"Two of the Indian players have been affected and lost connection, when the outcome of the match was still unclear. "The Appeals Committee has examined all the evidence provided by Chess.com, as well as information gathered from other sources about this internet outage. After being informed of their considerations and in absence of an unanimous decision, and taken into account these unprecedented circumstances, as FIDE President I made the decision to award Gold Medals to both teams," he said. Srinath said the appeal was made stating it was due to a server crash of Cloudflare used by www.chess.com. The FIDE President's decision was welcomed by the Indian chess fraternity. Meanwhile, the finals between India and Russia began in the evening. The first match ended with a score of 3-3 with all the six games ending in a draw. The battle of two world champions in the fast chess format - women's world rapid champion from India K. Humpy and women's world blitz champion Kateryna Lagno was an absorbing game. Humpy, after securing an exchange advantage, sacrificed her queen for two bishops to have rooks against the Russian's queen. However, the clock was ticking against Humpy and on the 41st move, she missed out a winning line. Soon the game ended in a draw with perpetual checks by the Russian. All other games - Vidit Santosh Gujrathi vs Ian Nepomniachtchi, P. Harikrishna vs Vladislav Artemiev, D. Harika vs Alexandra Kosteniuk, R. Praggnannandha vs Alexey Sarana and Divya Deshmukh vs Polina Shuvalova - ended in a draw. In the second match, India brought in V. Anand and Sarin in the place of Harikrishna and Praggnanandha. Hassabis, 37, first became known as a child chess star. When he was 13, he had a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demis_Hassabis">sky-high Elo rating</a> which made him the second-best player under age 14 in the world. An Elo rating is used to measure the skill-level of players in games like chess. Hassabis is also a great poker player.
When Hassabis was 17, he was an avid video game designer and creator. He co-programmed Theme Park, a game that would go on to sell millions of copies. Later, he got his PhD in cognitive neuroscience. He has also won the Mind Sports Olympiad five times.
He combined his love of both games and neuroscience and became fascinated with the ways computers could beat humans. He presented at an MIT event in 2011 and explained the history of computers beating humans in classic games such as poker and chess. He also discussed how AI was being worked into video games, whether it was used to make a character's behavior more life-like, or in the controller itself like in Microsoft's Kinect.
"The Video games industry is a big business," <a href="http://video.mit.edu/watch/the-marketplace-for-intelligence-7812/">Hassabis told the audience.</a> "Not as big as Google but it's a global business worth more than $10 billion per year in revenues. AI is found in nearly every triple-A top title."
In 2011, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind, an artificial intelligence company that helps computers think like humans, particularly when it comes to gaming and e-commerce scenarios. Google is acquiring his startup for an reported $400 - 500 million. That makes DeepMind one of London's largest startup exits, following Skype and Playfish in recent years.
