;P 500 is heading towards its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/stock-market-equities-slump-as-sp-set-for-worst-december-since-2002-2018-12">worst December since 2002</a>, European shares even nudged a two-year low, and indexes across Asia doubled-over in anxiety, where they are likely to remain until certainty can be re-established. </p><p><a href="https://www.caixinglobal.com/2018-12-07/huawei-suppliers-stocks-hit-hard-after-arrest-of-key-executive-101356448.html">And meanwhile Caixin has reported</a> that <a href="https://www.neophotonics.com/">NeoPhotonics Corp.</a> a US manufacturer of semiconductor products, fell off a cliff following Meng's arrest, shedding 16%.</p><p>According to Bloomberg, almost half of NeoPhotonics entire revenue comes out of Huawei.</p><h2>Japan could be next </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img href="https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/australia-no-longer-isolated-as-five-eyes-turn-on-huawei-20181206-p50kk1.html">have come down hard on the Chinese telecom business</a>, blocking its access to national 5G infrastructure networks and in some cases banning it from essential infrastructure.</p><p><span>Ciuting security concerns on Monday, Japan's triumvirate of major mobile carriers, </span>NTT Docomo, SoftBank and KDDI, have all made the decision to shun Chinese-originated tech and equipment from their 5G networks, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/japan-effectively-bans-chinas-huawei-zte-from-government-contracts-joining-us/2018/12/10/748fe98a-fc69-11e8-ba87-8c7facdf6739_story.html?utm_term=.b84f045a5b67">The Washington Post</a> reports.</p><p><span></span>That comes with an effective halt on ministries and armed forces connecting or transacting in any way with Chinese telecoms.
