Still, I was still able to find my way around just fine.</p><p>The ship has designated "neighborhoods" for the different attractions and activities. For example, there's a boardwalk and a section dedicated to sports, where I spent a lot of my time.</p><p>I also really loved the relaxing "suite neighborhood," which has an infinity-style pool.</p><h2><strong>I'm always impressed with ships that have a park</strong></h2><p>Honestly, no matter how many times I'm on a ship with a park, I'm still amazed. The concept of a real park at sea is mind-blowing, and this one has over 12,000 plants and trees.</p><p>Throughout the park, there's cool artwork, live music, and multiple indoor and outdoor dining options. I ate the <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-ways-to-cook-different-steak-cuts-from-chef-2022-2">best steak</a> of my life at the restaurant 150 Central Park. </p><div type="image" title="On the left, the central park with greenery on wonder of the seas. On the right, an elaborate suit with a red slide." height="900" width="1200" msid="91711720" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>There's a suite on board that I dream of staying in one day</strong></h2><p>I got to take a tour of the Ultimate Family Suite, and it's by far one of the coolest and largest <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-its-like-where-cruise-ship-crew-lives-photos-2021-10">staterooms</a> I've ever seen.</p><p>There's a slide you can ride from the second floor to the first, as well as a Lego wall, a jacuzzi on the balcony, and a piano-playing staircase.</p><h2><strong>There's a 'floating' bar that guests can ride</strong></h2><p>A mix between a bar and an elevator, the Rising Tide Bar is a <a href="https://www.insider.com/memorable-moments-from-someone-whos-been-on-over-100-cruises-2022-3">unique experience</a>.</p><p>It's so fun to watch guests board the bar — yes, board it<em> —</em> and ride three stories, from deck five's promenade to deck eight's park, or vice versa.</p><p>Sometimes it even stops to offer a better view of special events. </p><h2><strong>The ship has the tallest slide at sea, which drops 10 stories</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="On the left, the fish-shaped entrance to the slide. On the right, a view of the very tall slides." height="900" width="1200" msid="91711722" hostid="261"></div><p>The tallest slide at sea, the Ultimate Abyss isn't a water slide, but rather a dry-mat one. Riding down the 10-story drop was one of the most fun things I did on board. </p><p>Walking up through the giant fish head with a see-through floor was actually scarier than going down — but the ocean views from the top were pretty epic.</p><p>There were also so many sounds and lights during the ride that I felt like I was transported to another universe. </p><h2><strong>The boardwalk was super realistic</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A colorful carousel at the boardwalk on Wonder of the Seas" height="504" width="512" msid="91711724" hostid="261"></div><p>Walking through the cruise ship's boardwalk made me feel like a kid at the Jersey Shore again.</p><p>There was a carousel for guests to ride, plus places to get ice cream, <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-way-to-make-hot-dogs-in-air-fryer-2021-8">hot dogs</a>, and burgers.</p><p>Since it's near where passengers exited from the bottom of the Ultimate Abyss, it was also the best place to people watch.</p>

But ships nowadays are massive, and walking back and forth can add up to a good number of steps. So you should make sure you have <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-bring-on-a-cruise-from-frequent-traveler-photos-2022-3">a comfortable pair of shoes</a>. </p><p>Also, many shore excursions require sneakers, depending on the type of adventure.</p><h2>Make sure you have enough clean underwear </h2><p>There are no self-service laundromats on most cruise ships, so usually, the only laundry option is to send away your clothes for dry cleaning, which is an additional charge.</p><p>To save money, make sure you pack enough essentials, such as <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-wear-white-without-your-underwear-showing-2018-7">undergarments</a>, to last you throughout your stay.</p><h2>You can pack your own wine, but don't forget to bring a corkscrew </h2><p>You can bring a certain amount of <a href="https://www.insider.com/wines-around-the-world-2019-1">wine</a> on board, though the amount varies. But once you carry it on the ship, you'll typically be charged a corkage to open it.</p><p>Save yourself the money by bringing a corkscrew to open it yourself.</p><h2>Protect yourself from the sun with headgear </h2><div type="image" title="Brown sun hat on handle of white suitcase" height="3644" width="4859" msid="91077638" hostid="261"></div><p>The sun on cruises is a lot stronger than most people are used to, especially on Caribbean trips. I've seen the tops of many heads get red an hour into a tour or beach day. </p><p>So make a conscious decision to protect your head with a hat or scarf.</p><h2>Bring some sweaters to stay cozy on the ship</h2><p>It may seem odd to pack sweaters for a <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-best-places-to-stay-in-st-martin-2021-9">Caribbean adventure</a>, but the ship itself is heavily air-conditioned inside and runs very cold.</p><p>Some cruise ships even have ice-skating rinks, and you'll be freezing watching an ice show without a sweater.</p><h2>On the other hand, superhigh heels aren't worth the risk</h2><div type="image" title="person wearing green high heels with red bottoms" height="1844" width="2459" msid="91077639" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm not saying don't bring heels — I want you to look fabulous — but <a href="https://www.insider.com/heels-each-year-2018-8">excessively high-heeled shoes</a> on a swaying ship can lead to injury. I speak from personal experience.</p><h2>Don't bother trying to pack alcohol in shampoo bottles</h2><p>It's a common ruse for cruisers to attempt to sneak alcohol onto a ship in inconspicuous containers, like empty shampoo or mouthwash bottles.</p><p>Besides the soapy taste the booze takes on, security is trained to look out for these tricks and will confiscate the liquor.</p><h2>Irons are prohibited on board</h2><p>While <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-blow-dry-your-hair-2018-11">heated hair appliances</a> are OK, clothing irons are forbidden on most cruises since they're a fire hazard.</p><p>If you pack one, your bag will be flagged and likely confiscated by security until you depart from the cruise.</p><h2>While they may be romantic, real candles are a massive fire hazard</h2><div type="image" title="lit, white candles arranged on corner of tub" height="3389" width="4519" msid="91077640" hostid="261"></div><p>Like irons, candles are a huge fire risk, so they're absolutely prohibited.</p><p>If you're looking for a way to set the mood for your romantic hot-tub date, bring battery-operated candles instead.</p><h2>Even if they're legal in certain places, drugs aren't allowed on board</h2><p>Even though some drugs are <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-happens-after-a-state-legalizes-weed-2018-12">legal in certain states</a>, there is a zero-tolerance policy on cruise ships.</p><p>This also includes prohibited substances cruisers may find in port.</p><h2>Trying to bring a gun may land you in legal trouble</h2><p>This might seem obvious, but I've seen passengers try to bring firearms with them multiple times.</p><p>The gun will be confiscated, and you and your entire party will be denied boarding. This is usually due to port rules or the set itinerary since the boat needs to make it to the next stop in time.</p><p>Make sure to check the itinerary times before booking your cruise if you're hoping to spend more time in a specific port.</p><h2>You may have to sit with other guests at dinner</h2><p>Although this tradition is becoming outdated, there are still instances where you may have to share a large table at dinner with other guests.</p><p>This assignment is sometimes given to you before the cruise.</p><p>Although many guests enjoy the experience of getting to know other passengers, don't worry if you want to keep your group separate - just talk to maître d' once you board for a new table assignment.</p><h2>The port arrival time listed on the itinerary is not when you'll be able to exit the ship</h2><div type="image" title="a view of mountains and water off the front of a ship" height="2274" width="3024" msid="87570507" hostid="261"></div><p>I've seen many disappointed passengers <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-not-to-do-on-cruises-according-to-staff-2021-7">book their tours with outside operators</a> and assume the arrival time listed is when they'll be allowed to go ashore.</p><p>The arrival time is merely when the ship officially docks at the port. The game room has video-game consoles and popular arcade picks like foosball, air hockey, pool, and darts. </p><p>There's also a dedicated front or back deck for the staff to enjoy the sunshine on lounge chairs. Some companies even offer a crew pool.<strong> </strong></p><p>We also have a human-resources center for discussing needs regarding cabins, payroll, contracts, or crew life.</p>

We prefer to be called the crew or employees.</p><p>Although <a href="https://www.insider.com/cruise-ship-kitchen-facts-2019-1">the service's vibe may be different</a> than that of a typical restaurant on land, the crew is one big happy family and excited to deliver fun vacations.</p><h2><strong>There's no reason to immediately ask for upgrades when the ship is full</strong></h2><p>Most of the time, there will be signage or announcements at the guest-services desk on boarding day if the ship is sold out.</p><p>These signs will state that there are no upgrades available, and you should believe them. So many guests stand in long lines just to double-check.</p><p>Some rooms may become available if people don't show up, but the staff won't know until <a href="https://www.insider.com/accessible-cruises-for-people-with-disabilities-2019-4">after leaving the port</a>. So it's best to call down to guest services a few hours after departure and ask then. </p><h2><strong>Leaving dishes on the ground can be a safety hazard</strong></h2><p>There is no designated spot to put your trash on <keyword id="11916830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cruises" source="Orion">cruises</keyword>. You usually enjoy your drinks and food, then leave the dishes on the table for the attendants to clean as a part of the awesome relaxation experience.</p><p>But I often see people leave dishes and glasses on the ground, in the corner of elevators, and even in the middle of staircases.</p><p>This is <a href="https://www.insider.com/cruise-ship-horror-stories-2018-7">very dangerous for other guests</a> - I've seen people get injured by glasses on walkways - so please find the nearest table or bar to leave your dishes.</p><h2><strong>Don't ask the crew if we live on the ship</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Cruise ship employees posing for a photo in a room" height="637" width="850" msid="85515025" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Despite popular belief, we do not helicopter or jet ski to work every day.</p><p>We live, work, eat, breathe, and sleep on board.</p><h2><strong>Returning late to the ship can cause a headache for you and the staff</strong></h2><p>Over my six years, I've seen many guests sprint down the pier to catch the ship on port days.</p><p>Although there is a slight difference between the all-aboard call and the ship's actual departure, it's crucial to be on time.</p><p>Usually, the ship gets charged per minute overtime at the port, which is why most cruises will not wait for late passengers (<a href="https://www.insider.com/things-not-to-do-on-cruises-according-to-staff-2021-7">unless they are on a company-sponsored tour</a>).</p><p>Plus then guest services has to figure out how to get visas, passports, and other documentation because of your mistake.</p><h2><strong>Many guests save pool-deck chairs and never actually use them</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Cruise ship deck with blue chairs and long pool" height="2112" width="2816" msid="85515026" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>When the ship is having a sea day, the pool-deck chairs are usually reserved by towel holders before 8 a.m., but many passengers who claim one don't even use it.</p><p>Ship decks are smaller than land resorts, so please only reserve a chair if you plan on sitting in it at some point so other guests can enjoy the pool, too.</p><h2><strong>Scheduling changes are inconvenient - but don't blame the crew </strong></h2><p>Many guests <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-cruises-for-retirees-to-go-on-2019-5">save money for years to go on a cruise</a> and have their entire itinerary planned to the minute, but if there's ever an unexpected change to the schedule, just know it's absolutely essential.</p><p>Sometimes ports will be substituted or skipped because of bad weather or things will be delayed due to a medical emergency.</p><p>The crew understands and shares that disappointment - it's hard for us to rapidly change schedules too. Most times when this happens, it's out of our control.</p><p>Just know we're doing everything in our power to give you the best possible experience while keeping you extremely safe.</p><h2><strong>You wouldn't usually ask people about their salary on land, so don't do so on board either</strong></h2><p>You most likely wouldn't go into a restaurant and ask the chef what they're paid, but that's <a href="https://www.insider.com/answers-to-commonly-asked-questions-about-tattoos">a touchy and uncomfortable question</a> we get all of the time. </p><p>Guests often ask the crew how much money we make - maybe because some believe we get paid low wages, which simply isn't true.</p><p>Like most typical jobs, our pay is based on the position we have. A few crew members asked where my husband was and were shocked when I said I've never been married.</p><p>But quite a few elderly women said, "Good for you, sweetie," and, "That must feel quite liberating," when they learned I just enjoy traveling and will happily do so solo if I can't find anyone to join me. A few of them even confessed to wishing they could <a href="https://www.insider.com/spend-birthday-traveling-alone-love-solo-travel-2023-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">go on a solo vacation</a> and leave their own spouses behind. </p><h2><strong>Look for other solo cruisers if you want some company</strong></h2><p>Despite so many people making me feel like my solo situation was unique, I certainly wasn't the only one on board traveling by without a guest.</p><p>Another passenger introduced me to a woman she'd met at lunch who was about my age and also cruising solo, and we hit it off right away — turns out, <a href="https://www.insider.com/solo-travel-not-worth-it-after-decade-2023-7">she cruised solo regularly</a> and really loved it.</p><p>We ate quite a few meals together, went shopping in a port town one afternoon, and have kept in touch via Facebook ever since. After interacting with various couples in line at the buffet or while seated next to them in the theatre for a show, they would often invite me to join them for dinner.</p><p>What I loved most about these interactions was that we all shared a common love of travel, so there was rarely a dull moment in our conversations — we traded tales of previous cruises and shared our dreams about the destinations that still remain on our bucket lists. It's also fun to make a cameo appearance in someone else's vacation. </p><h2><strong>Have some excuses ready for when you want to be alone</strong></h2><p>Upon learning of my solo-cruising status, some well-meaning passengers practically tried to force me to join them for a meal or excursion because they thought I was lonely — I honestly found my newfound popularity a bit awkward at times.</p><p>I actually quite enjoy some solitude, so if I wasn't in the mood for company, I made sure to have some excuses ready to go ("I'm at a <em>really</em> good part in this book, so I'm going to finish reading it while I eat" or "I have to answer some work emails and don't want to bore you").</p><p>Sure, I told some white lies because I didn't want to hurt their feelings, but I also wasn't willing to compromise on how I wanted to spend my time on my vacation.   </p><h2><strong>Bring a tripod so you can get all the photos you want</strong></h2><p>I'm used to relying on others to snap photos of me on cruises, so I had to <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-you-need-traveling-alone-frequent-solo-traveler">find an alternate solution when traveling solo</a> if I wanted to move beyond selfies.</p><p>I purchased an inexpensive and lightweight tripod on Amazon that collapses into a small stick when not in use. The rest of the time, she's traveling around the globe, attending conferences, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-carnival-cruise-president-asks-every-employees-she-meets-2017-9">touring the ships in Carnival's fleet</a>, and visiting resorts.</p><p>Each stop on her trip - like speaking in front of an audience of industry professionals, attending an elegant dinner on deck, and marching through the engine room of a cruise ship - requires starkly different wardrobe choices.</p><p>"Going down into the engine room and some of the technical spaces, wearing heels doesn't work," she said.</p><p>So Duffy always checks a bag and brings along a smaller carry-on containing essentials like her laptop, makeup, and flip flops.</p><p>Duffy said her system saves her from a serious bout of pre-journey decision fatigue.</p><p>"It just takes too much effort to try to be that efficient and only bring what amounts to a purse and a carry on," she said. "I don't have to stress about making all these choices and then being sorry or wishing that I had something that I didn't pack. You don't know the weather, what's going to fit me or feel good that day.
