The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup+">startup</a> culture is growing in India as high networth individuals (HNIs) have invested more than Rs 1,200 crore into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=venture+capital+">venture capital</a> funds focused on helping early-stage entrepreneurs. 
 These <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> have flowed in over the past year into these venture <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=capital+funds+">capital funds</a> - <keyword id="2491409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Orios-Venture-Partners">Orios Venture Partners</keyword>, Zodius Capital, Your-Nest Angel, Kalaari Capital and Blume Ventures - which have together raised Rs 4,360 crore, data shared by these funds with the Economic Times reveal. 
 
These funds have the mandate to invest in app-makers, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=radio+taxi+">radio taxi</a> companies, food-ordering platforms and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=healthcare+">healthcare</a> aggregators and such Internet businesses and other <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>. In some funds, over 50% of the corpus raised has come in from high networth individuals. 
 The trend to invest in startups started with top executives and businessmen. "People who are exposed to various asset classes have now begun seeing value in venture funds," says <keyword id="1768757" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunil-Goyal">Sunil Goyal</keyword>, CEO of YourNest Angel Fund. 
 
He said: “Even traditionally wealthy investors are warming up to the idea of investing in startup funds." 
 
These numbers are in line with an ET CXO poll on startup investing published on Monday. Over 60% of the 100-plus CXOs polled by ET said they had already invested a portion of their wealth in startups. Another 25% expressed interest in such investments in the future. 
 
· Low awareness level "The HNI response to startup funds has been pretty good, but awareness level is still low," says Rehan Yar Khan, founder-partner at Orios Venture Partners. These funds, Khan says, are not yet as popular as <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> or equity funds. 
Orios Venture mobilised close to Rs 150 crore from HNIs in its earlier fund, which closed in August 2014. It is now raising Rs 1,200-crore fund and expects to get Rs 300 crore from rich Indian investors. 
Zodius Capital recently raised over 45% of its Rs 700-crore fund from rich domestic investors. 
 
· Ticket sizes have grown 
Individual ticket sizes have also grown over the past few months with average investment ticket sizes of Rs 10-20 crore. Wealth managers seek larger investments as these funds have a high failure rate. A portfolio of 20 companies may only have 3-4 multi-baggers (yielding returns of over 50 times), the rest being average performers and many turning plain duds. 
 
Wealth managers say funds will have to generate gross returns in excess of 20 per cent to make a meaningful case. "We'll have to wait and see how the first batch of funds delivers in terms of returns. Vintage funds in this segment will set the tone for future investments in startups," said Karthik Reddy, managing partner at Blume Ventures.

However, she also knows that it takes a certain scale for a startup to reach that level and its also needs access to capital. And that’s where consolidation comes in. “Consolidation is a real part of that and it didn’t exist a decade ago. I always advise entrepreneurs that as much as I would love to see you take your company to IPO, you have to see whether you are better off building this company individually or after you have reached a certain scale whether you will get better value out of being part of a larger platform. It was that thinking which is why we were also open to selling Myntra when it was thriving,” she said. Kola also had another important message for entrepreneurs – selling is not a sellout. “It doesn't have to be that way. Selling is a continuity of the journey. Today, I see more openness from CEOs of these large companies to consolidate and promote <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> and also investors and founders being open to dialogue and discussion,” she said. Urban Ladder – a sour deal? Ambani’s Reliance Retail acquired Urban Ladder for ₹182 crore taking up a 96% share in the startup. In what is being termed as a distress sale, Urban Ladder had raised over ₹700 crore from marquee investors Sequoia India, Steadview Capital, ELEVATION Capital (earlier called SAIF Partners), and Kalaari Capital. And according to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/reliance-retail-acquires-home-products-online-retailer-urban-ladder/articleshow/79229914.cms?from=mdr">reports</a>, the investors have got back just one-fifth of the investment. Kola had earlier stepped down from Urban Ladder’s board in 2019. In 2018, Urban Ladder underwent an organizational restructuring earlier this year, and had to let go off 90 employees. The COVID-19 crisis has triggered consolidation in the startup sector, with a lot of companies being acquired in the recent past as they struggle to survive the pandemic. Experts in the startup sector predict that there are many more consolidations and acquisitions on the anvil, as sectors see increased competition. New Delhi, Dec 1 () Zivame will set up 60 offline stores in metros and tier I cities over the next 12-18 months, as the online intimate wear retailer looks to further strengthen its omnichannel play in the growing segment.
Actoserba (which runs Zivame), which has narrowed its losses from over Rs 32 crore in FY18 to Rs 19.56 crore in FY19, is also looking at achieving break-even in the next 12 months.
"Last one year has been phenomenal as we have strengthened our position across categories and deepened our presence in the markets. With tech, data and innovation at the heart of everything we do, we are set up for exponential growth over the next few years," Zivame CEO Amisha Jain told .
She added that the company is poised to hit over 75 per cent growth for the next few years.
"We have more than 40 retail stores in tier I markets and we are looking at taking that number to 100 over the next 12-18 months. We will deepen our presence in these markets," she said.
The company's revenue from operations grew to Rs 137.9 crore in FY19 from Rs 86.6 crore in the previous year. Its marketing expenses decreased by 18 per cent in FY19 vis-a-vis FY18, while the total expenses increased by 1 per cent.
"Currently, Zivame brand has hit Rs 340 crore annual runrate for FY20. While our offline business is growing at a very strong pace, our online business also continues to do extremely well. The app contribution for Zivame brand gross sales has increased from 50 per cent in FY18 to 65 per cent in FY19... we should be able to break-even in the next 12 months," Jain said.
The online channel accounts for about 80 per cent of Zivame's business, while the remaining comes from offline retail.
Jain said the company is focussing on four areas to drive growth -- continuous product innovation, great consumer experience, omni-channel presence and its new brand identity.
"This year, we unveiled a new brand identity with the tagline 'Love Yourself Inside Out'. This aligns with our vision of creating an exciting, modern and inclusive environment for women to discover and shop for their intimate wear needs. Be it through products or content, we want to create dialogue and engagement around the category," she said.
Talking about the market opportunity, Jain said the intimate wear market in India is about USD 3 billion, of which only 40 per cent is organised. "This market is expected to grow to USD 6 billion in the next five years, and the share of organised retail is poised to grow to 60 per cent," she added.
Zivame, which counts Zodius Capital, Unilazer Ventures and Khazanah Nasional Bhd among its investors, is also looking at raising funds to the tune of USD 50 million (about Rs 350 crore) within this fiscal.
This year, Zivame has raised Rs 60 crore in funding as part of a bridge round, led by Zodius Technology Fund and a group of high net worth individuals, and Rs 10 crore in an extended series C Round from Allana Investment and Trading Company.
In 2015, it had raised Rs 250 crore in series C funding round from Zodius Technology Fund and Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the investment holding arm of the government of Malaysia and USD 6 million from Unilazer Ventures in 2013. Ratan Tata has also invested an undisclosed amount in the company. SR BAL

Zivame to expand offline footprint, eyes break-even in 12 months

But according to ET, Reliance could end up paying $160 million to buy Zivame. Zivame’s other investors include Zodius Capital and Malaysian sovereign fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Zivame was looking to expand its retail footprint in the country and was looking for funds. Zivame’s 30 physical retail stores and existing online commerce will be an add-on to Reliance’s apparel offering. Meanwhile, the acquisition from Reliance comes at a time when the conglomerate is doubling down on its retail offering, with one eye on Future Retail. The fashion and lifestyle category contributes just about 8% to Reliance Retail’s total revenue but has a margin of 24%. During the company’s Annual General Meeting, <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, chairperson of Reliance Industries had stressed on the importance of startups in Reliance’s ‘golden decade’ of growth. “I believe that there is no better partner for Indian start-ups than JIO. Reliance is building up it’s retail empire – ahead of Future deal, Reliance Brands adds Zivame in its cart

Ever since he became interested in start ups, many freshers in the entrepreneur business have been blessed by his magic wand. After PayTm, Ola and a several others, everyone in the circuit were keen on knowing where <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ratan+tata">Ratan Tata</a> is further investing. Well, its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lingerie">online lingerie retailer</a> Zivame now. While no information has been revealed about when and how much did the Tata Sons chairman emeritus invested in Zivame, people aware of the development confirmed about the development. 
 
However neither Tata nor Zivame have confirmed anything officially. 
 
Zivame recently closed a Series-C funding round of Rs 250 crore from Zodius Technology <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=funding">Fund</a> and Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the strategic investment fund of the government of Malaysia. Sources have informed that Tata has invested in the company much before the above findings. 
 
After stepping down an active role in the Tata Group, Ratan Tata has become a superstar investor for many start ups. He has invested in several internet companies and startups including Ola, Cardekho, Paytm, healthcare platform Lybrate and women's clothing brand Kaaryah. Tata also serves as an adviser with Kalaari Capital and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IDG+Ventures">IDG Ventures</a>, which have both invested in Zivame. 
 
He has invested in nearly a dozen of Kalaari's portfolio companies including Snapdeal, UrbanLadder, Holachef, YourStory and Bluestone. Zivame was expecting to close fiscal 2015 with Rs 50 crore in gross merchandise value, or the total retail price of the goods sold on its platform, on a loss of about Rs 35 crore.

Reliance has made a quiet entry into this market that stands integrated with e-Commerce, which stands at $100 billion in the next half a decade or so. Right now, ecommerce stands at $15 billion with a huge growth potential that is expected to surge every month. 
 Reliance’s retail subsidiary <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> launched in 2006 with its first Reliance Fresh store. Today the chain has 700 stores in over 63 cities in the country. The fate of these stores hangs in balance while Reliance brings about this change in business plan, which could also be applauded for being ‘forward looking’. 
 Several online retailers are planning to take a jump too including Kishore Biyani’s Future Retail and Kumar Mangalam Birla’s <keyword id="6359480" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla">Aditya Birla</keyword> Retail. 
 
Customer behaviour in big cities is quite typical considering the cost of buying grocery in person. Given the fact that traffic congestion is high in big cities, which also have high income group living in posh localities, e-Commerce can harness the power of ever expanding middle class in the country. 
 
Having sensed the potential, Bigbasket.com has already been funded by up to $32.6 million dollars with the help of Helion Ventures and Zodius Capital. LocalBanya is also looking at raising some handsome amount to carve a niche for itself in the e-Commerce sector. 
 
E-grocers will have it pretty easy owing to the fact that their overheads are probably lesser than running a complete set up. Economical options like having a warehouse with lesser rent and better facilities outside the town, with good supply network would do a world of good to this sector. 
 
The e-Commerce market in grocery sale will probably bring India some of the biggest lessons in the segment, with some valuable management know-hows because soon, small and big business houses will transition into online sales leaving aside their brick-and-mortar models. Challenges will be new and logistics will have to be realigned to meet the supply chain demands.
