Grace and Mercy sold those shares for about $325 million in total between 2017 and 2018, scoring a handsome $186 million gain.However, if the foundation had kept the gifts instead of selling them, they would fetch around $946 million today, reflecting the three stocks' price gains in recent years.Grace and Mercy also bought shares in Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Expedia, and other companies, its tax filings show. It cashed them in for a total of $200 million between 2014 and 2016, notching a $103 million gain.Those shares would be worth $722 million today, including Amazon stock worth $449 million and Netflix shares worth $219 million.Grace and Mercy, which boasted nearly $500 million in assets at the end of 2018, may have cashed in Hwang's stock gifts because it needed to <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> grants to charities and fund its operations. But it undoubtedly left money on the table by selling them.Hwang is one of several "tiger cubs" who left billionaire investor Julian Robertson's Tiger Management to start their own funds. I just graduated from a Christian college on Wall Street, and it's on the verge of going under.<a href="https://www.tkc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The King's College</a> is a tiny, private liberal arts school located in New York City's Financial District. Adjacent to the New York Stock Exchange and a short stroll from the famous Charging Bull, the college gets plenty of foot traffic but largely goes unnoticed. The entire campus is contained within three floors of a non-descript high-rise. But now the school is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/17/nyregion/kings-college-manhattan-possible-closing.html">grabbing national headlines</a> as it's on the brink of closing due to a drop in enrollment and financial troubles. It needs $2.6 million just to finish the spring semester. King's seemed like the perfect escape from my small-town childhood in rural Pennsylvania. The school offered both a tight-knit community and the big city. And as an Asian woman who grew up in white, conservative Christian spaces, I didn't feel out of place in a student body that was predominantly white. But I quicky found the school to have a dualistic culture that was offputting. King's is unlike other Christian colleges that are typically in rural areas or on the outskirts of larger, more conservative cities. As a result, the school draws a mixed crowd — those who come to King's for the city and those who come to King's for King's.I'm embarrassed to have gone to King's, now more than ever. I graduated this winter feeling disillusioned by the whole experience and, honestly, I think it had it coming.<h2>'Don't just go to college, come to King's'</h2>So how does a small, Christian school end up in the heart of the country's largest city?That's part of the school's pitch. It touts the best way to change culture is by engaging with it directly — to be "in the world" but not "of the world," as the Bible teaches. King's mission is to prepare students "for careers in which they help to shape and eventually to lead strategic public and private institutions" by way of a classical education taught through a Christian worldview.In many ways, it achieved that goal. King's alumni work at financial-services companies, including Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, and Fidelity. Meanwhile, others cover finance at publications including Insider, Fortune, and the New York Post.The school was even a beneficiary of Archegos Capital Management founder Bill Hwang's philanthropic arm, the Grace and Mercy Foundation. In 2021, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/who-is-bill-hwang-archegos-tiger-cub-christian-insider-trading-2021-3-1030255723">Hwang</a> was at the center of a high-profile Wall Street implosion in which he was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/four-charged-connection-multibillion-dollar-collapse-archegos-capital-management" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charged with fraud and racketeering</a>. He is currently awaiting trial.Hwang's charity was perhaps most notable among the student body for funding the free Chick-fil-A the school offered at its weekly Public Reading of Scripture. When the free chicken sandwiches disappeared, <a href="https://www.empirestatetribune.com/est/2/4/2023/attendance-at-prs-drops-after-recent-funding-changes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">so, too, did the students</a>.<div type="image" title="The King's College" height="4250" width="5667" msid="98758579" hostid="261" sizebytes="2766998"></div>There are two kinds of King's students: those who just go to King's and those who are "King's people." The former tend to dissociate from "Kingsian" culture, which is ironic given one of the school's marketing campaigns is entirely focused around the phrase, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpZr7okS0n0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Don't just go to college, come to King's."</a> The latter truly love the school and its mission. They seek to embody the school's words — "good, brave, and ready." Adherence to the honor code is the best example of the duality of the school. Students can report their peers for violating school rules, which includes everything from underage drinking or drug possession to engaging in sexual activity or violating the school's business-casual dress code. It is meant to promote integrity and virtue within the student body, but in actuality, it creates an environment of petty tattle-taling and distrust between students. <h2>King's didn't live up to its promise to 'engage culture'</h2>I give some credit to King's. In class, I was challenged to wrestle with concepts I naively thought I already understood, like political ideology and religion. Through my education, I was motivated to question my beliefs, correct my ignorance, and address my misgivings. But I found many of my peers wouldn't truly consider the merit of the opinions that differed from their own.My shift in mindset — and my peers unwillingness to see the other side of things — opened my eyes to what I considered narrow-mindedness being fostered in King's classrooms. For as much as the school looks to "engage culture," I found that its religious and political views resulted in an insular student body largely ignorant and apathetic to the people and struggles right outside its campus doors.Through its Christian worldview, King's teaches students to resist secular culture. A symptom of that teaching is the belief that mainstream media is the purveyor of anti-Christian sentiment.<div type="image" title="Paige Hagy" height="2750" width="3661" msid="98758583" hostid="261" sizebytes="352246"></div>As a journalism major, I was heavily involved with the student newspaper, the Empire State Tribune. To agree to be an editor of the newspaper was to sign on as a target of antagonism from faculty and a point of contention among the student body. In one instance, one professor emailed my journalism advisor, calling me and a fellow editor "lazy" and "incompetent" over an article that was fairly reported and unbiased.The hard switch in my attitude came in 2021. I quickly saw that the school was unwilling — in the best cases, slow — to respond to the issues affecting students of color, such as the spike in violence against Asian Americans during the pandemic. It wasn't until two weeks following the deadly Atlanta Spa shootings that King's began to coordinate any sort of statement or organize resources for its Asian American Pacific Islander students. Even then, the response itself was student-led and spurred by students, including myself, who emailed administration and posted on social media to garner attention. <h2>For all its faults, I don't want King's to shut down</h2>And now the college is on the brink of collapse. King's advised current students to look into transferring. <a href="https://cairn.edu/dr-steele-brand-hired-to-lead-cairn-universitys-new-politics-philosophy-and-history-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Some professors are leaving</a> after this semester, and others have posted their CVs on LinkedIn looking for work.A bid for help from the school to alumni, parents, and prospective donors raised over $325,000 as of March 3, according to a spokesperson for the school."We are deeply grateful for the generosity and support of our community. But it appears to be a short-term solution, as the loan doesn't cover the two months of back-rent owed for the apartments it leases as "on-campus" housing.King's has gone down this road before. The school, <a href="https://www.tkc.edu/stories/november-2016-history-spotlight-swift-rise-slow-fall-briarcliff-lodge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">then located at Briarcliff Manor</a> in upstate New York, experienced financial troubles that ultimately led to its closure in 1994. It resurrected itself five years later in the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/20/nyregion/20metjournal.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">basement of the Empire State Building</a> before it was <a href="https://www.tkc.edu/stories/january-2017-history-spotlight-bygone-glamour-empire-state-building/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed out by the building's management</a> and moved to its current Financial District campus in 2012.So at a college where I felt unheard, unseen, and, at times, even antagonized as a result of its conservative ideologies, I can't say I'm proud to have gone to King's.All that being said, and this may come as a shock, I don't want the school to close. Watching my alma mater not-so-slowly but surely go down the drain isn't easy. I met some of my best friends at King's, and I have fond memories from those three, transformative years.I don't want the college to close, but I do think they had it coming for the ideals and people it pedestaled and the others it squashed.At the end of the day, I'm just glad I got out in time.

He pleaded guilty to insider trading in 2012, forked over $60 million to settle related charges, and closed down his fund. He was also banned from trading securities in Hong Kong for four years in 2014.Here's a quick look at Hwang's life so far.<h2>A religious upbringing</h2>Hwang was born in the mid-1960s and raised as a devout Christian. His father was a church pastor and his mother served as a missionary in Mexico, he said in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fPOaGkDGDg">2018 interview</a> promoting communal bible readings.The fund manager smiles a lot, cracks jokes, and comes across as humble in the interview. He doesn't take himself too seriously, but clearly feels a burning desire to spread the gospel.Faith has guided Hwang's entire career. He sees investing as his calling, and believes God "loves" when he backs companies that contribute to humanity's progress. "It's not all about money," he said in another <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnbeQ-WFOUU">2018 interview</a>.Hwang gave the example of one of his larger investments, Linkedin. He suggested that God loves the social-media group's goal of helping people to find jobs and realize their potential."I'm like a little child looking for what can I do today, where can I invest, to please our God," he said. Inspired by Jesus Christ tirelessly working for his father, Hwang added, "I'm not going to retire until he pulls me back."Hwang is involved in several Christian organizations. He's the cofounder of the Grace and Mercy Foundation, a contributor to Focus on the Family, and a trustee of the Fuller Theology Seminar, the three groups' websites show.<h2>Becoming a tiger cub</h2>Hwang holds an economics degree from UCLA and a MBA from Carnegie Mellon, <a href="https://www.focusonthefamily.com/contributors/bill-hwang/">an online biography shows</a>. He worked as a stock salesperson at Peregrine Securities and Hyundia Securities early in his career, until he caught the eye of one of his clients, Julian Robertson. He soon went to work under the veteran investor at his storied hedge fund, <keyword id="1473615" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger-Management">Tiger Management</keyword>, and became one of his protégés. Robertson closed his fund in 2000, but handed Hwang about $25 million to launch his own fund, Tiger Asia Management. One of several "Tiger cubs," Hwang grew his firm's assets to over $5 billion at its peak, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ex-tiger-asia-founder-triggers-30-billion-in-large-stocks-sales-11616973350">The Wall Street Journal says</a>, and delivered an annualized return of 16%, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-28/once-high-flying-tiger-cub-stumbles-again-on-leveraged-bets">according to Bloomberg</a>.However, Hwang shuttered the fund in 2012 after pleading guilty to insider trading in federal court that year. He paid a total of $60 million to settle <a href="https://www.sec.gov/litigation/complaints/2012/comp-pr2012-264.pdf">civil and criminal charges</a> of manipulating Chinese stocks, and his fund forfeited about $16 million in related profits.<h2>Going private</h2>Hwang converted Tiger Asia into a family office, Archegos, in 2013. The switch meant he no longer managed any outside money, slashing the regulatory disclosures required of him.Archegos roped in several major banks to place leveraged bets on multiple stocks. However, the <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> turned against the fund last week, prompting brokers to issue "margin calls" or demand more money as collateral. When Hwang failed to comply, the banks liquidated over $20 billion worth of his positions to recover their money, sparking a brutal sell-off across a dozen stocks.The full scale of the fallout from Archegos blowing up won't be known for a while. Their characters don't exactly notice each other in a romantic or sexual way until about 2.5 seasons after that.But if you pay close attention to their glances at each other on the edges of scenes, or the look on April's face as she smacks Jackson in the head for staring at one of Alex's (Justin Chambers) one-night stands, or Jackson's awkward pat of April's knee when she's melting down about the medical boards hours before their random, drunken first hookup — it's always evident that they care deeply about each other. While most <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv" source="Orion">TV</keyword> couples come together because of dialogue written on the page, Japril's beginning is in the margins. And from the second the "Grey's Anatomy" writers decided to give Jackson and April a shot, Williams and Drew told Insider the two of them were fully committed to the story — maybe even a little too much. "I remember you showed up with a whole marked-up script with script ideas," Drew laughed, recalling Williams' eagerness to get their first intimate scenes together during the medical boards on season eight right. He conceded that his ideas didn't go over well at the time. It's "Grey's Anatomy" after all. Their love was genuine but their choice to get married was impulsive. So their newlywed phase was marred with fights where TV couples are usually allowed a bit of romance. Drew said that she and Williams worked hard to try and fill in gaps for the audience, some of which never came to fruition. "We had a whole pitch for an entire series based on that road trip," Drew said of the few scenes we see of Japril traveling together to get married after April runs away from her wedding to Matthew. Williams confirmed that their series pitch is why "Unbreak My Heart" exists. Soon after their wedding, a surprise pregnancy ended with an induction termination and their son, Samuel, died of a fatal type of <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/osteogenesis-imperfecta#:~:text=Osteogenesis%20imperfecta%20(OI)%20is%20an,range%20from%20mild%20to%20severe.">osteogenesis imperfecta</a>, or brittle bone disease, a genetic bone disorder that is present at birth.After Samuel's death on season 11, Jackson and April let grief tear them apart in strange ways instead of helping each other through the pain. While Jackson and April eventually divorced, fans held out hope that it could have just been the beginning of a powerful reconciliation story about grief, forgiveness, and love. Unfortunately, that's not what they got.<h2>Williams told Insider he and Drew 'carved' much of Japril's story, and particularly its 'Grey's Anatomy' ending, 'on our own'</h2><div type="image" title="Grey's Anatomy season 17 episode “Look Up Child”" height="2000" width="2666" msid="89980883" hostid="261"></div>Drew was asked to leave the hit medical drama at the end of season 14 in 2018 for "creative reasons" that showrunner Krista Vernoff did not specify in a 2018 <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/03/greys-anatomy-jessica-capshaw-sarah-drew-exit-abc-medical-drama-1202316987/">statement to Deadline</a>. For much of the two seasons prior to Drew's exit, many fans remained convinced that Jackson and April were on the verge of an eventual reconciliation, which made Drew's unexpected departure all the more frustrating.Some of that unresolved romantic tension, whether written on the page or not, may have been because the costars worked hard to portray the natural emotion in Japril's complicated relationship no matter what, even when producers on the show may have wanted them to downplay it. Drew recalled that she was asked to play April telling Jackson she wanted to move out of the apartment they shared to raise their daughter together in season 14 "with no emotion." A completely different story made it onscreen on season 17's 14th episode, "Look Up, Child." We learn at the end of the episode that Matthew and April are getting a divorce. So, the exes, now both single, move to Boston with their daughter and hope for a future together. "Jesse and I talked about it and thought it would be more satisfying to the audience if they were left with some hope for Japril reuniting," Drew wrote to Insider. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Victims of so-called "<keyword id="6429802" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="revenge-porn">revenge porn</keyword>" are struggling to report their content to Instagram due to the coronavirus pandemic. </li><li>According to screenshots seen by Insider, victims are being told that their content might take longer to be reviewed due to the company having a reduced workforce that is working from home.</li><li>One victim Insider spoke to, who had no issues reporting her images in the past, said that "old wounds" were reopened after her pictures popped up on Instagram again during the lockdown period.</li><li>A student activist from France, who has spent most of her lockdown helping victims remove around 300 "fisha" or "shame" accounts, said she'd seen the worst content on Instagram.</li><li>Since Instagram does not have specific language in their reporting flows to allow users to flag content strictly as "revenge porn", users have to report it as "nudity" instead which means it won't be given top priority.</li></ul>Victims of image-based abuse are struggling to get their explicit pictures removed on Instagram, despite a rise in incidents over the lockdown period. In some cases, the reported pictures or accounts are left on the platform for days. The distressed victims of so-called "revenge porn" are being told that due to COVID-19, the company has fewer moderators to review reports and are therefore forced to "prioritize content," according to screenshots seen by Insider. This policy change is in stark contrast to evidence that revenge porn cases have increased steeply.The UK government-funded Revenge Porn Hotline, for adult victims, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-52413994">told the BBC in April</a> that traffic to its website nearly doubled in the week after the country went on lockdown, on March 23. It opened more cases in the month that followed than any other four-week period since the offense was first made illegal in 2015.As a result, the hotline, which only has two full-time employees, has been given extra funding. In England and Wales, <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-law-to-tackle-revenge-porn">revenge porn is a criminal offense</a> with a maximum punishment of up to two years in prison.The rise in cases can be attributed to "the increased use of the internet and social media, as well as heightened emotions," according to Professor Clare McGlynn, a law professor at Durham University, who was quoted on the BBC.An increase in "sexting" between couples who were not isolating together during the lockdown could also have contributed to the surge, the BBC reported.Simultaneously, Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, has been working with a reduced workforce since the coronavirus outbreak, <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2020/06/coronavirus/#keeping-our-teams-safe">a public statement released by the company said.</a>As a result, it has been forced to prioritize the reviewing of certain content and is relying heavily on AI technology to do the job for them.In a comment to Insider, a Facebook company spokesperson said: "Since March, when we sent our content reviewers home to protect them from COVID-19, we've been prioritizing reviewing content that has the greatest potential to cause harm. This includes reports of non-consensual intimate imagery, which we have continued to review during this time." <h2>"I've been reliving the trauma"</h2>Grace*, 21, a student from Bristol who has chosen to be anonymous, was horrified after she found that nude images of her that had initially been posted on social media by her ex-boyfriend in 2018 — and were removed — were again posted on Instagram during the lockdown period.The student, who had no problems with reporting the images in 2018, says her experience during lockdown has been drastically different and resulted in a great deal of stress. "I reported the account several times and also asked my friends to do the same but it took Instagram almost 10 days to take any action and every day I was having mini panic attacks because of it," she told Insider.After reporting the account that had reshared her images, Grace said that an automated Instagram message warned her that not all flagged content could be reviewed due to COVID-19, but she didn't expect it to be ignored for so long. She was also advised to block the account. "I was watching as it stayed on there, it was so awful I had to stop checking," she said.After her first experience with revenge porn in 2018, she had to seek treatment with a university therapist for several weeks because of how traumatizing it was for her. Grace said that the reemergence of her pictures "opened old wounds," and that it has "only added to the current stress of what's been happening in the world." "When I saw them again, I couldn't believe it, I have been reliving the trauma I had last year, the one I've been working so hard to work on," she added.<h2>These cases are not just happening in the UK</h2>Shanley Clemot McLaren, 22, a student from Paris, France, has helped hundreds of revenge porn victims after observing a surge of so-called "fisha" accounts — the French term for "shame" — over the lockdown period. Clemot McLaren, whose studies were put on hold during the lockdown period, says that she has seen at least 500 of these accounts emerge on social media since the coronavirus restrictions were put in place in France in mid-March.While these "fisha" accounts have been appearing across different social media platforms including Twitter and encrypted messaging service Telegram, Clemot McLaren told Insider that she's seen the worst content on Instagram. "The most shocking content I've seen has been on Instagram. I don't really get it to be frank. So many girls are fully nude, " she said."The worst was a gang rape video and that image is going to stay in my brain forever. It was on Instagram for two days, and had millions of people who saw it," she added. But she thinks more can be done."I'm happy that we can make a difference but these companies should be doing more, especially now," she said.<h2>Instagram has been working with a reduced team</h2>In mid-March, <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2020/06/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the company announced</a> it would send home most of its employees, including its team of content moderators, hired to review posts flagged by users or the company's software to determine if the content is inappropriate or harmful.Instagram explained that it would be difficult for moderators to be working from home. Their home network wasn't secure enough for the data they were looking at, and there were no on-site resources that could help employees who were finding the job emotionally taxing.As a result, it has made several changes to how it reviews content. It includes the increased usage of automation, which <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/3/17/21183557/coronavirus-youtube-facebook-twitter-social-media" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it has already acknowledged</a> could lead to mistakes and omissions. It also began prioritizing user reports based on their potential for harm. The company told Insider that non-consensual imagery is on their priority list, alongside other sensitive areas including suicide and self-harm, terrorism, and child exploitation. Nudity, however, is not included in this list, Facebook informed Insider, by email.Instagram does not have specific language in their reporting flows to allow users to flag content as "revenge porn." Instead, they must flag it as nudity or harassment, which means it won't be given top priority.This week, Facebook said that some content reviewers had returned to the office voluntarily, to help review the most sensitive content that could cause harm.<h2>The trend of image-based abuse will outlast the pandemic</h2>Image-based abuse is also becoming a common feature of domestic abuse, which has seen a drastic increase in the lockdown period. Calls to Britain's national domestic abuse helpline have soared 66% since the lockdown, <a href="https://news.trust.org/item/20200604150944-sp205/">according to the Thompson Reuters Foundation.</a>Johanna Nelles, executive secretary of the Istanbul convention — a European treaty to prevent violence against women — <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-europe-porn-trfn/revenge-porn-soars-in-europes-coronavirus-lockdown-as-student-fights-back-idUSKBN22H2I6">told Reuters</a> that the trend of image-based abuse, as well as the shame and anxiety that accompanies it, will likely outlast the pandemic."During lockdown and as the world moves online...women and girls are exposed to higher risks. Domestic violence is on the rise and many perpetrators also use new technologies to assert their power over the victim," Nelles saidWhile the Revenge Porn Hotline and activists like Clemot McLaren have been helping hundreds of victims, their job is becoming increasingly difficult as numbers continue to soar.The French campaigner, in particular, has said she is currently taking a step back from her work, mainly because of the impact on her mental health."I've decided to step back a little and to let other people help and investigate these accounts for me. Because on a psychological level, it's really really hard. I have had to start seeing a psychiatrist now because I've seen so much traumatizing stuff," she said. It remains unclear when Facebook offices will be fully staffed again. In an announcement in June, the company wrote: "It's become clear in recent weeks that our offices are unlikely to return to business as usual in the near future. Some of our full-time employees will continue to review sensitive content...but we will begin working with our partners to bring a small number of content reviewers back to offices to support these efforts in the coming weeks." Revenge porn victims are struggling to get Instagram to remove their images despite a rise in cases over lockdown

Apple, Amazon, Google, and hundreds of businesses vowed to meet Paris climate goals on their own 'in the absence of leadership from Washington'

Born at the same moment, the Virginia Companies of London and Plymouth would come to know radically different fates. The former struggled mightily for nearly a decade before flaming out. The Plymouth company would help make the Pilgrims' story possible. It would take a third company backed by investors with entirely different motives than the first two to make America work.

Sometimes they would form joint stock companies, which would finance expeditions to prospective lands with the hope of splitting up whatever commerce they were able to drum up on the other side of the sea.
The first two English adventurers to attempt to make it in America were Sir Walter Raleigh and his half brother Humphrey Gilbert. We can get a sense of their motivations from <a href="http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1585haies-gilbert.asp" target="_blank">the following account</a>, dated 1583 - 37 years before the pilgrims - from Captain Edward Hayes, who commanded one of Gilbert's ships back from Newfoundland, site of the first-ever English colony in America:
…although we cannot precisely judge (which only belongeth to God) what have been the humours of men stirred up to great attempts of discovering and planting in those remote countries, yet the events do shew that either God's cause hath not been chiefly preferred by them, or else God hath not permitted so abundant grace as the light of His word and knowledge of Him to be yet revealed unto those infidels before the appointed time.
Yeah. God and money don't mix so good.
<a href="http://www.constitutionalconcepts.org/raleigh.htm" target="_blank">The 1584 charter</a> granted by Queen Elizabeth to Raleigh to settle America, which Raleigh called "Virginia," further emphasizes this. It basically says: go over there and do what you want, it's all yours. There's nothing in the document about religion, or even claiming the land in the name of England (though that is implied).
You may know what happened next: Over the next three years, Raleigh financed expeditions to set up a beachhead settlement on Roanoake Island, on modern-day North Carolina's Outer Banks. But some time between 1587 and 1590, the entire colony vanished. You can read about some of the theories why <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/id/47288500/#.UpWgyWQ-uaE" target="_blank">here</a>, but it probably ended in terror: the only clues left at the site were the words "CRO" and "CROATOAN" carved into a tree and post, indicating the presence of Native Americans. This failure plays into the legend of the divine providence we now say was accorded from on high to the pilgrims.
Raleigh ended up taking a 40,000-pound loss on the enterprise, and it would be more than a decade before an Englishman got the idea to try the enterprise again.
In the meantime, the Earl of Southampton, best known as a quasi-muse of William Shakespeare, put together funds for a series of voyages that would again to tap into American natural resources. This technically violated the charter given to Raleigh, though he did not realize what had occurred <a href="http://www.americanjourneys.org/aj-039/summary/" target="_blank">until the price of London-traded sassafras suddenly dropped in the summer of 1602</a>.
The sallies had the effect of re-energizing interest in American projects, and in 1606, two groups of investors, one from London, the other from Plymouth and other parts of western England petitioned King James for charters. The King dutifully stamped out a charter granting rights to two separate colonies. You can see the text of the charter <a href="http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Charter_of_Virginia,_1606" target="_blank">here</a>. But the colonies' purpose was clear: "dig, mine, and search for all Manner of Mines of Gold, Silver, and Copper." George Cawston, an early 20th century American historian who studied the early colonies writes about Virginia's first settlers as if they were employees. "No privileges were yet granted to the settlers, who were thus left at the mercy of the Governor, himself the agent of a soulless corporation whose main object was gain."
So on May 14, 1607, England's second attempt at a full-time colony in the modern U.S. commenced when 104 men and boys landed at Jamestown, Virginia. Right away hostility from the locals and greedy settlers threatened to tank the enterprise.
But from Jamestown we get the legend of John Smith, whom historians now consider as much masterful salesman as courageous Englishman, because on his return trip to England he convinced London's financiers to keep investing in America. Thus, in 1609, the first American joint stock company was formed: The Treasurer and Company of Planters of the City of London for the First Colony in Virginia, or, simply The London Company. 
We get our next account from historian Robert Rudolph. To attract demand for the company's stock, the earliest subscribers were promised large tracts of land, and if you hazarded to "adventure your person" you'd get a 100-acre plot on the other side, guaranteed. Plus, you names would be officially added to the charter, something your descendants might appreciate.The original share price was £12.10, about £2,600 in 2013. In May 1609, an eight-ship voyage set sale for Jamestown.
But by that point, John Smith was still nursing a severe leg injury sustained when <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/john-smith.html" target="_blank">from nearly accidentally having his legs blown off</a>, and evidently no one else was up to the task of glossing over the jungle-like conditions of Virginia in the summer. So as voyages returned "laden with nothing but bad reports," interest in the America project flagged, and subscribers began defaulting. 
As a result, the company's operations in Virginia began to founder. The company tried borrowing money to stay alive as a going concern. In 1610, it got a loan for an expedition led by Lord de la Warr (Sound familiar? <a href="http://delaware.gov/" target="_blank">Say it out loud…</a>) to turn its investments around. As Governor, de la Warr proved an able leader, but he died at sea in 1618. In a last-ditch effort, company officials enticed skilled Italian and Polish workers to settle in the South, and turned to tobacco as a cash crop. It didn't work. The company failed to issue a "dividend" until 1616 - and it came in the form of land, not cash! By 1624, King James had seen enough and revoked the company's charter. The crown assumed full control of the plantations the company had established in southern Virginia.
For a successful English colony to take hold, more than greed would be required.

The rights to the Plymouth colony - the second half of the original 1607 American charter - had lain dormant since soon after they were first issued, when an attempt to settle an area near present-day Bath, Maine failed.
In 1620, having fled to the Netherlands but still in search of a new permanent home, the Pilgrims saw an opportunity. They lobbied a firm in London called the Merchant Adventurers to finance a voyage to America. The Merchant Adventurers paid the passage in exchange for a seven-year labor contract with the company, though the Pilgrims were also guaranteed some equity. (The religious tolerance demonstrated by company officials is no small matter.) <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/21/weekinreview/21zernike.html?pagewanted=all">As the New York Times' Kate Zernicke wrote last year</a>:
Historians say that the settlers in Plymouth, and their supporters in England, did indeed agree to hold their property in common - William Bradford, the governor, referred to it in his writings as the "common course." But the plan was in the interest of realizing a profit sooner, and was only intended for the short term; historians say the Pilgrims were more like shareholders in an early corporation...
"It was directed ultimately to private profit," said Richard Pickering, a historian of early America and the deputy director of <a href="http://www.plimoth.org/">Plimoth Plantation</a>, a museum devoted to keeping the Pilgrims' story alive.
The Pilgrims ended up at the point we know today as Plymouth but lacked a license to settle there. So they asked the Merchant Adventurers to sign a contract on their behalf with a man named Sir Ferdinando Gorges, who'd secured the dormant Plymouth rights and was in the process of rechartering the company under the name "The Council established at Plymouth, in the County of Devon, for the Planting, Ruling, Ordering, and Governing of New England,' to settle large swaths of land in "New Plymouth."
As Caleb Johnson, a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, <a href="http://www.histarch.illinois.edu/plymouth/piercepat.html">writes</a>:
The Mayflower Compact was a "quick fix", but even the Pilgrims knew they would need the [authority] of the English government behind them if they wanted to continue living at Plymouth. When news from Plymouth returned to England in May, 1620 along with the Mayflower, the Merchant Adventurers led by John Peirce went to the Council of New England to get the Pilgrims the rights to live and establish a government of their own at Plymouth. The result was the 1621 Pierce Patent, which in a sense supersedes the Mayflower Compact.
As at Jamestown, difficulties initially surfaced in and around Plymouth. The Council got a bit overzealous in issuing commercial charters to individual English merchants, and Bradford would go on to complain of lazy and incompetent settler neighbors. You can see the outlays of the land grants, and how the pilgrims basically subleased Gorges' territory (they're not formally listed anywhere).

Some of these men got into the habit of swindling American Indians. This, in turn, led the Indians to deem all settlers enemies, and the resulting ill will never really dissipated. These merchants also sought to hedge the small margins they were realizing by drastically overcharging the pilgrims for the basic goods they needed.
"But by thrift and industry," George Cawston writes, the pilgrims triumphed. By 1627, they'd accumulated enough wealth that a group led by Myles Standish could buy out the Merchants' stake in Plymouth. The Pilgrims formed a government and until 1640 elected their own governor.
So the Pilgrims were more successful than the Jamestowners, and that's why we know them today. However, never numbering more than several hundred - and eschewing any form of financial enterprise - they ultimately lacked the means of getting America itself off the ground.
That distinction would fall to the Massachusetts Bay Company, established in 1627 by a group of wealthy investors from western England known as Puritans. Their religious views were not quite as radical as the austere Pilgrims', but a crackdown on non-conformists in England shifted the organization's focus from profit-seeking to something else, <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=amFQ3gq-SjQC&amp;pg=PA150&amp;lpg=PA150&amp;dq=massachusetts+bay+company+craddock&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=LckIWyNm0D&amp;sig=B9moPDvsHocEF-gUW3oea_sN8qQ&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=fG6XUqXqH8ffoATnwIHACw&amp;ved=0CDwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=massachusetts%20bay%20company%20craddock&amp;f=false">according to Robert Brennan</a>:
"The political crisis of the later 1620s and the sudden determination of large numbers of Puritans to leave England forced the company to concentrate almost totally on the foundation of a haven for victims of religio-political persecution."
The combination the wealth of the companies' backers, along with a more sustained wave of settlers fleeing intolerance, allowed the Massachusetts Bay Company's to become England's first large-scale successful American colony. Eventually they absorbed Plymouth colony. We know the rest of the story from there.
One final note: although the Massachusetts Bay Company became successful, it was not America's most successful company. That distinction belonged to the Dutch West India Company, a nationalized corporation set up by the Netherlands government, which between 1624 and 1664 set up a thriving trading hub at the mouth of the Hudson called New Amsterdam ...
