UGC rolls out academic plan for the year — 2 hour exams, 6-day weeks and promotions based on internal assessment

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Edu-tech platform Doubtnut on Friday said it has raised USD 15 million (about Rs 107 crore) in a funding round led by Tencent.
 The series A round also saw participation from existing investors, Omidyar Network India, AET, Japan and Ankit Nagori (former Flipkart executive) along with Sequoia Capital India, a statement said.
 Doubtnut, which has over 1.2 million daily users, had raised pre-series A funding in March last year led by Surge (Sequoia Capital India's programme), Waterbridge Ventures, Omidyar Network India and AET, Japan, it added.
 "Doubtnut will use the funds to widen its pan-India distribution, build on its content repository to cater to a fast expanding target group, invest in strengthening its technology stack and scaling its team," it said.
 Set up in October 2017 by Tanushree Nagori and Aditya Shankar, Doubtnut currently caters to K-12, IIT JEE and NEET students. It offers a multi-lingual online learning platform that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, and provides video-based solutions in response to students' queries.
 Students have to send a photograph of the question they want to solve, and Doubtnut app provides a video of the solution while simultaneously suggesting other concept videos to help students learn the topic better. The app can read questions in 11 Indian languages.
 The company has over 13 million monthly active users across several platforms (web, app, Youtube and Whatsapp). It said it has witnessed 30X growth in its daily active users since March 2019.
 "...despite a massive growth in our user base, there is still a significant target audience that is yet to be tapped. While the JEE ranks second in the world with respect to its toughness, no other examination has been in the news as much as the NEET. In fact, the NEET was discontinued altogether back in 2013 before making a comeback three years later. In turn, the financial burden of pursuing <keyword id="3113818" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering-in-India">engineering in India</keyword> is becoming an increasingly big issue for many aspirants as these coaching centres charge a bomb for their classes. A study by ASSOCHAM reveals that 70% of the parents, right from high-income families to the bottom stratum of the social hierarchy, are in the favor of spending hefty sums at these coaching institutes in the name of education. Reports <a href="https://ideasmakemarket.com/2013/09/aug-entry16-analysis-of-private-coaching-industry-in-india.html">indicate</a> that middle-class parents shell-out nearly one-third of their income so that their children can attend these private tuitions. But despite these private tuitions flourishing across the country, the reality of the situation remains unaltered. An exam like the JEE can only be cleared by 5,500 and more than 300,000 students appear for the exam. It’s that extreme level of competition that has led to the coaching industry showing a consistent growth of 35% over the past six years. And, that is exactly why free coaching for students will deal a big blow to the industry. That being said, the notion that private education is superior to public education still prevails in India. There might not be an actual loss for the coaching institution since the coaching centers don't cater to students who can’t afford tuition anyway. According to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the aim is to empower candidates from rural and semi-urban centres. While the NEET is the national level entrance exam to gain admission into any graduate medical course in a government or a private medical college, the JEE is an all-India exam for admission into India’s leading engineering colleges like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Winslow was able to leave Lousiana State Penitentiary in Angola when he was resentenced last week to 12 years with time served last week with the aid of Jee Park, Winslow's attorney and executive director at <a href="https://ip-no.org/">Innocence Project New Orleans (IPNO)</a> - an organization that helps and represents people serving life sentences in Louisiana and south Mississippi for free. Park told Insider Winslow received a harsh sentence because of the state's habitual offender law, where an individual <a href="https://www.nola.com/article_5a580ecd-23a2-508e-b978-2b0bcbf543d3.html">could be given an excessive sentence for having multiple past convictions even for a minor offense.</a> In Winslow's case, he had 3 prior convictions, which all were non-violent. The first offense was a burglary when he was 17, then a car burglary 10 years later, and possession of cocaine in 2004."Those are the three convictions they used to treat Fate as a fourth-time habitual offender for the marijuana conviction. And because of his prior felony convictions, he faced a mandatory sentence of life in <keyword id="6362397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="prison">prison</keyword>," Park said. <div type="image" title="Fate winslow 1" height="843" width="1124" msid="79971301" hostid="261"></div>Park was able to file<a href="https://definitions.uslegal.com/p/post-conviction-relief/"> a Post-Conviction Relief</a> application and present it to the district attorney's office stating that Winslow received ineffective assistance of counsel during his initial trial. As a result of Park's fight, Winslow was then granted a resentence which was time served. IPNO has helped exonerate 36 men and women who served 873 in prison combined since the organization's genesis in 2001, Park said. This year, the organization expanded its efforts by launching the Unjust Punishment Project that evaluates cases of prisoners who were given excessive sentences for non-violent drug crimes. So far, the organization has been able to free three men, including Winslow, under this new program. "When I met to meet Fate at Angola he kind of captured our hearts. He's like the most lovely, gentle, hopeful man you would ever meet," Park said. " So, getting to know him and getting to know his case, we knew we had to do something for him. We started working on his case in earnest in early 2019 and it took almost two years for us to get him released."Winslow emphasized that he didn't "have a chance" without the assistance of Park and the IPNO. <div type="image" title="fate and jee" height="2274" width="3024" msid="79971302" hostid="261"></div>Winslow plans to get a job in landscaping and a place to stay to start to rebuild his life. Their numbers doubled in the last three years. This new scheme will apply to all international students having UK immigration status, who have completed an undergraduate or higher educational degree from any UK university. “The new graduate route will mean talented international students, whether in science and maths or technology and engineering, can study in the UK and then gain valuable work experience as they go on to build successful careers,” said Home Secretary Priti Patel. This will allow students to gain more industry-relevant skills and experience in their chosen field of education. The UK has already fast-tracked visas for research scholars. It aims to boost STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sector in the country. In fact, almost half of all Indian students in the UK over the last decade chose a STEM subject as their field of study. According to the British High Commission, 96% of Indians willing to go to the UK, have received UK visas. “This will help ensure that the UK remains one of the best destinations for students across the world. Overall, nearly 22,000 Indians received student visas for the year ending June 2019, which is 15,000 more than last year. The investment, which will go towards bringing on board more educators and better the product, also saw the founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini participate in the round. “In the last few months, we have taken bigger strides toward achieving this mission. We have more than 400 top educators from across the country taking live classes every day on Unacademy Plus. This is available to every student, irrespective of their location,” said Munjal. Unacademy plus is the startup’s subscription plan which has more than 50,000 learners. The startup, which was founded in 2015, has over 13 million learners. “We are seeing unprecedented growth and engagement from learners in smaller towns and cities, and are also very humbled to see that top-quality educators are choosing Unacademy as their primary platform to reach out to students,” said Munjal. This also shows the growth trajectory of Indian online education space. Online education industry in India is expected to hit 9.6 million by 2021 user base, which was 1.6 million in 2016, as per a KPMG report. In fact, a survey by education startup GradeUp also shows that students are counting on online teaching for competitive exams — JEE, NEET, GATE, SSC and banking exams. Meanwhile, the big player in Indian <keyword id="1974983" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edutech">edutech</keyword> space remains Byju’s – which had recently reported profitability with an increase in the number of paid users. Its revenue has tripled to reach ₹14.3 billion in the financial year ending March 2019, though it has not shared the net profit numbers. It's called <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/puzzles/tiles">Tiles</a>.&#xa0;Tiles is a color and pattern matching game with tilesets - grids of patterned squares - that challenges players to select the longest possible sequence of tile pairs with shared elements, like this:&#xa0;The game has different tilesets named after cities across the world. The "Kuala Lumpur" tileset pattern in pink and green is&#xa0;inspired by Peranakan tiles found in Malaysia and Singapore. "Lisbon" is a tessellation-like tileset of yellow and blue based on Parisian and Portuguese tiles. "New Haven," a color-block tileset, is based on the artwork of Josef Albers, a painter and color-theorist who taught at Yale. "Austin" in brown and mauve is inspired by 70s interior design and Op artist Bridget Riley.
