Thursday, June 15: <keyword id="17578676" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyclone-biparjoy" source="Orion">Cyclone Biparjoy</keyword> is ready to touch down over India's west coast today. The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm is expected to make landfall near Gujarat’s Jakhau Port by Thursday evening, and gradually lose steam as it continues to move inland — all while triggering potentially catastrophic torrents of rain in the region. Post-landfall, Biparjoy is expected to continue its northeastward movement until it eventually fizzles out over Rajasthan. But even during its gradual deintensification from a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm to a low-pressure area, the system will carry on dumping an ocean-worth of rain over the desert state. According to the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>), the southwestern parts of Rajasthan will be in for heavy to very heavy (64.5 mm-224.5 mm) and even extremely heavy downpours (more than 224.5 mm) this Friday and Saturday (June 16-17). The intense precipitation will slowly spill into southeast Rajasthan by Saturday. And while not as intense, some light or moderate showers may also be observed in most parts of the state. In fact, some experts reckon some parts of western and northwestern India may end up accumulating more than the average June rainfall within the next two days! Therefore, it is advisable for the regional residents to keep an umbrella handy this weekend, even if they do not live in areas expected to beat the brunt of the cyclone’s impact. Moreover, squalls winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are likely over South Rajasthan from Friday noon to evening, followed by winds at 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph till Saturday midnight. Given these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch (meaning be updated) over Rajasthan for today, but this will quickly escalate. On Friday, the West Rajasthan subdivision will be placed under a red warning — the highest level of warning that cautions residents to take necessary action against the hazardous weather. Thereafter, the red warning will also spread to East Rajasthan on Saturday. After that, both subdivisions will be downgraded to an orange alert (meaning be prepared) for Sunday before deintensifying back into yellow for Monday. In particular, the following districts within the state will remain on orange alert and red warning in the coming days: Saturday, June 17: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Jaisalmer, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Sunday, June 18: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Ajmer, Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Monday, June 19: Jaipur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Pali and Udaipur on orange alert Further, as East India reels under searing heatwaves, Biparjoy's rainy and windy shenanigans will induce a distinct chill in the west. IMD forecasts that daytime temperatures in Northwest India will likely fall by 2-4°C over the next five days. As the cyclone gradually deintensifies, the frightening conditions will eventually lull out in a few days. But while the tumultuous times persist, it is imperative that you take the necessary steps to protect yourself against any potential danger from the weather behemoth.

EBITDA includes the impact of forex mark-to-market gain or loss. In Q1 FY24, forex gain was ₹10.93 crore and in the same quarter last year, it saw a forex loss of ₹1201.14 crore. The company said it was able to deliver its best ever quarterly performance due to cargo volume growth of 12%, and a 200 basis point jump in domestic market share. This is in spite of the fact that over 50% of the company’s total port capacity was adversely impacted for around six days due to the Cyclone Biparjoy. “Our continuous efforts on improving operational efficiencies have resulted in domestic ports business EBITDA margin of 72% and logistics business EBITDA margin of 28%, which is higher than the reported margins of listed peers from India,” said <keyword id="1033941" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="karan-adani" source="Orion">Karan Adani</keyword>, CEO and whole time director of Adani Ports &amp; SEZ. The monthly cargo volume as its newly acquired assets — Israel’s Haifa Port and <keyword id="6779907" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="karaikal-port" source="Orion">Karaikal Port</keyword> near Chennai touched the ‘one million metric tonne mark’. Its cargo volumes crossed 100 MMT during the quarter. “We are well on course to achieve our FY24 cargo volume guidance of 370-390 MMT,” added Adani. These cargo, the company forecasts, will result in a revenue of ₹24,000-25,000 crore in FY24 and EBITDA of ₹14,500-15,000 crore. The total capex during the year is expected to be at ₹4,000-4,500 crore. Growth in cargo volume for the quarter was led by containers which grew at 15%, while dry cargo grew at 10% and liquids excluding crude grew at 7%). The automobile segment, which is a small proportion of overall volumes, saw a 54% jump in volumes. The non-Mundra domestic ports volumes grew at 17% Y-o-Y while Mundra volumes were down 2% due to Cyclone Biparjoy. The share of non-Mundra domestic ports increased to 58% in the cargo basket from 53% during the quarter, the company said in its press release. Ports business EBITDA margin expanded by around 150 bps to 72% with improved realization and operating efficiencies Logistics rail volumes grew by 18% and here too EBIDTA margin expanded by around 150 bps to 28% – aided by increase in cargo volumes and sweating of assets.

According to IMD, the cyclonic storm weakened into a 'deep depression' at 11:30 pm on Friday over Southeast Pakistan. "Cyclonic Storm <keyword id="13860733" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biparjoy" source="Orion">Biparjoy</keyword> weakened into a Deep Depression at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 16th June, 2023 over Southeast Pakistan adjoining Southwest Rajasthan and Kutch about 100 km northeast of Dholavira. To weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours," IMD said in a tweet. Meanwhile, earlier it was reported that several trees were uprooted in Bhuj, Kutch, due to the impact of the cyclone. Out of the damaged property, 414 feeders, 221 electric poles and one TC were made operational immediately. The power supply was restored in 367 villages of Jamnagar district. The one current transformer that was made functional promptly was located in Kalavad taluka of Jamnagar. Meanwhile, giving an update NDRF Director General Atul Karwal on Friday said that there has been no loss of lives reported after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat. "Twenty-four animals have died and 23 people have been injured. Electricity supply has been interrupted in about a thousand villages. 800 trees have fallen. It is not raining heavily anywhere except Rajkot," the NDRF DG Karwal said. (ANI)

Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues Orange alert for Saurashtra, Kutch coasts in Gujarat

Jaipur, Several areas of Jalore and Barmer districts in Rajasthan witnessed <keyword id="45172" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Heavy-Rain" source="Orion">heavy rain</keyword> due to Cyclone Biparjoy, which moved towards the desert state following its landfall in Gujarat, officials said on Friday. A meteorological department official said 60-70 mm rains occurred at a few places on Thursday night and extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur in both the districts and adjoining areas on Friday. According to the official, 69 mm rainfall was recorded in Jalore till Friday morning. The department has sounded a "red" alert for Jalore and Barmer. More than 200 mm rainfall may occur in the areas where the alert has been sounded. The cyclone will weaken and move further over Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pali and Sirohi where very heavy rainfall is likely, the official said, adding that heavy rains may also occur in Rajsamand, Dungarpur and nearby areas on Friday and Saturday. Strong winds with a speed of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour are expected in the adjoining areas of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jalore and Jodhpur on Friday and in the adjoining areas of Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ajmer on Saturday. Eight companies of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Jaipur, Kota, Bharatpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner and one company of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Kishangarh in Ajmer district to rescue people affected by the heavy rains. The local administration in the affected districts has also made preparations, such as arrangement of pumps and deployment of civil defence and disaster management teams, in view of the "red" and "orange" alerts.

Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues heavy rainfall warning, 67 trains cancelled

The India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) forecasts that Bihar will experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions from June 8 to 12, while Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand are expected to endure similar conditions from June 8 to 11.A "Additionally, Odisha and the sub-Himalayan West Bengal region will likely face heatwave conditions during June 8-10. Telangana will experience high temperatures on June 8 and 9, while parts of Uttar Pradesh will persist with heatwave conditions until June 11," the IMD said. Amidst this heatwave, the southwest monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of the <keyword id="6378065" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="central" source="Orion">central</keyword> Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep area, Kerala, parts of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, the remaining parts of Gulf of Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and Bay of Bengal on Thursday. "Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today," said the IMD. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Karnataka and some more parts of southwest, Central and northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeastern states during next 48 hours," it said. Meanwhile, a senior official of IMD said that temperatures in northwest India are likely to rise, reaching as high as 40-42 degree Celsius. "However, no heatwave conditions are anticipated in the region for the next four to five days. In contrast, east India and adjoining areas of northwest India, such as east Uttar Pradesh, are currently experiencing heatwave conditions. While eastern India grapples with extreme heat, other parts of the country have encountered unexpected hailstorms and excessive rainfall. The IMD also issued a warning on Thursday, cautioning about isolated hailstorms in Uttarakhand on June 11 and 12. Meteorologists attribute the unusual surplus of rainfall and below-normal temperatures during the pre-monsoon season (March to May) to an increased frequency of Western disturbances. These weather systems originate in the Mediterranean region and bring untimely rain to northwest India. Meanwhile, the western coast of India is bracing itself for heavy rainfall over the upcoming weekend as Cyclone Biparjoy intensifies. Sandhu said this during the varsity's annual convocation that was held on Friday at the campus premises. "Our government is working closely with their counterparts in Canada to resolve the issue which we are hopeful will happen soon," he said while talking to the media. Left in the lurch, 700-odd Indian students, mostly from Punjab, are facing <keyword id="106041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deportation" source="Orion">deportation</keyword> from Canada after the authorities in the country found their admission offer letters to be fake. Satnam Singh Sandhu said, "The university will provide every possible help to these students if they are deported. We will give them admission and enroll them in the same batches. Their credit score mapping will be carried out properly so that the credits earned by them in their previous institutions are not wasted. Bridge courses will also be offered to them if any gap is found during the credit score mapping. The university will make sure that they do not face any loss." Sandhu also said that if these students are deported, later the university will also assist them in pursuing their study abroad dreams in legitimate ways. "We understand the situation they are facing right now in the foreign country. We can feel their pain and stand with their families back in India," said Satnam Singh Sandhu, adding that the university is also exploring starting a helpline number for the affected students and their families. Meanwhile, more than 1400 students were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate, and Ph.D. degrees during the annual convocation held at CU on Friday. The convocation ceremony was attended by former president of India Ram Nath Kovind as chief guest. Chandigarh University offers support to 700 Indian students facing deportation from Canada

The High <keyword id="6355578" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="court" source="Orion">Court</keyword> of Karnataka has orally warned <keyword id="6354576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword> (Meta) that it may order its operations in India to be shut down if it does not cooperate with police investigation over a <keyword id="71277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fake-profile" source="Orion">fake profile</keyword>. An Indian national from Mangaluru, <keyword id="229057" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shailesh-kumar" source="Orion">Shailesh Kumar</keyword>, is in prison in Saudi Arabia allegedly over a derogatory Facebook post against the king of that nation and Islam. His wife Kavitha has complained to the local police that it was a fake profile of her husband on which the derogatory message was posted. The police have failed to complete the investigation on the fake profile prompting Kavitha to approach the high court. Her petition, originally filed in 2021, was heard by Justice Krishna S Dixit on Wednesday. Earlier on June 12, the HC had ordered: "The Commissioner of Police, Mangalore (Mangaluru), is directed to study the case papers and be present before the Court to answer as to why there has been arguably enormous delay in accomplishing the investigation of the matter when a citizen of this country is languishing in a jail of a foreign country after trial and conviction when his specific stand was that his Facebook account was hacked." Mangaluru city police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar Jain and the investigating officer in the case were present in the HC on Wednesday. Kavitha's complaint to the police stated that Shailesh has been working in Saudi Arabia for the past 25 years. He had put up a post in support of the Indian Government's Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) move. He allegedly received a threat call over this post following which he deleted his account. Subsequently, some miscreants created a fake account in his name and uploaded a derogatory post against the Saudi king and Islam, she said. Following this post, Shailesh was arrested in Saudi Arabia, tried and sentenced to 15 years in jail. Based on the information he provided, his wife filed the police complaint about the fake profile in her husband's name. The police commissioner informed the HC on Wednesday that the investigation has been delayed as Facebook has not cooperated with the police. When the HC questioned the counsel for Facebook, the counsel informed the court that he had no information about the exact location of the incident. This prompted the HC to issue the warning that the operations of Facebook would have to be ordered to shut down if it did not cooperate with the investigation. The counsel sought a week's time to submit the details required. The HC adjourned the hearing to June 22 directing Facebook to submit a detailed report on the incident and relevant information. Meta, Facebook's parent company, was arraigned as a party to the petition on May 29, 2023. The HC also directed the <keyword id="6362177" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="union-government" source="Orion">Union government</keyword> to detail the steps taken to secure the Indian national who has been jailed in a foreign prison in a fake case. "Union Government should also make a statement based upon records to be given in a sealed cover as to what happened to the concerned citizen; whether he was given lawyer's assistance on a foreign soil; whether apparently trial proceedings were held with fairness standards as obtaining in the international criminal law," the HC's June 12 order read. The HC also warned the Union government that "if the details as sought are not furnished, the concerned secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs may be summoned personally before the Court." Karnataka HC warns Facebook its operations would be shut down if it does not cooperate with police investigation

Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a double-digit growth in dispatches to dealers, while Kia saw a dip in wholesales last month. MG Motor India also reported a double-digit increase in retail sales in June 2023 compared to the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker, said its domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 8 per cent to 1,33,027 units in June against 1,22,685 units in the year-ago period. Sales of mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, fell marginally to 14,054 units compared to 14,442 units a year ago. Similarly, sales in the compact segment, models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire, slumped 17 per cent to 64,471 units from 77,746 cars in June 2022. Utility vehicle sales, including Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga, however, surged over two-fold to 43,404 units compared to 18,860 vehicles in the year-ago month, MSI said. MSI Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava said the automaker grew faster than the industry in June, enabling it to scale up its overall market share by 2.4 per cent to 41 per cent. The overall passenger vehicle industry dispatches grew by 1.9 per cent to 3,27,700 lakh units from 3,21,600 lakh units in the year-ago period, he said. MSI, on the other hand, dispatched 1,33,027 lakh passenger vehicles last month, up 8 per cent from 1,22,685 lakh units in June 2022. Srivastava noted that the domestic passenger vehicle segment has crossed 20 lakh sales-mark in the first half of the year, a 10 per cent growth over 18.31 lakh units dispatched in the January-June period of 2022. MSI dispatches to dealers during the period stood at 8,61,000 units over 7,87,000 units in the corresponding period a year ago, he added. He noted that the company's SUV market share rose to 21 per cent in the April-June quarter this fiscal, compared to an 8.5 per cent market share in the same period of the preceding fiscal. Srivastava noted that with the addition of new models like Jimny and Fronx, the company remained hopeful of attaining around 25 per cent market share in the segment to take the top slot in the segment by the end of the current financial year. On supply chain shortages, he said the situation is expected to get better in the current quarter. MSI currently has a pending order backlog of 3.55 lakh units, he stated. When asked about challenges, Srivastava said that high-interest rates and chances of an erratic monsoon were some of the factors, which the company was closely monitoring. Rival Hyundai Motor India reported a 2 per cent rise in its domestic sales at 50,001 units last month from 49,001 units in June 2022. "There is a positive customer traction for all our products and Verna, Creta and Tucson have attained leadership positions in their respective segments in the first half of CY23," HMIL COO Tarun Garg said. Toyota Kirloskar Motor also said its total wholesales increased 19 per cent to 19,608 units in June compared to 16,512 units in the year-ago period. Its domestic dispatches stood at 18,237 units while overseas shipments were at 1,371 units. "Ever since the launch of Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross, we are witnessing continued high acceptance by our customers," TKM Vice President (Sales and Strategic Marketing) Atul Sood said. On the other hand, Kia India said its domestic wholesales declined 19 per cent to 19,391 units in June. The company dispatched 24,024 units to dealers in June 2022. "We have kept our performance steady with healthy growth, despite the realignment of our manufacturing process to accommodate the development of the new Seltos this month," Kia India National Head (Sales &amp; Marketing) Hardeep Singh Brar said. With the launch of new Seltos, the automaker aims to be one of the top mid-SUV segment leaders again and hopes for a strong sales surge, he added. Another automaker, MG Motor India reported a 14 per cent increase in retail sales at 5,125 units in June 2023 against 4,504 units in the same month last year. "Supplies were disrupted in the wake of cyclone Biparjoy though customer demand should now gain momentum following the monsoon as India gears up for a long festive season," the company said.
