How to delete your personal information from Facebook, Amazon, Google, and other major websites and apps

<keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword> (formerly Facebook) is ending an exception to its existing rules that allowed users to post private residential information of people on its platforms if it was "publicly available" elsewhere. Reacting to a decision by Facebook Oversight Board, Meta agreed to remove the exception from its policy. "As the board notes in this recommendation, removing the exception for 'publicly available' private residential information may limit the availability of this information on Facebook and Instagram when it is still publicly available elsewhere," the company said. "However, we recognise that implementing this recommendation can strengthen privacy protections on our platforms," it added. The policy change would be implemented "by the end of the year". Additionally, Meta is changing its response to posts that include photos of the outside of private homes. The social network said it will not take action if "the property depicted is the focus of a news story unless it's shared in the context of organising protests against the resident". "Access to residential addresses can be an important tool for journalism, civic activism, and other public discourse. However, exposing this information without consent can also create a risk to an individual's safety and infringe on privacy," Meta said in an update. The planned policy changes by Meta should help victims of 'doxxing' which is the act of revealing a person's personal information online with an aim to harass him or her. The social media giant had asked the Oversight Board to help shape its rules in June last year, saying the policy was "significant and difficult". The board followed up with 17 recommendations for the company in February, which Meta has now weighed in on, reports Engadget. Meta will stop users from sharing private residential information on its platform

Recently, the world’s largest information company <keyword id="93636" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google-Inc">Google Inc</keyword> has started a campaign for its search business in India and Pakistan, which narrates an emotional reunion story of two ageing friends who were separated by the 1947 Partition of the sub-continent. But this has raised some vexed questions within the Indian business community. Why has Google, which literally monopolises the search business of the two neighbouring nations, taken up such a campaign to promote its business? Most of these observations are, however, made to highlight the ‘feel good’ business practices followed by Google. 
 
But I would take this context to explore the new dimensions of the business strategies, which are commonly practised by multi-national information companies in emerging economies, within the contours of new-generation information business. 
 According to Alexa.com, a Web traffic tracking company, the top 5 websites visited in India belong to American multinational corporations including Google, <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="6363100" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Yahoo">Yahoo</keyword>. All these companies are NASDAQ-listed and rated as blue chip stocks. 
 For the analytical purpose, I classify this type of companies under the business category User Generated Content (UGC). It is because these information-based companies fundamentally depend on the content generated in the public domain. In other words, new-generation information-based companies don’t have their own internal mechanism and resources to produce information. They provide only a technology platform to aggregate and disseminate information generated by the <keyword id="207034" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="general-public">general public</keyword>, business entities, and other public and private institutions, using their own economic resources. 
 For instance, let us analyse one of the wealthiest companies – Google. Google provides an online platform to find a particular piece of information that has been generated by third party content generators. Google neither produces nor sells its own information. So functionally, this firm does not offer any product or service apart from its search algorithm. That means Google functions as an <keyword id="1981580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="information-agency-broker">information agency broker</keyword> to link information seekers and information producers. The same principle is applicable to all its subsidiary initiatives such as <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, Google Images, Google News, Google Books, etc. World’s most popular social networking sites Facebook and Twitter also work on similar lines, but their content aggregation methods are different. Search engines aggregate and index information robotically, but social media companies get the information directly from their users without any technological complexity. Therefore, technology intensity in social networking sites is less or meagre, compared to search engines like Google. 
 Information generation is a knowledge-intensive and cost intensive process. In the so-called information-based <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, major costs are incurred at the time of content generation. These include cost factors involving time, labour, learning, etc. The participation cost (transaction cost) for users to take part in this sector is high, especially in the developing nations. The leading UGC-based companies like Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Twitter generate huge profits in the short run because they are not involved in content production and get it freely from users. 
 
From an economic point of view, the stock value of UGC-based companies would be determined by their user base and the volume of UGC. As these two are highly correlated, a cut in user base and UGC may drastically affect the stock prices of these companies. To avoid such negative impact in the market, various ‘happenings’ for UGC production are extremely important. In short, ‘events’ that lead to mass content generation would play a key role in UGC-based companies to increase the value of their stocks. Developing countries like India are none too bothered about the implicit transaction cost and are more interested in engagements of public discourse. That may be the reason why UGC-based companies aggressively focus on socially dynamic nations for their business, within the ‘feel good’ framework of freedom of expression. 
 Now, let us put this issue within the purview of <keyword id="35028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="international-trade">international trade</keyword> and its economic impact in developing nations. World’s leading UGC-based companies are headquartered in the US and their central data servers are also located there. UGC is the major raw material for UGC-focused firms and the globally generated content would be stored in their central data servers. In fact, the technological advancement-led trade enables UGC-based companies to access their production input (UGC as raw material) across national boundaries without any trade barrier. Furthermore, they can sell their advertisement inventory globally without any trade restriction. Its economic impact on developing nations is significant in the modern trade regime, especially in the wake of WTO’s Trade-in-Service Agreement. 
 
The transaction cost for participating in Internet activities is high in countries like India which are technologically less developed. For example, Facebook has globally generated 18.4 billion visits in October 2013 (source: Alexa.com; Similiarwebs.com). Out of these, 1.4 billion (7.8%) visits were from India. In our estimation, the average bandwidth spend is 3 MB per user for a single Facebook visit. In India, the average cost for 1 MB bandwidth would be around $0.06. Based on this data, estimates show that approximately $252 million have been spent by Indians in October 2013 to access the Internet for visiting Facebook. If we add other cost parameters like time, infrastructure, transportation, etc., it would come to around $500 million. Out of this, we could forecast that Indians would be spending about $6 billion per annum for accessing Facebook. 
 
Next we look at the earning side of the business. According to Facebook’s official data announced in 2011, it annually generates an average $2 per user from Asian nations, and $10 from the US and Canada. Since 2011, Facebook has been experiencing tremendous growth in Asian nations, especially in India. According to market estimates, it may earn around $5 per user in India per annum. Currently, Facebook has around 82 million active users in India. Using this statistics, I estimate that Facebook may earn around $410 million per annum from India. 
 
In short, Facebook, a social networking company headquartered in the US with 4,619 staff members and revenues of $5 billion (in 2012) globally, makes a total economic activity of $6 billion per annum in India. If we apply the same estimates for the remaining top 4 UGC-based companies (perhaps, the actual estimation would be higher than Facebook due to more multimedia content), it would be approximately $24 billion. 
 
In trade terms, the top 5 UGC-based MNCs generate around $2 billion per annum from the Indian user base without any trade rule of negotiations. It comes to around 29% of India’s Electronic goods (hardware and software) exports. If we include the remaining popular UGC-based websites in India like Twitter, LinkedIn, MSN, Dailymotion, etc., the economic pie would grow even bigger. 
 
Based on the above minimalist estimations, we can understand that the new-generation UGC-based companies make a significant impact on developing nations’ economy, and it is sure to grow in leaps and bounds in the future if it keeps its present growth momentum. Therefore, economically vibrant nations like India should frame its internal and external policies for this segment and all emerging nations should think about how it can be incorporated within the trade framework of WTO to get some benefits out of it.

In what he terms the "evolution of an information society," the amount of hard drive space people require to store their digital lives is growing at quite a click.
In 1986, the average person had just 500 megabytes to his or her name.
By 2007, this number ballooned to 44.5 gigabytes, an 8,800% increase over 21 years.
For an individual's purposes, 44.5 GB isn't considered an especially large amount of data today. But consider this – cloud services are quickly becoming a primary means for people to store their data on a single server. If you're a large company like Google, managing 44.5 GB of data per person becomes a tricky task when you have a few hundred million customers.
Here's where the quantum side of things comes in.

New Delhi, A bug during a <keyword id="8601386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-test">Facebook test</keyword> recently exposed the <keyword id="74417" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-information">personal information</keyword> like email addresses and birthdays of <keyword id="1487422" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram-users">Instagram users</keyword>, the media reported. Saugat Pokharel, an experienced bug hunter from Nepal, discovered the bug. The attack used <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword>'s Business Suite tool, available to any Facebook business account, reports The Verge. Pokharel found that the attack worked on accounts that were set to <keyword id="6356430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="private">private</keyword> and accounts that were set to not accept DMs from the public. "If an account did not accept DMs, the user potentially would not receive any notification indicating their profile may have been viewed," the report said on Friday. Facebook patched the vulnerability after being reported. According to a Facebook spokesperson, the bug was only accessible for a short period of time during a small test. "A researcher reported an issue where, if someone was a part of a small test we ran in October for business accounts, personal information of the person they were messaging could have been revealed," the company spokesperson was quoted as saying. "This issue was resolved quickly, and we discovered no evidence of abuse. Through our Bug Bounty Program we rewarded this researcher for his help in reporting this issue to us". Pokharel earlier found another bug in <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> and awarded a $6,000 bug bounty payout. He found that Instagram retained photos and private direct messages on its servers long after he deleted them. The company fixed the bug and allowed Pokharel to disclose the bug issue. Facebook fixes bug that exposed Instagram users' personal information

After staying dormant for a while, it seems like Emotet has made its way back again with its new variant that targets Google Chrome users by stealing their card information. Emotet peeks into your system and tries to steal card information like name, expiry date and card numbers from Google Chrome profiles. It collects information and then transfers it to the command-and-control (C2) server. Also, it has the ability to hide from anti-virus software. This new Google Chrome malware can steal your credit and debit card information

<ul><li>There has been an increase in <keyword id="43991" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="financial-fraud" source="Orion">financial fraud</keyword> amid an increase in financial transactions.</li><li>People are storing important financial information on their smartphones without any security.</li><li>88% of the people surveyed have submitted their Aadhaar as proof for applications and bookings.</li></ul> The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that 5,406 instances of financial fraud were reported during April-September 2022, up from 4,069 reports during the same period in 2021. According to the central bank, the modus operandi for fraud has shifted to card and internet-based transactions. According to a survey conducted by LocalCircles, people are still storing important financial information such as internet banking passwords, and debit and credit card PINs on their smartphones. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="17% of people store financial information on their smartphone" comment="subhead" text="17% of people store financial information on their smartphone">17% of people store financial information on their smartphone</cmsannotation> Out of over 32,000 people surveyed, 9% admitted to storing important financial information on their phone’s contact list, and 8% admitted using the notes app on their smartphone. A similar survey in 2021 revealed that 11% of people were storing important financial data on their phones, meaning there has been an increase in this number, despite attempts by the central bank to raise awareness among the people. 18% of the people revealed that they store financial information on their computers and laptops. Despite a rise in financial frauds, 17% of people store financial information on their smartphones

At least 12 confidential FBI informants assisted the investigation into the extremist group accused of conspiring to kidnap the Democratic governor, according to the news outlet's report. An examination of the case by BuzzFeed revealed that "some of those informants, acting under the direction of the FBI, played a far larger role than has previously been reported."For example, an Iraq war veteran informant "became so deeply enmeshed in a Michigan militant group" that he rose to second-in-command of the group, BuzzFeed reported. The war vet told members of the group to convene with other potential suspects and even paid for members' transportation to meetings, according to the news outlet. Another man who advised the militia group on where to place explosives and offered to get as many as needed was also an informant, BuzzFeed reported. In total, 14 men were charged last year in the alleged domestic terrorism plot to kidnap Whitmer. The defendants have all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Peter Thiel has worn many hats over the years: Silicon Valley founder, Trump megadonor, cryptocurrency booster, democracy skeptic.But there is yet another facet to Thiel, one that has remained secret until now: FBI informant.In the summer of 2021, Insider has learned, Thiel began providing information as a "confidential human source," or CHS, to Johnathan Buma, a Los Angeles-based FBI agent who specializes in investigating political corruption and foreign-influence campaigns. Charles Johnson, a longtime associate of Thiel's and a notorious figure in the far-right movement that Thiel has subsidized for a decade, told Insider in a statement that he helped recruit the billionaire as an informant by introducing him to Buma.A source with knowledge of Thiel's relationship to the FBI, whose identity is known to Insider but who insisted on anonymity, corroborated Johnson's account, telling Insider that Johnson brokered a relationship between Thiel and Buma. Insider was able to confirm through an additional source that the FBI added Thiel to its formal roster of registered informants.Another source close to Thiel told Insider that while they could not confirm that Thiel was a CHS, Thiel did speak to Buma occasionally. The source said that any assistance Thiel might have provided to the FBI should be understood as part of Thiel's gradual distancing of himself from Trump and the broader MAGA movement, which has vigorously criticized the FBI and other federal law-enforcement agencies.<h2>Valuable information on a recurring basis</h2>The FBI maintains a vast network of informants to keep tabs on organized crime, terrorist threats, extremist groups, and other criminal and intelligence targets. These sources, according to the bureau's <a href="https://vault.fbi.gov/confidential-human-source-policy-guide-1018pg/confidential-human-source-policy-guide-1018pg-part-01-of-01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Confidential Human Source Policy Guide</a>, are more than casual tipsters. Confidential human sources enter "into a relationship with the FBI, and that relationship will forever affect the life of that individual," the guide says. "[They] will be either an 'FBI source' or a 'former FBI source' and, in turn, his or her conduct or misconduct will reflect upon the FBI." As such, the process for recruiting and maintaining such sources is highly regulated, requiring multiple layers of approval. Only people who are able to provide "valuable information … on a recurring basis" are granted CHS status, according to the policy.<div type="image" title="Mike Pence, Donald Trump, Peter Thiel" height="618" width="824" msid="104557326" hostid="261" sizebytes="61874"></div>As a CHS, Thiel was assigned a code name and an internal serial number to track his reporting. The information he passed on about foreign contacts and Silicon Valley intrigue was reviewed and "validated," or cross-checked against other sources, by his case agents and their colleagues.Thiel did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A Thiel spokesperson stopped responding to inquiries after being told that Insider was reporting on Thiel's relationship with the FBI. The FBI's national press office and Scott Horton, an attorney who represents Johnathan Buma, both declined to comment.<h2>No reporting on political ties</h2>Thiel is a citizen of Germany, the United States, and New Zealand; as of last year, he was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/15/technology/peter-thiel-malta-citizenship.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly in the process</a> of acquiring yet another passport, from Malta. In 2016, he donated $1.25 million to Trump's campaign and endorsed him from the stage at the Republican National Convention. After Trump won, Thiel served on his transition team.Johnson, who said that he was also an informant for Buma, told Insider that he believes that Thiel's reporting to the FBI was largely limited to foreign contacts and attempts by foreign governments to penetrate Silicon Valley. Thiel has <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/15/peter-thiel-reportedly-says-the-fbi-and-cia-should-investigate-google.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">publicly called on the FBI to investigate Google's ties to the Chinese government</a>.Thiel, Johnson said, was directed by the FBI not to report on his interactions with Donald Trump or other US political figures.Many of the politicians that Thiel has bankrolled — including Trump, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, and Blake Masters, a former Arizona senatorial candidate — have repeatedly attacked the bureau and its leadership in public. In 2022, Vance, whose campaign and affiliated PACs received a total of $15 million from Thiel, falsely claimed that the FBI had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-falsely-claims-fbi-illegally-wiretapped-trump-ohio-rally-2022-4">illegally wiretapped Trump's phone</a>. Vance accused the bureau of "<a href="https://twitter.com/JDVance1/status/1624079332711825409" target="_blank" rel="noopener">harassing faithful Christians</a>" and pledged to block all of President Joe Biden's Department of Justice nominees in retaliation for the Trump prosecutions. (As with Vance, most but not all of Thiel's donations to Masters occurred before Masters made his most inflammatory and baseless statements during the later stages of his campaign.)Thiel is<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/peter-thiel-republican-megadonor-wont-fund-candidates-2024-sources-2023-04-26/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> reportedly planning</a> to sit on the sidelines of the 2024 election.Neither Trump, Masters, nor Vance responded to requests for comment.<h2>Doing business with the FBI</h2>Some of Thiel's business interests rely on the FBI and other government agencies as potential revenue sources. He retains a 10% stake in Palantir, a data company that has sold more than a billion dollars of software and related services to the federal government, including the Pentagon, the CIA, the National Security Agency, and the FBI. A $250 million contract with the US Army in September adds to the evidence that Palantir is essentially "a government service provider," a financial analyst <a href="https://www.investors.com/news/technology/pltr-stock-palantir-wins-250-million-army-ai-services-contract/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. Thiel<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2022/02/01/billionaire-facebook-investor-peter-thiel-secretly-funded-a-cyber-warfare-startup-that-hacked-whatsapp/?utm_source=reddit&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=forbes&amp;sh=7e49fa2d5600" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> also backed</a> Boldend, a spyware company marketing itself as an American competitor to the Israeli NSO Group, Forbes reported last year. NSO's products have been<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/28/world/middleeast/israel-pegasus-spyware.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> bought and tested</a> by the FBI. (Mithril Capital, another entity Thiel cofounded, was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel-mithril-capital-fbi-investigation-venture-capital-financial-misconduct-2019-9">reportedly a subject of FBI interest in 2019</a>, although nothing appears to have come of the inquiry. Mithril's co-founder did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FBI did not respond to a question regarding the Mithril matter.)Johnson, who revealed Thiel's FBI ties, is a tech investor and far-right agitator with long-standing ties to both Thiel and to the network of MAGA political operators surrounding Trump. He claims to have had a hand in founding Clearview, a facial-recognition startup, and Traitwell, a genomics company. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattdrange/2017/01/09/chuck-johnson-troll-trump-transition-team/?sh=5474e3a0265e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to Forbes</a>, he worked with Thiel to help vet and select senior staffers for the Trump transition in 2017.Johnson claimed to be an FBI informant in <a href="https://dockets.justia.com/docket/new-york/nysdce/1:2023cv02441/596057" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a lawsuit</a> he filed against Clearview's founders. But he is also a self-identified "troll" with a history of spreading false information and smearing his rivals. In this instance, his claims are corroborated by two additional sources, as well as supported in part by a third who says Thiel and Buma spoke occasionally.<h2>'Join up or get crushed'</h2>Buma came forward in August as a whistleblower, alleging that the FBI under Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-didnt-care-giuliani-compromised-by-kremlin-whistleblower-buma-2023-9">shut down his efforts</a> to determine whether Rudy Giuliani had been compromised by a Russian asset. Insider was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-whistleblower-senate-judiciary-russia-giuliani-leak-trump-allies-fuks-biden-2023-8">the first news organization to report on his claims</a>.In a statement prepared for the Senate Judiciary Committee, Buma said that FBI headquarters had closed his most valuable human sources, including one code-named "Genius," who had reported on far-right figures involved with planning the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Johnson told Insider that "Genius" was his CHS code name. Insider was able to confirm Johnson's identity as "Genius" with two additional sources. Johnson said that he was exposing Thiel's work as a CHS as retribution for what Johnson perceives to be bad decision-making by the Founders Fund, Thiel's venture-capital firm.Johnson also told Insider he felt betrayed that Thiel did not invest in Johnson's own startups, which he had expected Thiel to do in exchange for introducing him to Buma. Johnson said that he told Thiel that by offering the FBI a window into his contacts with foreign governments, he could demonstrate his loyalty to the United States. He described Thiel's motivation for working with Buma as a kind of hedge in an environment where extravagant wealth no longer affords the safety it used to. He pointed to <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/lord-of-the-roths-how-tech-mogul-peter-thiel-turned-a-retirement-account-for-the-middle-class-into-a-5-billion-dollar-tax-free-piggy-bank" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ProPublica's reporting on Thiel's income-tax avoidance</a> and the death of Jeffrey Epstein, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/18/business/jeffrey-epstein-peter-thiel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who had reportedly scheduled several meetings</a> with Thiel."I told him to join up or get crushed," Johnson said. The FBI's recruitment of Thiel as a CHS puts him among the bureau's most prominent assets, but he is not alone among right-wing figures who have collaborated with the bureau. Trump himself <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-flipping-history-cooperating-fbi-2018-8">offered to help</a> the FBI fight organized crime in Atlantic City in the early 1980s. Truth Social, the Trump-owned social-media company, has <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/10/trumps-truth-social-tipped-fbi-to-man-killed-during-arrest-attempt-for-biden-threats.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">quietly tipped the FBI off</a> to users who threaten violence, even as it seeks to cash in on their anger. At least two of the rioters who showed up to storm the Capitol on January 6 were also FBI informants, as was Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys leader who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other felonies stemming from the Capitol breach.
