Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 12 (ANI): The World Health Organisation has confirmed the human case of <keyword id="3653784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bird-flu-in-india" source="Orion">bird flu in India</keyword>, after the <keyword id="15897682" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="H9N2-virus" source="Orion">H9N2 virus</keyword> was detected in a four-year child in West Bengal. Overall, this is the second <keyword id="21166335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-infection" source="keywords">human infection</keyword> of <keyword id="2663051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avian-Influenza-A" source="Orion">avian influenza A</keyword> (H9N2) notified to WHO from India, with the first being done in 2019. The child has recovered and was discharged from the hospital. WHO received a notification from the International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) for India, regarding a human case of avian influenza A(H9N2) virus infection in West Bengal, the health body said in a press release. "The patient is a 4-year-old child residing in West Bengal state. The case, previously diagnosed with hyperreactive airway disease, initially presented to the paediatrician with fever and abdominal pain on 26 January 2024. He developed seizures on January 29 after which he was brought to the same paediatrician. The patient was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) of a local hospital due to the persistence of severe respiratory distress, recurrent high-grade fever and abdominal cramps. The patient tested positive for influenza B and adenovirus. He was discharged from the hospital on February 28 but with a recurrence of severe respiratory distress, he was referred to another government hospital and was admitted to the pediatric ICU and intubated on March 3. His nasopharyngeal swab was sent to the Kolkata Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and tested positive for influenza A (not sub-typed) and rhinovirus. On April 26, the sample was sub-typed as influenza A(H9N2) through a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The patient was discharged from the hospital with oxygen support on May 1. WHO said that the infected patient had exposure to poultry at home and in the surroundings. It, however, also affirmed there were no known persons reporting symptoms of respiratory illness in the family, the neighbourhood, or among healthcare workers at health facilities attended by the case at the time of reporting. The health body further warned that sporadic human cases could occur in the future as this virus is "one of the most prevalent avian influenza viruses circulating in poultry in different regions." Animal influenza viruses normally circulate in animals but can also infect humans. Infections in humans have primarily been acquired through direct contact with infected animals or through indirect contact with contaminated environments. Depending on the original host, influenza A viruses can be classified as avian influenza, swine influenza, or other types of animal influenza viruses, the WHO stated in the release. The health body further said that it is providing continued support to the government of India through technical advice, updates on risk assessment and updating contingency plans- both in the human and animal sectors in line with the global guidance.

Experts are warning the owner of a TikTok-famous emu against kissing and cuddling the bird after she said he had avian flu, calling it 'extremely dangerous'

The <keyword id="126959" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Trade-Organization">World Trade Organization</keyword> (<keyword id="6357761" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="wto">WTO</keyword>) has overturned the ban imposed by India on importing poultry from the US. The WTO ruled that India’s stand was “inconsistent with international norms.” 
 
India now has 60 days to appeal against the WTO's dispute settlement panel decision. An Indian official said, "The decision to move to the Appellate Body will be taken after consulting the Animal Husbandry Department." 
 In 2007, India had banned imports of various agricultural products from the US as in order to prevent outbreak of <keyword id="109029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="avian-influenza">Avian Influenza</keyword> in the country. 
 "India's Avian Influenza (AI) measures are inconsistent with (several articles)....of the <keyword id="6548444" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="SPS">SPS</keyword> (sanitary and phyto-sanitary) Agreement because they are not based on the relevant international standard," the ruling said. 
 
“India’s measures are arbitrarily and unjustifiably discriminate between Members where identical or similar conditions prevail and are applied in a manner which constitutes a disguised restriction on international trade," it added. It also said that the measures were "significantly more trade-restrictive."

Some of them were discharging from their nostrils and some of it was bloody," said Caroline Sim, who volunteers with Flying Free, a group that works to preserve Ulverston's swan population, according to the Guardian.Although the cases of swan deaths in Cumbria have not been directly linked to avian flu at this point, a number of dead swans in Dawlish, Devon — around 250 miles south of Ulverston — were confirmed to have contracted H5N8, the latest strain of avian flu. Swans are spinning in circles, bleeding from their nostrils, and collapsing dead amid an outbreak of avian flu in Europe

New Delhi, Contrary to what some people think that the <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> <keyword id="10860" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virus">virus</keyword>, also known as Avian influenza, is spread to humans via consumption of cooked poultry products, health experts on Sunday stressed that it usually does not infect people as the virus is heat-labile (degraded and killed when subjected to heat). Avian influenza refers to the disease caused by infection with avian (bird) influenza (flu) Type A viruses. These viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. According to the <keyword id="935509" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health">World Health</keyword> organisation (WHO), <keyword id="27178" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cooking">cooking</keyword> of poultry (e.g. chicken, ducks and geese) at or above 70 degree Celsius so that absolutely no meat remains raw and red, is a safe measure to kill the virus in areas with outbreaks in poultry. Richa Sareen, consultant (pulmonology) at Fortis Vasant Kunj in New Delhi, said the virus is heat-labile and it gets killed with cooking temperatures. "At this time, people should eat fully cooked chicken and eggs and not raw or partially cooked ones. One should avoid going to open markets that sell poultry as they are the focal point of the spread," Sareen told IANS. "People who handle poultry should take special precautions. They should wear PPE, gloves and masks while handling birds and should practice frequent hand washing," she added. Although the virus causing bird flu usually does not infect people, but rare cases of human infection with these viruses have been reported, especially in individuals working with infected domestic birds. "The possible cause of infections in humans is when they come in contact with birds with the viruses and enough viruses get into a person's eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled through the excretions of birds," said Kunal Kothari, Senior Physician, Internal Medicine, <keyword id="52870" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SMS-Medical-College">SMS Medical College</keyword> in Jaipur. "The spread of Bird Flu from one individual, who is sick to another has been very rare and data is limited, inefficient and not sustained but as a precaution, we should all be watchful of public health advisory," Kothari added. Bird Flu is a communicable virus among the avian population and human to human spread is not too prominent with the current strain. However, viruses are prone to mutation, so if this virus undergoes mutation in future, it has the potential to spread from human to human and cause a pandemic. Bird flu mostly infects the respiratory system of humans. Common symptoms are fever, runny nose, <keyword id="51415" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sore-throat">sore throat</keyword>, cough, muscle aches, etc. "If severe, it can cause ARDS, multi-organ involvement and even death. The sporadic data on bird flu from the past shows very high mortality, to the tune of 60 per cent. Thus, it becomes important to take precautions now," Sareen mentioned. Nevertheless, maintaining distance from birds in the environment is important as the spread of the avian virus is through the saliva, faecal matter of an infected bird. "The avian virus is airborne. Notify the community health department on seeing sick or dead birds and try not to come in direct contact with these birds without proper masks, gloves and disinfectants," Kothari noted. The Central government has issued a status report of avian influenza in the country, saying the disease has been confirmed in seven states. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry &amp; Dairying (DAHD) has issued an advisory to the affected states so as to avoid further spread of disease. And we now have the highest amount of poultry loss to avian influenza, so this is a worst-case scenario," she added.The researchers believe that bird flu will probably become endemic — a phenomenon where a disease is constantly present within an area or community in the US — which could affect food security and the economy.Last week, the US government started testing four new bird-flu vaccines to try and protect the poultry from this mass outbreak, Reuters reported.<h2>Are humans in danger? </h2>The disease can and does affect humans, but it's rare. The first case of H5N1 infection in a human in the US <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2022/s0428-avian-flu.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was reported in April 2022</a>. A man was also diagnosed with the virus in Chile, <a href="https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreak-news/item/2023-DON453" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the World Health Organization</a>.Most cases of human infection have been in Southeast Asia, according to <a href="https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/global-influenza-programme/2023_march_tableh5n1.pdf?sfvrsn=&amp;download=true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. There were only three cases of human infection in 2023, two in Cambodia, and one in China. China has reported the first case of <keyword id="9496369" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-infection">human infection</keyword> with the <keyword id="11359120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="H10N3-strain">H10N3 strain</keyword> of <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> from the country's eastern Jiangsu province, China's <keyword id="6407801" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-health-commission">National Health Commission</keyword> said on Tuesday. The patient, a 41-year-old man from Zhenjiang city, is currently in a stable condition and meets discharge standards, the state-run CGTN TV reported. Health authorities played down the outbreak, saying the case was a sporadic virus transmission from poultry to humans, and the risk of causing a pandemic was extremely low. The patient was diagnosed as having the H10N3 avian <keyword id="6388288" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="influenza">influenza</keyword> virus on May 28, National Health Commission said in a statement without elaborating on how the man had got infected with the virus. No other cases of human infection with H10N3 have previously been reported globally, it said. H10N3 is a low pathogenic or relatively less severe strain of the virus in poultry and the risk of it spreading on a large scale is very low. There are many different strains of avian influenza in China and some sporadically infect people, generally those working with poultry. <keyword id="2599676" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="H5N8">H5N8</keyword> is a subtype of the Influenza A virus (also known as the bird flu virus). China reports first human infection with H10N3 strain of bird flu in the world

An 87-year-old man in Shanghai fell ill on February 19 and died on March 4, while a man aged 27 in the city got sick on February 27 and died on March 10, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said on its website.
A 35-year-old woman in the eastern province of Anhui became ill on March 9 and is in critical condition, it said.
All three initially suffered fever and coughs but later developed severe pneumonia and problems with breathing, according to the announcement.
The three cases were confirmed Saturday to be infections with the H7N9 sub-strain after the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Preservation had separated it from body samples the day before, the commission said.
The route of infection remained unknown although nothing unusual was detected among 88 people close to the victims, the commission said.
The H7N9 strain had not been transmitted to humans before, it added.
In a separate release, the commission said there are currently no vaccines against H7N9.
It also explained that the delay in announcing the results was because it took time to determine the cause of the illnesses.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), in an emailed statement to AFP, said there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the three reported cases.
It also said transmission to humans "would appear to be inefficient, leading us to believe that the risk to public health is low".
But the WHO said it was continuing closely to monitor the situation.
China is considered one of the nations most at risk from <keyword id="95867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans.
It has in the past been accused of covering up the extent of bird flu outbreaks, exacerbating fears when new cases are reported.
The WHO says more than 360 confirmed human deaths from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza have been reported to it globally from 2003 until March 12 this year.
It says other sub-types have infected humans, including H7N7 and H9N2, and some of these infections led to deaths.
