<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="153271" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Time-magazine">Time magazine</keyword> released its first-ever NFT cover on Monday.</li><li>The publication will sell three <keyword id="902592" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFTS">NFTs</keyword> in a digital auction on the website SuperRare.</li><li>Time also announced it will begin accepting digital currencies within 30 days.</li></ul><p>Time magazine announced on Monday that it plans on getting into the crypto market.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/KeithGrossman/status/1374013984546942976">a Tweet from Time's President Keith Grossman</a>, the magazine and news website will begin accepting <keyword id="2420795" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cryptocurrencies">cryptocurrencies</keyword> as a form of payment for digital subscriptions within the next thirty days.</p><p>The company will also be selling three of its magazine covers as non-fungible tokens, according to <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/time-keith-grossman-outlines-nft-and-crypto-future-for-magazine-company-143938668.html">a report from Yahoo Finance.</a></p><p>Time released its first-ever NFT cover on Monday featuring the words "Is Fiat Dead?" in a nod to iconic cover designs from the past. The company is <a href="https://superrare.co/artwork-v2/time-is-fiat-dead-21652">auctioning the NFT</a> and two others on SuperRare, a digital artworks marketplace.</p><p>The move by time to enter the NFT and market comes amid a boom for the digital collectibles industry.</p><p>After <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beeple-nft-mike-winkelmann-digital-art-christies-2021-3">Beeple's $69 million sale</a> of "Everydays: The First 5000 Days" NFTs have become the talk of the town. Google searches for "NFT" hit a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/nft-google-search-digital-collectible-platform-count-all-time-high-2021-3-1030232759">record high</a> over the weekend, and even musicians like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-nft-list-top-selling-nfts-crypto-art-sales-2021-3">Steve Aoki</a> are entering the market selling millions worth in digital art/collectibles.</p><p>Time President <keyword id="10975536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="keith-grossman">Keith Grossman</keyword> told Yahoo Finance's Julia La Roche that he believes other media companies will be "very hesitant" to jump into digital currencies "beyond collectibles."</p><p>Grossman said that his company is "very comfortable seeing the trend lines as to where this is going. And so our goal is is to get there first to get there fast. And then to be able to open it up to others." </p><p><keyword id="6354947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bitcoin">Bitcoin</keyword>'s rise to over $60,000 per coin, before a recent pullback, has brought new attention to the digital currency market. Over the past year alone bitcoin has seen its price jump roughly 800%. And <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-could-plunge-after-another-surge-crypto-entrepreneur-says-btc-2021-3">despite warnings</a> from economists, investors, professors, and more, the digital currency continues its historic rise.  </p><p>Now that institutional investors like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teslas-positioned-to-become-the-worlds-major-bitcoin-bank-2021-2">Tesla</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/square-doubles-down-on-crypto-eyes-further-bitcoin-expansion-2021-2">Square</a> have entered the fray, major companies are far more comfortable making announcements about digital assets.</p><p>Time isn't the only company that has begun accepting digital currencies. From <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mastercard-allow-cryptocurrencies-use-payments-network-2021-2">Mastercard</a> to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/bitcoin-dogecoin-btc-payment-cryptocurrency-news-hotel-chain-kessler-2021-3-1030174638">luxury hotel chains</a>, a slew of new businesses have decided to allow customers to pay with digital currency. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An <keyword id="11919795" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nft" source="Orion">NFT</keyword> launch organized by <keyword id="12103403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="time-magazine" source="Orion">Time Magazine</keyword> fell apart on Thursday as scalper bots snatched up the collectibles.</li><li>Hours after the full supply was bought up, the lowest available price on the secondary market was around $9,500, a 30-times markup from the original price.</li><li>The massive sale also gunked up the overall <keyword id="11892696" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ethereum" source="Orion">ethereum</keyword> network, sending "gas" fees soaring up to six times compared to Thursday morning levels.</li></ul><p>An NFT launch organized by Time Magazine fell apart on Thursday as scalper bots snatched up the collectibles and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/eth-usd">ethereum</a> fees soared for the whole network, according to a <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/09/23/chaotic-time-magazine-nft-launch-sends-gas-fees-spiraling/">CoinDesk</a> report.</p><p>The 4,676 NFTs, called "TimePieces," were each tied to a unique piece of digital art and came with subscription access to Time Magazine's website. Each TimePiece would be sold at around $310 in ether on a first-come-first-serve basis, but buyers were limited to 10 NFTs - in an attempt to stop bots from mass buying.</p><p>Yet that is exactly what happened. All NFTs were purchased in minutes as unlucky prospective buyers took to Twitter to complain about scalper bots. Hours after the full supply was bought up, the lowest available price on the secondary market was around $9,500, a 30-times markup from the original price, according to CoinDesk.</p><p>Because the ethereum blockchain lets bidders pay extra fees to cut in line, nearly all successful buyers in the minutes-long sale period paid huge fees, often well in excess of the original $310 price. One high-roller <a href="https://etherscan.io/tx/0x0942e29f35eddda383b752eeb94aeec6bfd145d1664182b845e2d367289b201b">bought</a> 10 TimePieces for around $3,000 - but paid over $60,000 in transaction and line-cutting fees.</p><p>The massive sale also gunked up the overall ethereum network, sending "gas" fees soaring up to <a href="https://ethereumprice.org/gas/">six times</a> compared to Thursday morning levels. Fees remained elevated for about an hour before falling as the bottleneck cleared.</p><p>In an interview with CoinDesk, Time president Keith Grossman - a crypto-curious exec who previously partnered with Grayscale for his magazine to invest in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/btc-usd">bitcoin</a> - said that the episode was a big learning experience.</p><p>"We're going to make sure that the next time that we do this, everything that we have seen that went wrong or that didn't go as we planned, is fixed," said Grossman.</p><p>In August, <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">Markets</keyword> Insider created <a href="https://opensea.io/bundles/market-insider-amc-stock-c0F">three NFTs of articles from iconic moments</a> during this year's meme-stock explosion.</p>

Rodriguez/Getty Images for J/P HRO</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Execs at Marc Benioff's Time magazine revealed their strategy for the iconic title.</li><li>Time's president said Time would be profitable as early as this year and ultimately be a billion-dollar business.</li><li>Its CEO plans to expand the title to verticals like health and business and is even eyeing acquisitions.</li><li>They also plan to drum up revenue from audio, video, and overseas.</li><li>But Time has to convince younger generations and advertisers that the brand is still relevant after years of neglect by its past owners.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime">Click here for more BI Prime articles.</a></li></ul><p>It's a scary time for old media - unless you're fortunate enough to be owned by billionaires.</p><p>A year since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/time-magazine-marc-benioff-salesforce-190-million-2018-9">Salesforce founder Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne bought Time</a>, a plan to turn around the iconic news magazine is taking shape.</p><p>Like much of print media, Time has struggled to adapt its business as print ad dollars have moved online, mostly to the big tech giants Google and Facebook. Time has also endured years of business-side neglect under public companies Time Warner and then Meredith.</p><p>To revamp the business, the Benioffs tapped Keith Grossman, former CRO of Bloomberg Media, as Time's president. In a wide-ranging conversation with Business Insider, he and CEO/editor in chief Edward Felsenthal laid out their plans to turn Time around.</p><p>Grossman called 2019 an investment year - Time had to rebuild the infrastructure it lost and make new hires when it became independent. It's hired more than 100 people since the sale, for a total of 267 (part and full-time.) He said he planned to make it profitable as early as 2020 and turn it into "an excellent business" over time.</p><p>"We all want to grow this to a billion-dollar organization," Grossman said. "Right now, it's a $200 million organization. It could take seven to eight years. It's not an overnight thing."</p><h2>Time sees opportunity to play a bigger role</h2><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e15ec9db2e66a025704a7d2-1084/screen shot 2020-01-08 at 95120 am.png" alt="Edward Felsenthal" /><p class="source"><span>Time</span></p><p class="caption">Edward Felsenthal</p><p>Felsenthal said now that Time is no longer limited by corporate earnings pressure and internal competition that it faced under previous owners, it would expand in verticals where it has authority, like health, business, and education. Health is the most visible example so far; last fall Time expanded its Time 100 concept to a health summit, and plans to out out a digital health product in the fourth quarter.</p><p>"We have 90 years of authority and can go deep in bringing people together for positive change," he said. "Health is the clearest example. Time can go anywhere."</p><p>Time is also looking to expand its role in history and education. On Feb. 26, it's kicking off a traveling exhibit called <a href="https://time.com/longform/about-the-march/">The March</a> commemorating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and the civil rights march on Washington. Visitors will be able to wear VR viewers that will make them feel like they're part of the march itself. Revenue will come from sponsors (American Family Insurance is sponsoring The March), licensing to museums, and merchandise sales.</p><p>"It's our biggest differentiator in a crowded marketplace," said Ian Orefice, EVP and president of Time Studios. "Hundreds of millions of people will interact with Time in a way they never have before."</p><p>In other ways, Time is pulling from the standard media playbook:</p><ul><li>It's going deeper into live events, expanding its Time 100 franchise to five events last year from one.</li><li>It's making a bigger push for overseas advertisers and creating more ways to drum up <a href="https://digiday.com/media/times-new-invite-membership-program-will-cost-20000-year/">subscription revenue.</a></li><li>It's trying to make money off its videos through advertising and licensing to video platforms like Netflix and trying to leverage new voice platforms.</li></ul><h2>It's a tough time to be in the news business</h2><p>The Benioffs are among a crop of tech titans that have snapped up legacy publications lately. They paid $190 million to buy Time from Meredith, which inherited the magazine with its purchase of Time Inc. in 2018 and then sold off its non-lifestyle titles like Fortune and Sports Illustrated in addition to Time.</p><p>In announcing the purchase, Marc Benioff referred to Time's "unique storytelling of the people and issues that affect us all and connect us all" and as a "treasure trove of our history and culture." </p><p>Time has picked up some Benioff touches, moving into gleaming new offices in Salesforce's building and adopting Salesforce's "V2MOM," its planning tool that stands for vision, values, methods, obstacles, and measures. The Benioffs have regular conference calls with executives and had a hand in the decision to turn the Time 100 gala into a summit last year. Marc Benioff is big on improving the "customer journey" and at his suggestion, Time started collecting the emails of people who vote on the Time franchise Person of the Year for marketing purposes, Felsenthal said.</p><p>But Time employees said he's mostly been a hands-off steward, similar to the approach Jeff Bezos has taken with The Washington Post. </p><p>"He invests, he provides great guidance - he likes to know how you think about things," Grossman said.</p><p>The optimism about the Benioff's ownership is shared by editorial staffers, who also told Business Insider they hope to see improved benefits as they enter new contract negotiations (all editorial sections are now under representation by the News Guild).</p><p>Still, it's tough being in the news category these days, with many companies afraid to have their ads run next to polarizing content, and people's trust in the news falling. </p><p>Grossman's pitch is that unlike other, polarized news outlets, Time is editorially centrist, which makes it more trustworthy and safe for advertisers.</p><p>"You want a brand that's read in red states and blue states," Grossman said.</p><p>A new presentation for advertisers, meanwhile, emphasizes that while Time's print subscribers skew old and male, it's younger and more female when digital and social audiences are taken into account. And while the couple seem to be hands off day to day, employees said the Benioffs have made some subtle marks on the iconic newsweekly.</p><p>The Benioffs are among a crop of billionaire owners that have scooped up iconic but struggling publications, from The Washington Post to the Los Angeles Times to The Boston Globe, raising questions about what their motivations are and what kinds of stewards they'll be.</p><p><strong><em>Read more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marc-benioffs-time-reveals-plans-to-revive-the-news-magazine-2020-1">The president of Marc Benioff's Time reveals how he plans to restore the neglected title and make it a billion-dollar business</a></em></strong></p><p>Time languished under Time Warner and then Meredith Corp., where Time had to compete with sibling publications for resources and deal with the quarterly earnings pressure that comes with being part of a public company.</p><p>Once a title that generated $100 million in profits, it <a href="https://digiday.com/media/time-magazine-deal-win-brand-digital-age/">has been barely profitable in recent years</a> and its business has been in decline for years. </p><p>Yet the Benioffs paid a whopping $190 million for it, which is <a href="https://digiday.com/media/time-magazine-deal-win-brand-digital-age/">on the high end of recent similar transactions</a>. In announcing the purchase, Marc Benioff referred to Time's "unique storytelling of the people and issues that affect us all and connect us all" and as a "treasure trove of our history and culture."</p><p>The Benioffs provided a statement to Business Insider on their purchase, saying: "We are proud to be the owner of Time. As stewards of this trusted, iconic brand - we see an incredible opportunity for growth, innovation, and impact. We are fueling Time with investment and strategic guidance, and we have high expectations for the future of the company."</p><p>Former Bloomberg Media CRO Keith Grossman, who was hired last year as president, said he asked the couple why they bought Time. "They felt like it gives them a rational, centrist perspective on the world," he told Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marc-benioffs-time-reveals-plans-to-revive-the-news-magazine-2020-1">in a wide-ranging interview</a>. "He wants it to be around the next 100 years."</p><p>"Anyone who thinks it's a billionaire's trophy is wrong," he added. "He just said he wants it to run as a responsible business."</p><h2>Time has been on a hiring spree under the Benioffs</h2><p>The Benioff largesse has helped Time rebuild the infrastructure it lost when it became independent. It's also enabled Time to hire more than 100 people since the sale, for a total of 267 part and full-timers; rebuild its servers; and create a new video studio.</p><p>The Benioffs' involvement has been compared to the hands-off approach <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-people-at-the-washington-post-say-about-jeff-bezos-scandals-2019-2">Jeff Bezos has taken with The Washington Post</a> - they're in regular contact with executives, mostly though conference calls, where they give "advice and inspiration," but aren't day-to-day operators.</p><p>When executives said they wanted to turn the Time 100 gala into a summit the following year, the Benioffs encouraged them not to wait and do it that same year - even though the event was only a couple months off. </p><p>"I said to Marc and Lynne in February 2019, 'We've always wanted to expand the Time 100 from a list, so I thought this year we'd announce a summit in 2020,'" CEO and editor in chief Edward Felsenthal said. "They said, 'Why not do it this year?'" </p><p>On April 3, Time announced its first Time 100 summit, a day-long, star-studded event featuring the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Tim Cook, and Jared Kushner.</p><h2>The Benioffs are getting Time to think of the "customer journey"</h2><p>Another area they've had impact is in getting Time to think about the "customer journey." At Marc Benioff's suggestion, Time started collecting the emails of people who vote on the Time's annual Person of the Year so it could send them other things, like a first look at cover stories and top stories of the week.</p><p>The Benioffs have given a lot of money to health causes, an interest that has extended to Time. Health was the first vertical Time has expanded, starting with a Time 100-style summit. They talked about how to promote health-related products to people who subscribe to Time's health newsletter.</p><p>"They're both very committed to the world of health care - where do you take the brand next," Felsenthal said.</p><p>Lynne Benioff, meanwhile, had ideas on how to promote Time's forthcoming traveling exhibit on civil rights called The March.</p><h2>Time staff say the Benioffs have steered clear of editorial</h2><p>There are other Benioff touches. After the sale, it moved out into slick new offices covered in blond wood in Salesforce's building near New York's Bryant Park. Executives are using Salesforce's "V2MOM," its planning tool that stands for vision, values, methods, obstacles, and measures.</p><p>"He invests, he provides great guidance - he likes to know how you think about things," Grossman said.</p><p>But Time employees said the Benioffs, after making an appearance at the office after the sale, have mostly been hands-off. </p><p>"They're not operators; there's zero involvement in editorial," Felsenthal said.</p><p>That's the impression among members of Time's editorial staff as well.</p><p>"They're saying the right things," said one, who asked not to be identified. "The Benioffs talk a lot about trust being one of Time's highest values. It's ours as well."</p>

Evans <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6595678-160707-2019-Laurie-Evans-v-Bloomberg-L-P-Et-Al.html">claims in court filings</a> that Bloomberg LP has a "culture of discrimination" and that her former supervisor, then-chief revenue officer Keith Grossman, created a hostile work environment that adversely impacted her job performance and caused extreme emotional and psychological distress. Eight discrimination suits were launched after Bloomberg returned to his namesake company as president and CEO in 2014.</p><p>Last month, after ABC News followed up with <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bloombergs-sexist-remarks-fostered-company-culture-degraded-women/story?id=67744180">its own story</a> on the Bloomberg lawsuits, presidential candidate <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bloomberg-answer-sexist-comments-women-released-ndas-elizabeth/story?id=67764371&amp;cid=social_twitter_abcn">Elizabeth Warren called on Bloomberg</a> to release women from any nondisclosure agreements they may have signed with the company. The group Lift Our Voices, formed by three former Fox News employees to end the practice of mandatory non-disclosure agreements to conceal workplace misconduct, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/18/us/politics/2020-Democrats-Fox-News-NDAs.html">also sent letters to all of the presidential campaigns</a> urging them to publicly condemn these types of agreements in the context of workplace issues, such as sexual misconduct and a toxic work culture.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5cdeb6c3021b4c07ec7d70d7-1777/elizabeth%20warren.jpg" alt="Elizabeth Warren" /><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/John Minchillo</span></p><p class="caption">Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass</p><p>"Employees, and particularly female employees who are aware of discrimination in the workplace, if they become aware of it or become a victim of it, they are afraid to complain, to lose their job, to be retaliated against, to not be believed - and therefore they are silenced," Clancy told Business Insider. "When they are silenced, it breeds a culture. When you have a culture then and no one complains about it and it can be swept under the rug and managed internally, it gets worse and nothing gets better."</p><p>According to court records, the agreement Evans signed with Bloomberg LP in 2016 bars her from "disparaging [Bloomberg LP]" or making any "statements...to the media, to current or former employees or to others, that may be considered to be derogatory to the good name or business reputation" of Bloomberg LP.</p><p>Since 2016, Clancy has filed three cases against Bloomberg LP, including Evans' case. All three are currently ongoing and describe rampant discrimination and a toxic culture at Bloomberg LP. In one filing, a young woman identified as "Margaret Doe" alleged she was raped by her boss during her tenure at the company. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/fox-news-julie-roginsky-sexual-harassment-lawsuit-roger-ailes-2017-4">Julie Roginsky</a>, one of the founders of Lift Our Voices, told Business Insider that, thus far, Bloomberg has not responded to the group's letter. As of now, the group has heard from Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker, and GOP candidate former Rep. Joe Walsh, who all pledged not to use non-disclosure agreements to stop workers from discussing workplace issues. </p><p>Roginsky said that Biden and Walsh told the group that they don't use non-disclosure agreements for their campaign workers. In a statement to Lift Our Voices, the Biden campaign said "sexual harassment and other types of discrimination at work are simply unacceptable. No one should be forced to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevents them from speaking out about harassment or discrimination, and Joe Biden opposes non-disclosure agreements that have been used to silence survivors."</p><p>While Booker does employ non-disclosure agreements on his campaign to prevent aides from disclosing proprietary information, he won't enforce them for toxic workplace issues, <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/national/booker-wont-use-ndas-to-stop-staffers-from-discussing-toxic-workplace-environments/">the New Jersey Globe reported.</a></p><p>"Women should be able to tell their own stories and women should have the right to share their experiences, not just privately among themselves but also publicly toward others about potential hostile work issues that they may encounter if they work for any corporation. There is no reason why Bloomberg or any other corporation or organization works to prevent women from being able to speak truth to power," Roginsky said. "If the organization feels strongly there wasn't wrongdoing, it should be in a position to respond publicly to any allegations."</p><p><a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/insight-new-york-labor-law-changes-in-2020-time-to-evaluate-policies">Recent amendments to New York law</a> prevent employers from including non-disclosure provisions regarding discrimination claims unless that is the employees' preference. As of last week, non-disclosure agreements in New York <a href="https://www.ny.gov/combating-sexual-harassment-workplace/combating-sexual-harassment-frequently-asked-questions">must also include notice</a> that employees are not prohibited from "speaking with law enforcement, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the state Division of Human Rights, a local commission on human rights, or an attorney retained by the employee or potential employee."</p><p>The New York law follows <a href="http://www.constangy.net/nr_images/nj-s-121.pdf">similar legislation that went into effect</a> last year in New Jersey that bans non-disclosure agreements in cases alleging discrimination, retaliation, or harassment.</p><p>A person familiar with Evans' lawsuit said the amended complaint is an effort to pressure companies like Bloomberg LP to retroactively comply with the new law in New York.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ddd8831fd9db274ba1e00d7-1024/gettyimages-459954890.jpg" alt="Michael Bloomberg and Harvey Weinstein at 2014 Businessweek event" /><p class="source"><span>Kevin Mazur/Getty</span></p><p>Clancy said she has spoken to women who feared speaking out about their experiences at Bloomberg LP because they believed they could be sued or face retaliation. </p><p>"When you are hired, you sign an NDA," Clancy told Business Insider. "When you are either terminated or resign, you're asked to sign an NDA, and you are reminded of your obligation to not discuss any information that you've learned while at the company. And then of course if there are any complaints made post employment or legal claims brought there are settlement agreements, separation agreements that can also contain NDAs."</p><p>In its November report on Bloomberg LP's history of discrimination complaints, Business Insider asked the company and a Bloomberg campaign spokesperson whether, in light of Michael Bloomberg's presidential run, the company and the candidate will release employees with whom they have entered into nondisclosure agreements from their obligations to remain silent. Both declined to respond.</p><p>This week, a spokesperson for the Bloomberg campaign again declined to comment.</p><p>A Bloomberg LP spokesperson said in a statement: "Bloomberg strongly supports a culture that treats all employees with dignity and respect, and enforces that culture through clear policies and practices. Under pressure, Michael Bloomberg faces a new court challenge to his company's use of non-disclosure agreements in discrimination cases

It's the last of a number of lower-profile debates and forums during which candidates have attempted to make their case to the 447 voting DNC members about how to bring the Democratic party out of the electoral wilderness.</p><p>The next chair needs a majority of the 447 votes to win.</p><p>Though the candidates themselves went to lengths to maintain civility in the months since President Donald Trump's victory - a pact was created not to campaign negatively - the race has been viewed as a battle between the embattled establishment wing of the party and the emboldened progressive left.</p><p>While almost every candidate has emphasized strengthening state parties and broadening the vision beyond winning the presidency, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez has garnered praise and support from some former establishment-type figures, including his former colleagues serving under President Barack Obama.</p><p>Meanwhile, Rep. Keith Ellison's longtime leftist activism and vocal support during the 2016 Democratic primary for Sen. Bernie Sanders has helped the Minnesota congressman rally grassroots support.</p><p>The race appears fluid, as the campaigns have not released public lists of supporters and multiple media outlets have reported wildly different vote counts.</p><p>The Hill interviewed dozens of voting members and <a href="http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/320553-ellison-holds-edge-in-dnc-race">reported</a> Wednesday morning that Ellison had 105 supporters to Perez's 57, while The Associated Press spoke to an independent third-party strategist who reported that Perez had 205 committed voters to Ellison's 153.</p><p>The AP reported that South Carolina Democratic party chair Jaime Harrison had 27 committed supporters, while South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg had eight, and Idaho Democratic Party chair Sally Boynton Brown had 10. Keith Ellison</h2><p>Even before Hillary Clinton's upset loss in the 2016 presidential election, the Minnesota congressman <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/ellison-announces-for-dnc-chair-231335">was eyeing</a> the chair post, formally announcing his bid in mid-November with the backing of major party figures.</p><p>Ellison scooped up endorsements from some high-profile labor groups, as well as progressive leaders including Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. He also locked down vocal Clinton-backers like Sens. Chuck Schumer, Amy Klobuchar, and Chris Murphy, as well as former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.</p><p>Ellison has continued to shore up his progressive bona fides throughout the race, <a href="http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/1/5/14176068/dnc-chair-lobbyists">pledging</a> to reinstate a ban on lobbyist contributions to the DNC.</p><p>But his bid has faced some roadblocks.</p><p>Critics assailed the congressman over his <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/01/politics/kfile-keith-ellison-nation-of-islam/">previous statements</a> supporting the Nation of Islam and its anti-Semitic leader. Bush Institute's Military Service Initiative national summit, Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez</h2><p>A former labor secretary and deputy attorney general for civil rights, Perez is hoping his executive experience, connection with left-leaning labor and civil-rights groups, and commitment to "making house calls" and fighting voter suppression laws can woo DNC voters.</p><p>But Perez has been cast as the establishment pick, partially because of his support from high profile former administration officials, including former Vice President Joe Biden and former Attorney General Eric Holder.</p><p>Such support has proved to be a double-edged sword, as he's also been forced to explain his previous support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the controversial multinational trade pact that drew strong opposition from some labor communities. </p><p>Though Ellison's high-profile endorsements gave the appearance of early momentum, Perez also appears to have strong support. </p><p>Perez announced last week that he had 180 DNC members supporting his bid, and a campaign staffer told Business Insider on Thursday that he's gained additional supporters in the past week.</p><p>"Going into Atlanta, I'm proud of the broad support we've received from every corner of the country. I have spent this past week in one-on-one conversations with DNC members and in larger meetings with state parties discussing how we bring Democrats together, turn our party around, and work together to defeat Donald Trump's dangerous agenda," Perez said in a statement Thursday.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58addf3a549057bc008b633f-2400/undefined" alt="pete buttigieg" data-mce-source="REUTERS/Joshua Roberts" data-mce-caption="Pete Buttigieg speaks during a Democratic National Committee forum in Baltimore." /><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Joshua Roberts</span></p><p class="caption">Pete Buttigieg speaks during a Democratic National Committee forum in Baltimore.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg</h2><p>Buttigieg has perhaps the most interesting resume of any candidate seeking the chair's position.</p><p>A 35-year-old, Harvard-educated, gay Naval reserve officer who can claim the title Afghanistan veteran and Rhode Scholar, Buttigieg announced his candidacy in January, casting himself as a third option for Democrats hoping to move past the fight between the left and the establishment. </p><p>"The proxy characterization - I think it's a little unfair to some of the candidates, but I do think that it's there, and I think it's bad for business. We can't be seen as trapped in that kind of fight," Buttigieg told Business Insider in January.</p><p>He added: "Everyone in this race is progressive, everyone wants to be chair, and wants to be chair in order to defend progressive values. And so we've got a way to transcend that divide. We're always going to be a party just like the other side with people with some diversity of opinion. But we've got to keep it together."</p><p>Beyond his appeals to empowering local parties, Buttigieg also highlighted his success at winning elections in the Rust Belt among voters who abandoned the Democratic party for Trump.</p><p>The former mayor has racked up a few prominent endorsements, including former chairs Howard Dean and Steve Grossman and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley. He told NPR that the Democratic Party became complacent during Obama's administration and forgot to compete in states like his own.</p><p>Harrison has a handful of prominent public supporters, including Rep. Tim Ryan and Rep. I don't think we have any overarching identity message. We've let the Republicans frame the debate and frame our party for a really long time. The fight for the future of the Democratic Party is about to reach a critical point

But the TV business has reasons to be wary of the search giant's clout.</strong></li></ul><p>For Google, TV is the final frontier. So it would make sense that to get there, the search giant started with Star Trek.</p><p>As CBS bets big on the latest original <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/star-trek-discovery-review-premiere-cbs-all-access-2017-9">"Star Trek" series</a> as the anchor series for its fledgling streaming subscription service <a href="https://www.cbs.com/all-access/">CBS All Access</a>, it is relying on Google's technology to deliver ads.</p><p>That partnership will hardly shift the power structure of the TV <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> business on its own. But it's a significant win for Google.</p><p><span>"The CBS partnership is big for us," said Rany Ng, Google's director of product management for video. She points to the "Star Trek" digital distribution as an example of how seriously big <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies are taking the changes in TV. </span></p><p><span>Google has attempted to wedge its way into TV several times over the last decade, with very mixed results. But o</span>ver the last six months or so, Google has been quietly and deliberately trying to sell its ad serving software to big TV and video players.</p><p>That puts Google directly in competition with cable giant Comcast - which owns Freewheel, the leader in delivering ads to people who stream TV shows on the web.</p><p>In some cases, Google has held corporate level discussions with some of the giant TV conglomerates about strategic partnerships. Those deals would theoretically provide these TV companies with some incentives for adopting Google's video ad technology, such as including proprietary access to some Google data that could be used for ad targeting, said people familiar with the matter. </p><p>The stakes are high. Though ad-free streaming services like Netflix still dominate, more and more people are streaming ad-supported TV content through smart TVs and apps, whether that's through Hulu, CBS All Access, or Watch ESPN.</p><p>If Google can insert itself into the TV ad ecosystem as the provider of the pipes through which most ads flow, it could establish a powerful position that could theoretically set it up to take on more.</p><p>For example, Google could offer some of its consumer data to help TV companies sell more targeted ads. It could maybe even build a TV ad exchange, accelerating a future when TV ads are traded "programmatically" much like web ads, using automated software.</p><p>"If you think about Google's future growth, it's not clear they can maintain the momentum they have without taking over the TV industry," said a media insider.</p><p>That is, if the TV business decides to let Google into its world. There are many that don't want them around.</p><h2>Google's tried to crack TV for a long time</h2><p>Google's current push into TV is a essentially a two-pronged approach. Besides trying to displace Comcast for ad delivery, last spring Google also rolled out an ad buying software tool, <a href="http://adage.com/article/digital/google-sees-chance-programmatic-tv/308771/">as Ad Age reported.</a></p><p>This is not the first time Google has made this move. <a href="http://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/google-tv-adds-nielsen-data-90782/">As far back as 2007,</a> Google had a business promising to bring elements of digital advertising to the TV world. It had deals to help TV networks sell excess inventory, but that initiative, Google TV Ads, never took off and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-is-shutting-down-tv-ads-2012-9">was shuttered in 2012.</a></p><p>In addition, Google also has <a href="https://www.android.com/intl/en_au/tv/">Android TV</a>, software that powers many smart TVs. But its initial ambition to own the TV screen interface never materialized.</p><p>This time around, Google appears to have some real momentum.</p><p>Besides CBS, Google has inked deals with a growing number of TV networks to deliver ads in streams, including Bloomberg, AMC, the CW, BBC America and Lifetime. A few weeks ago, Google rolled out a slew of new ad products on this front - <a href="https://adexchanger.com/ad-exchange-news/stay-tuned-new-tv-ad-products-google/">which AdExchanger covered in depth.</a></p><p>To date, over 50 top TV and entertainment companies in the US, Canada, and and Latin America use Google's ad platform. </p><p>To be sure, Comcast's Freewheel has a big head start in this space, and works with lots of marquee TV companies, including NBCUniversal, Disney and Turner. They won't be easy to unseat. </p><h2>TV and the web are getting married</h2><p>"This new generation is just not going to understand this concept of scheduled programming," said Ng at Google. "They are really screen agnostic. This is a massive viewer paradigm shift and something the whole industry is trying to figure out."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/51369629ecad04f021000001-1280/mychannels.jpg" alt="New Roku 3 Interface" data-mce-source="Roku" /><p class="source"><span>Roku</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>To help figure things out, Google promises media companies that its tech can yield much more sophisticated TV advertising. For example:</p><ul><li>Google can tell you what people search for directly after watching a show or watching an ad.</li><li>TV networks can use Google's tools to gain more insight into the audiences that watch their shows, which can help with forecasting and managing revenue.</li><li>Advertisers can also use the Google software to bring their own data to the table for ad targeting.</li><li>Plus Google says its tools will make sure that people don't see the same ads over and over again and that competitive advertisers won't find theirs ads running next to each other.</li></ul><p>"We use millions of signals," said Ng. "This is really about how to make TV ads smarter. The company's DoubleClick business is the most commonly used ad platform among publishers and advertisers to deliver web ads to the right place at the right time.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59e113a4d4e920b4108b4fca-1499/unnamed-2.png" alt="unnamed 2" data-mce-source="Google" data-mce-caption="Google promises it can help TV companies make more money from streaming ads" /><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Google promises it can help TV companies make more money from streaming ads</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>So if anyone's going to build the "DoubleClick of TV" it may as well be Google.</p><h2>Google's track record, vs. Google's track record</h2><p>"Google is going to be seen as very legitimate in the marketplace," said Dave Morgan, CEO of the TV ad targeting firm Simulmedia. "This is a more natural way for them to get in through technology. Many in the TV industry fear the very idea of programmatic advertising to begin with, associating it with low prices and unnecessary middlemen.</p><p>And then there's the general fear of giving Google even more power, as TV executives watch it and Facebook - the dreaded duopoly - thoroughly dominate all comers in digital advertising.</p><p>Jason Burke, VP of strategic development at Clypd, an ad tech company with a foothold in the TV ad business, said that given Google's long-held, advantaged position as managing the leading ad delivery system in digital media (DoubleClick), they are surely salivating over making that thing same happen in the massive TV market. "But there are significant challenges."</p><p>For one, the technology is very different in TV, Burke said. Not to mention that Google competes with TV networks for ad budgets on YouTube.</p><p>"You'll have to consider whether you want to partner with a company that wakes up every morning trying to kill you," said a media executive. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/4fec71bdeab8ea6113000001-400/21478193773947c2d160.jpg" alt="costco tvs" data-mce-source="Flickr/Orin Zebest" data-link="http://www.flickr.com/photos/orinrobertjohn/2147819377/" /><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/orinrobertjohn/2147819377/">Flickr/Orin Zebest</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The biggest hurdle Google faces, said Burke, is that digital advertising deals with an oversupply of ad inventory. There's more ads than anybody can buy. So ad tech is very useful.</p><p>Because there are only so many ads that can be shown on TV networks in a 24 hour period, TV has a constrained supply, in contrast. The number of TV ads is essentially finite.</p><p>"The supply and demand dynamic is flipped,' said <span>Burke</span> "That's a pretty damn big difference." Plus, TV ads are typically sold weeks or months in advance, when web ads can be purchased at the last second.</p><p>And one top TV ad sales executive said that Google's TV ad tech is actually inferior to Freewheel's, and the switching challenges are "massive."</p><p>Yet Megan Latham, global head advertising operations for Bloomberg Media raved about the tech, which the company uses to deliver ads via Apple TV and plans to eventually employ for its live streaming. "They are using machine learning to help you make the most money you can from your ads," she said. "It really answers all of our needs."</p><h2>Mad Men vs. Silicon Valley</h2><p>Google also faces a big cultural barrier. TV is a <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/Article/Digital-Ad-Spending-Surpass-TV-Next-Year/1013671">$72 billion ad market in the US</a>, one that's been growing of late.</p><p>Consider the recent TV ad sales upfront, the annual period when top TV networks sell upwards of two thirds of their its ad space. Despite all of the ratings challenges in TV, the market was , was robust, <a href="http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/2017-tv-upfront-advertising-measurement-1202494620/">reported Variety. </a></p><p>And many of these big deals include streaming TV inventory. Meaning that TV ad networks aren't sitting on lots of unsold ad space.</p><p>So folks who've worked in TV for a long time may think, why mess with it?</p><p>"They are in an industry that has been established for years, and they're protecting an infrastructure," said Keith Grossman, chief revenue officer at Bloomberg. "But that's not the way brands want to operate."</p><p>"Some of these people are in denial that this is happening, or thinking, it's not going to happen before I retire," said Burke at <span>Clypd</span>. "A lot of people in the industry are very worried and scared."</p><h2>You are not alone</h2><p>Google isn't the only tech company trying to conquer TV ads. Facebook has been running tests with a handful of video partners to help them use Facebook's robust consumer data to target connected TV ads, <a href="https://www.recode.net/2016/11/4/13512982/facebook-tv-ads-apple-tv-roku">reported Recode.</a></p><p>AT&amp;T, with its pending acquisition of Time Warner, is pledging to reinvent TV advertising. And of course, there's Amazon, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-promising-nfl-advertisers-it-will-track-whether-their-ads-work-2017-9">which is dipping its toe into TV ads this year</a> by streaming NFL games.</p><p>Google may be just the most methodical about its plans at the moment. </p><p>"There's just so many things we can improve," said Ng "We think there's an opportunity to reinvent that 30-second commercial. I think people have been open to partnering with us.
