The gauntlet is a weapon capable of combining the powers of the six Infinity Stones, which each control a fundamental aspect of life itself, in turn. The stones include the Space Stone, Mind Stone, Power Stone, Soul Stone, Time Stone, and Reality Stone.</p><p>In "God Of War," the true power of the Shattered Gauntlet of Ages unlocks when you power it up with three out of six "enchantments" you can find in the game.</p><p>The enchantments, which give your "God of War" gear unique powers and abilities, also have names that correspond to the six Infinity Stones, as Redditors also discovered. <p>You are not ready for "God of War" on PlayStation 4. I certainly wasn't.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Maybe you've seen the trailers, or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/god-of-war-ps4-review-2018-4">read our review</a>? Or maybe you're only vaguely aware of a PlayStation 4 reboot to the long-running "God of War" franchise? Maybe you've never played a "God of War" game! Maybe you're a veteran video game journalist who was expecting a 10-to-12 hour hack-and-slash game?</p><p>Turns out, we're all in the same wobbly boat as Kratos and his son Atreus, the game's heroes. It's hard to imagine someone being adequately prepared for the sweeping epic that is the new "God of War." It's not just a <em>really</em> good game -&#xa0; it's an absolutely massive blockbuster that's full of surprises for even seasoned, cynical video game nerds like myself.</p><p>Allow me to explain:</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In March, the Air Force accepted the first <keyword id="10667167" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="F-15EX">F-15EX</keyword>, the first new fourth-generation fighter in 20 years.</li><li>The F-15EX is based on a proven design and will replace jets that are close to their breaking points.</li><li>But critics say that in the wars of the future, a jet like the F-15EX is just "an expensive target."</li></ul><p>In March, the Air Force accepted its newest fighter, the <a href="https://www.boeing.com/defense/f-15ex/" target="_top">F-15EX</a>, the first new fourth-generation fighter in over two decades.</p><p>At a <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2021/04/07/its-official-air-forces-new-f-15ex-fighter-will-be-called-eagle-ii.html" target="_top">ceremony</a> to mark the occasion, Air National Guard Director Lt. Gen. Mike Loh said the fighter's arrival "is very timely," as the Air Force "must ensure that we have the most capable combat aircraft defending our shores during this time of great-power competition."</p><p>The Air Force hopes to acquire 144 of the jets over the next decade and has an option to buy up to 200. Despite the fanfare, the decision to acquire the F-15EX has faced considerable criticism.</p><p>"It's an expensive way of getting shot down, and the Air Force is wholly ill-equipped to field this aircraft from multiple standpoints," Doug Birkey, the executive director of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Power Studies, told Insider.</p><p>The criticism stems from concerns that the F-15EX, a modernized version of a 45-year-old design, stands little to no chance of survival in the modern threat environment, that it will take resources from other designs and programs, and that it will actually cost more in the long run than more fifth-generation jets.</p><h2>Replacing aging fighters</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force F-15 fighter jet" height="1537" width="2500" msid="83062832" hostid="261"></div><p>At first glance, buying the F-15EX seems like a no-brainer. It is a modernization of a tried-and-true design that <a href="https://warisboring.com/has-anyone-ever-shot-down-an-f-15-in-air-combat/" target="_top">has never lost a battle in aerial combat</a>.</p><p>Moreover, the aging F-15Cs and F-15Ds it will replace are close to their breaking points, with 75% of them flying "well beyond" their service life, <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2021/04/07/its-official-air-forces-new-f-15ex-fighter-will-be-called-eagle-ii.html" target="_top">according</a> to Lt. Gen. Duke Richardson, military deputy for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics.</p><p>Those fighters were supposed to be replaced by the F-22 Raptor, a <keyword id="9945121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fifth-generation-fighter">fifth-generation fighter</keyword>, but F-22 production ceased in 2009 with less than half the original order built due to budget cuts.</p><p>That production halt, and the slow rollout and ballooning cost of the F-35, also a fifth-generation fighter, have forced the Air Force to use F-15s past their expected service lives.</p><p>Although the F-15EX's per-unit cost of $87.7 million is slightly more than the F-35's $77.9 million, the F-15EX's operating cost of $27,000 an hour is expected to be lower than that of the F-35, which Lockheed Martin <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/fixed-wing/lockheed-martin-confident-f-35-operating-cost-will-be-reduced-to-25000-per-hour/142577.article" target="_top">says</a> is $36,000. (The F-35's per-hour cost has come down in recent years, and Lockheed <a href="https://www.lockheedmartin.com/en-us/news/features/2020/cost-per-flight-hour-reduced-by-25-percent-for-f-35-targeting-system.html" target="_top">says</a> it could be reduced to $25,000 by 2025.)</p><p>The Air Force wants a mix of fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft, as not all fighter jets will have the same missions and thus do not need the same capabilities.</p><p>The Defense Department also <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2019/03/22/pentagon-buying-f-15ex-alongside-f-35s-preserve-diversity-official-says.html" target="_top">wants</a> to maintain a "robust industrial base." Without the F-15, all of the Air Force's fighters would be built by Lockheed Martin.</p><h2>Questionable survivability and cost</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force F-15EX fighter jet" height="1333" width="2000" msid="83062833" hostid="261"></div><p>The F-15EX's lack of stealth capabilities is a significant tradeoff.</p><p>Non-stealth aircraft are heavily reliant on accompanying support aircraft - doing things like electronic warfare, combat escort, and air-defense suppression - to carry out their missions. This dramatically increases the number of jets need to carry out airstrikes.</p><p>In <a href="https://a2dd917a-65ab-41f1-ab11-5f1897e16299.usrfiles.com/ugd/a2dd91_a046ea712d0e4b7fb6f7afc4483df56f.pdf" target="_top">one operation</a> during Desert Storm, for instance, three targets at one airfield in Iraq required 41 US and Saudi fourth-generation aircraft to ensure a successful strike - only eight of those aircraft actually dropped bombs.</p><p>Around the same time, 20 F-117s, the US's first stealth aircraft, operating on their own successfully attacked 38 sites at 28 separate target areas.</p><p>More aircraft naturally mean higher costs, and many of those support aircraft are no longer in the Air Force's inventory, which means it has to rely on the Navy to provide them.</p><p>Moreover, Russian and Chinese <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2020/Jul/28/2002466237/-1/-1/1/CHINESE_RUSSIAN_MISSILE_DEFENSE_FACT_SHEET.PDF" target="_top">surface-to-air missile systems</a> (SAMs) and <a href="https://www.iiss.org/publications/the-military-balance/the-military-balance-2018/mb2018-01-essays-1" target="_top">air-to-air missiles</a> (AAMs) have gotten considerably more sophisticated since the 1990s.</p><p>China <a href="https://www.airuniversity.af.edu/Portals/10/CASI/Books/2020-11-%2030%20Air-to-Air%20Missiles%20and%20Guidance%20Systems.pdf?ver=C8qY98R8IETgcweqak0tqA%3D%3D" target="_top">has a number</a> of AAMs in service and in development that are just as capable as the US's AAMs, and some even have longer ranges. Iran <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/iran-tests-new-russian-made-s-300-missile-system/a-37808317" target="_top">has already bought</a> advanced anti-air weaponry from Russia and <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/russia-sell-advanced-anti-air-missiles-s-400-iran-despite-us-threats-ambassador-1536313" target="_top">may buy</a> more.</p><p>"It's not just fighting China and Russia. It's wherever their stuff happens to be," Birkey said, pointing to Syria as an example.</p><p>Those factors all raise questions about F-15EX's survivability and cost benefits.</p><p>"The problem is, if they are not good enough to do the job, survive, and keep rolling, what did you buy?" Birkey said. "You bought an expensive target."</p><h2>A more threatening environment</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force F-15EX fighter jet" height="1333" width="2000" msid="83062835" hostid="261"></div><p>If the F-15EX were to go up against such weaponry and losses were to mount, replacing them would not be easy.</p><p>"We no longer live in the era where we can back all these kinds of losses," Birkey told Insider.</p><p>"We don't have the aircraft-production capabilities and capacity, and we certainly don't have the pilot-generation capabilities," Birkey said, adding that the service already has <a href="https://warontherocks.com/2020/10/the-air-force-pilot-retention-crisis-is-not-over/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a pilot shortage</a> "and none of our guys are dying due to combat loss."</p><p>While the F-35EX's lack of stealth is a big problem, critics don't suggest only buying F-35s or F-22s.</p><p>Rather, many say the Air Force should double-down on new designs and concepts, like the <a href="https://www.sandboxx.us/blog/the-air-force-just-dropped-this-concept-art-of-its-ngad-fighter/" target="_top">Next Generation Air Dominance program</a> or unmanned fighters like Kratos Defense's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-air-force-says-the-valkyrie-drone-launched-another-drone-2021-4" target="_top">XQ-58A Valkyrie</a> or Boeing's <a href="https://www.boeing.com/defense/airpower-teaming-system/" target="_top">Airpower Teaming System</a>.</p><p>With budgets already tight, more money spent on the F-15EX may mean less for those programs.</p><div type="image" title="Air Force F-15EX fighter jet" height="1333" width="2000" msid="83062837" hostid="261"></div><p>US defense officials acknowledge that a great-power war would be far different from the conflicts the US has fought over the past 20 years.</p><p>In April, during his first significant policy speech, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/next-major-war-will-be-very-different-us-defense-secretary-2021-04-30/?fbclid=IwAR3dC1lRpA5OQbFYuuFXDvJdropmHjIH9Tn02jDdb3P83_2sy6180ODXVPQ" target="_top">said</a> "the way we fight the next major war is going to look very different from the way we fought the last ones" and emphasized a need for "the right mix of technology, operational concepts and capabilities."</p><p>Gen. Charles Q. Brown, the Air Force chief of staff, admitted in his first major strategic document that in a future war, the Air Force could face combat losses "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/future-war-losses-like-wwii-top-air-force-officer-says-2020-9" target="_top">more akin to the World War II era</a>" than to recent conflicts.</p><p>Fifth-generation jets are designed with this in mind and are made to win conflicts with stakes beyond the battlefield, Birkey told Insider.</p><p>"You could fight in Iraq and Afghanistan for two decades, effectively lose in both, and nothing really changes in mainstream America," Birkey said.</p><p>"The wars that we're increasingly looking at, and for which the F-22 and F-35 are built, are wars where if we do not succeed, life fundamentally changes in a very bad way," he added. "We need to wake up to that and act accordingly."</p>

The Air Force's newest fighter jet may not be what it needs to win the next war

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Navy is working on a variety of unmanned platforms to augment the fleet's operations.</li><li>Recent developments with its unmanned aerial systems reflect the major role those system could play in the Navy's future fleet.</li></ul><p>In December, the <keyword id="10959315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mq-25">MQ-25</keyword> Stingray successfully <a href="https://www.boeing.com/features/2020/12/mq-25-takes-off-with-aerial-refueling-store.page" target="_top">made</a> its first flight with an aerial refueling store, carrying a <a href="https://www.cobhammissionsystems.com/air-to-air-refuelling/hose-and-drogue-systems/buddy-refuelling-pods/" target="_top">Cobham ARS</a> under its left wing for about 2.5 hours.</p><p>The flight was intended to test the drone's aerodynamics with the same system used by the Navy's F/A-18s for aerial-refueling missions.</p><p>Capt. Chad Reed, the Navy's Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager, <a href="https://boeing.mediaroom.com/news-releases-statements?item=130780" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the test was "one big step closer in our evaluation of how the MQ-25 will fulfill its primary mission in the fleet - aerial refueling."</p><p>The MQ-25 milestone was followed in February by a test in which an unmanned resupply drone <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/2511732/naval-air-force-atlantic-demonstrates-uas-prototype/" target="_top">delivered</a> spare parts to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.</p><p>The Navy has <a href="https://news.usni.org/2021/03/18/lawmakers-question-who-will-shepherd-navys-future-unmanned-fleet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">struggled</a> with its unmanned platforms, but recent developments show it is getting serious about unmanned aerial systems and reflect the major role those system could have in the future fleet.</p><h2>The first carrier-based drone</h2><div type="image" title="Navy RQ-21A Blackjack drone" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81591349" hostid="261"></div><p>The Stingray is not the Navy's first drone. Smaller models like the ScanEagle, RQ-21 Blackjack, and MQ-8 Fire Scout have seen service on various Navy vessels, while versions of the MQ-4C Triton, which is similar to the Stingray in size, have been flown by the Navy from land for at least three years.</p><p>But none of those drones have operated on carriers. The Navy began searching for a carrier-based drone in 2006 with the Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike program.</p><p>The program originally called for a drone with strike and reconnaissance capabilities, but the increased range of anti-ship defenses and an expected shortage of pilots in the future led the Navy to shift the program's focus to aerial refueling.</p><p>The idea was sound: An unmanned aerial-refueling system would free up pilots and other carrier aircraft for combat duties and extend the range of a carrier's air wing by almost 50%.</p><p>By 2013, Northrop Grumman's X-47B demonstrator had successfully taken off from and landed on USS George H.W. Bush. Despite being the frontrunner, Northrup Grumman withdrew the X-47B from consideration in 2017 due to concerns that it could not be repurposed in a cost-effective manner.</p><div type="image" title="Navy Boeing MQ-25 refueling drone tanker" height="765" width="1400" msid="81591351" hostid="261"></div><p>Of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-carrier-based-drone-race-mq-25-stingray-2018-4#general-atomics-3" target="_top">three designs</a> remaining, the Navy selected Boeing's on April 30, 2018. A year later, the Stingray made its first flight.</p><p>December's test was the first time the Stingray carried the aerial-refueling technology that is central to its mission. Future tests will involve extending and retracting the ARS hose, as well as flights with F/A-18s. Deck-handling tests aboard carriers are also being planned.</p><p>"What we're focusing on is launching, landings, moving it around on the deck, bringing it up, taking it down in the hangar bay - how do we position those assets and how can we support the air wing?" Adm. James Kilby, deputy chief of naval operations for war-fighting requirements and capabilities, said of the MQ-25 at a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Thursday.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/mq-25-stingray-unmanned-aerial-refuelling-aircraft/" target="_top">Stingray</a> will be able to carry 15,000 pounds of fuel about 500 nautical miles. It will operate alongside and refuel EA-18G Growler electronic-warfare aircraft as well as F/A-18 and F-35C fighters.</p><p>The MQ-25 is expected to reach initial operating capability by 2024. While the Navy has ordered seven for testing, it intends to have as many as 72 in service. The Navy also plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-announces-new-warrant-officer-program-for-mq25-refueling-drone-2020-12" target="_top">recruit</a> 450 new warrant officers over the next six to 10 years to operate MQ-25s.</p><p>With the December tests, the MQ-25 has logged more than 30 hours of training flights.</p><h2>Blue Water <keyword id="435993" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Unmanned-aircraft">Unmanned Aircraft</keyword> System</h2><div type="image" title="Navy unmanned aerial system UAV drone resupply" height="1351" width="2000" msid="81591352" hostid="261"></div><p>The Navy's plans for unmanned systems do not end at aerial refueling.</p><p>On February 21, a Blue Water Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) delivered "light-weight logistical equipment" to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.</p><p>The drone, built by Texas-based aerospace company <a href="https://skyways.com/#usecases" target="_top">Skyways</a>, is capable of traveling 500 miles and carrying 30-pound loads.</p><p>Despite the small cargo, Capt. John Bush, director of aircraft material and engineering for Naval Air Forces Atlantic, <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/2511732/naval-air-force-atlantic-demonstrates-uas-prototype/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> the test "a first step in revolutionizing logistics support to maximize operational availability and lethality for these critical capital assets."</p><p>The Navy has said that up to 90% of the logistical issues that move ships into non-mission-capable or partially mission-capable status can be fixed with components weighing less than 50 pounds.</p><p>SH-60 Seahawk helicopters or V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft currently make such deliveries, but unmanned aircraft are seen as a cost-effective alternative.</p><h2>The unmanned future</h2><div type="image" title="Navy MQ-8B Fire Scout drone helicopter" height="1429" width="2000" msid="81591354" hostid="261"></div><p>Of course, the Navy's drones are not just for logistics. Most serve an important role by carrying out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, and some, like the <keyword id="10959314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mq-8b">MQ-8B</keyword>, can actually be armed with missiles.</p><p>"There is some payload capacity in [the MQ-25] that we think has great promise for us, so I think initially we would transition to ISR" before moving to more complex electronic-attack or strike missions, Kilby said Thursday.</p><p>"We think we could get upward of 40% of the aircraft in an air wing that are unmanned and then transition beyond that," Kilby said.</p><p>Navy submarines <a href="https://seapowermagazine.org/admiral-submarine-launched-uas-proving-awesome-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are also working on</a> using drones to aid targeting. Since subs avoid launching torpedoes at periscope depth to minimize the risk of being spotted, drones could ensure long-range torpedo attacks hit their mark.</p><p>The service reached initial operational capability with a sub-launched unmanned aerial system in September, Rear Adm. Dave Goggins, the Navy's program executive officer for submarines, <a href="https://seapowermagazine.org/admiral-submarine-launched-uas-proving-awesome-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> during a Naval Submarine League webinar in November, calling it "a pretty awesome capability to provide to the fleet."</p><p>Completely <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/weapons/R45757.pdf" target="_top">unmanned ships and underwater vehicles</a> tasked with logistics, anti-submarine warfare, and mine-clearing missions are also in development. The Navy <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2020/Dec/10/2002549918/-1/-1/0/SHIPBUILDING%20PLAN%20DEC%2020_NAVY_OSD_OMB_FINAL.PDF/SHIPBUILDING%20PLAN%20DEC%2020_NAVY_OSD_OMB_FINAL.PDF" target="_top">plans</a> to have 143 unmanned vessels in service by 2045.</p><div type="image" title="xq 58a valkyrie kratos.JPG" height="1462" width="2200" msid="81591357" hostid="261"></div><p>The Marine Corps' <a href="https://www.hqmc.marines.mil/Portals/142/Docs/CMC38%20Force%20Design%202030%20Report%20Phase%20I%20and%20II.pdf?ver=2020-03-26-121328-460" target="_top">Force Design 2030</a> report also calls for a 50% increase in unmanned-aerial-vehicle squadrons. The Corps <a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/03/10/marines-ditch-mux-ship-based-drone-to-pursue-large-land-based-uas-smaller-shipboard-vehicle" target="_top">hop</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/03/10/marines-ditch-mux-ship-based-drone-to-pursue-large-land-based-uas-smaller-shipboard-vehicle" target="_top">es</a> to acquire "a family of systems" of different sizes and capabilities to meet its drone requirements.</p><p>With development underway on unmanned combat aircraft like the Kratos <a href="https://www.kratosdefense.com/systems-and-platforms/unmanned-systems/aerial/tactical-uavs" target="_top">XQ-58 Valkyrie</a> and the Boeing <a href="http://www.boeing.com/defense/airpower-teaming-system/" target="_top">Airpower Teaming System</a>, some <a href="https://cimsec.org/the-future-is-unmanned-why-the-navys-next-generation-fighter-shouldnt-have-a-pilot/" target="_top">argue</a> the Navy's <a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top">next carrier-</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top">based</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top"> fighter</a> should be unmanned as well.</p><p>The idea may not be so far-fetched; last summer, an artificial-intelligence program developed by Heron Systems <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-just-beat-a-human-pilot-in-a-simulated-dogfight-2020-8" target="_top">defeated a US Air Force F-16 pilot</a> in five simulated dogfights. Heron Systems claimed the program went through 4 billion simulations before the event, though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-pilot-not-surprised-ai-beat-human-in-simulated-dogfight-2020-8" target="_top">former fighter pilots told Insider the program still wasn't comparable to a human pilot</a>.</p><p>"These sustained investments will yield new capabilities extending well beyond the effectiveness of standalone platforms or human-centered systems," Thomas Harker, acting Secretary of the Navy, said in the service's <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Portals/1/Strategic/20210315%20Unmanned%20Campaign_Final_LowRes.pdf?ver=LtCZ-BPlWki6vCBTdgtDMA%3D%3D" target="_top">recently released</a> Unmanned Campaign Framework. "They will transform naval warfare by providing asymmetric advantages to each and every sailor and Marine."</p>

<p>Following is a transcript of the video.</p><p>The top 10 games coming out in 2018.</p><p><strong>Ben Gilbert:</strong> Here are the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-games-2018-list-2017-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">best games</a> coming out in the next nine months. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq02p3z3X2k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spider-Man</a> is coming back to video game consoles this spring exclusively on the PlayStation 4. It's an open-world game, it looks gorgeous, and it puts Peter Parker in the modern world. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqaipBpnVRE&amp;amp=&amp;t=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Red Dead Redemption 2</a> is probably the biggest game coming out in 2018.  It's set to arrive in October and it's the long-awaited sequel to the first Red Dead Redemption. A large, open-world, third-person action game on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The new game is, of course, coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And it's also set in the Old West, it's also a big open-world and it's from the folks who brought you Grand Theft Auto, so it should be pretty excellent interesting, violent, lots of different adjectives.</p><p>It's another year and therefore there is a new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJv-xtxKkQY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Call of Duty</a> coming out. It is, of course, another first-person shooter. It's the beloved series that puts lots of players running up against each other in online multiplayer. The new one, we don't know the setting just yet but we do know it's a sequel to the Black Ops subseries in the Call of Duty franchise. There's a new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Gt42kVgCw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Smash Brothers</a> game on the way coming to the Nintendo Switch this year. We don't know exactly when but we do know that it's a brand new game in the long-running fighting game series from Nintendo. We know it'll star lots of major Nintendo characters and we know that some new characters are coming from Splatoon 2, but otherwise, that's all we know for now, but it does look really interesting.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e-yAATMjBI&amp;feature=youtu.be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">God of War</a> is back. He's slightly less angry, he looks slightly less pale. He's coming back in a brand new game that reinvents the God of War franchise. It is called...God of War. Surprise. It's a third-person action game.  You play as Kratos, the returning hero of  God of War and the addition in this game is that he's with his son and they're fighting new types of enemies in a Norse mythology-based world and it looks incredible. That also arrives on April 20th. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5CTlRKa1SE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kingdom Hearts 3</a> is finally coming out this year on the PlayStation 4. It's the third entry in the long-running Kingdom Hearts franchise. It's a third-person action RPG franchise that puts the worlds of Square Enix and Final Fantasy together with the worlds of Disney. It looks gorgeous just like the previous Kingdom Hearts games like it was ripped from a cartoon. But we'll see if it actually makes it out this year.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J1eO7VPbSU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Octopath Traveler</a> is a very weird name for a game maybe, but it's a very literal name in this sense as it's a game where you play as one of eight different types of characters in a classic Japanese role-playing game style. It's for the Nintendo Switch, it's from Square Enix, and it's kind of a throwback to the Final Fantasys and Dragon Quests you might have played growing up. It looks like they took a Super Nintendo game and made it into a beautiful modern experience and it's coming to the Nintendo Switch this summer. </p><p>The third in the new trilogy of Tomb Raider games is arriving this year. It's called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBsmtYZg6Cs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shadow of the Tomb Raider</a> and it's coming out this September on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It continues the story of Lara Croft as she kind of discovers herself and becomes the Tomb Raider that we all know and love today. </p><p>On April 20th, Nintendo is releasing a brand new toy? Game? Controller thing? It's called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cRE95J4Xb4&amp;feature=youtu.be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nintendo Labo</a> and you actually construct video game controllers that are paired with specific games out of cardboard. It's a, kind of, combination DIY make-your-own-controller video game thing. It's kind of aimed at kids.  It's aimed at parents and kids playing together. It looks really neat. And that arrives on April 20th on the Nintendo Switch.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcuFJXgU6cA&amp;amp=&amp;t=333s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Death Stranding</a>, perhaps the most exciting game on this list, that also may not come out this year... It's the next game coming from Hideo Kojima, the long-running creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It's his first new game away from Metal Gear in almost 30 years and it looks completely bananas. It's coming to the PlayStation 4 exclusively. It may or may not come out this year. Hideo Kojima is kind of known for releasing games when they are ready, rather than when the release date has come up. So, we'll see if it makes 2018, but we're hoping it does because it looks bananas. So that's it. Those are the top ten games coming out in 2018. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The United States Air Force is making its case for a massive expansion that senior officials say is necessary to counter growing threats from technologically advanced superpowers while still protecting the homeland and fighting insurgencies.</p><p>And while meeting the exact numbers in the time frame given might prove to be impossible, the ambitious plan should create plenty of big-ticket opportunities for <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">defense</keyword> contractors.</p><p>Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson on Sept. 17 laid out the case for growing the service by 24% from a current 312 squadrons to 386 by 2030, shooting for numbers unseen since the end of the Cold War.</p><p>Wilson said that the specific proposals are based on more than 2,000 models and simulations run over the last six months, and take into account the vast number of tasks Air Force equipment and personnel are required to take on.</p><p>The military must "defend the homeland, provide a credible nuclear deterrent, win against a major power while encountering a rogue nation, all while managing violent extremists," Wilson said during a speech <a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/09/17/648809500/air-force-seeks-huge-increase-in-planes-personnel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at an annual Air Force gathering</a>. "Each of those missions relies heavily on America's Air Force."</p><h2>A very long shopping list</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force/Senior Airman John Linzmeier</span></p><p class="caption">Fully armed Aircraft from the 18th Wing during the no-notice exercise.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Air Force in its presentation did not lay out a request to buy any specific plane, but details about where it feels it needs to grow offer clues about who the top beneficiaries would be.</p><p>The service would like to add five bomber squadrons to its existing nine, which would imply adding about 60 additional Northrop Grumman-made (<a href="https://www.fool.com/quote/nyse/northrop-grumman/noc">NYSE:NOC</a>) <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/10/27/news-flash-northrop-grumman-wins-the-b-3-bomber-co.aspx">B-21 bombers</a> at a unit cost of more than $500 million apiece.</p><p>There is also plans to boost refueling squadrons from 40 to 54, a potential addition of more than 150 Boeing (<a href="https://www.fool.com/quote/nyse/boeing/ba">NYSE:BA</a>) <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/09/09/boeings-troubled-tanker-is-1-step-closer-to-enteri.aspx">KC-46 planes</a> carrying a unit cost of $147 million apiece.</p><p>Fighters would also see an uptick, with seven additional squadrons proposed over the existing 55. That's upwards of 84 additional planes in an area that lately has been dominated by Lockheed Martin(<a href="https://www.fool.com/quote/nyse/lockheed-martin/lmt">NYSE:LMT</a>), <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/09/07/heres-lockheed-martins-plan-for-the-next-us-fighte.aspx">builder</a> of both the F-22 and the F-35.</p><p>There is also a need for 22 additional command and control and intelligence squadrons on top of the 40 already in place. That's likely to create an opportunity for a variety of additional aircraft, including several unmanned systems made by Northrop, privately held General Atomics, and others.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.af.mil/photos/media_search.asp?q=e-4&amp;btnG.x=0&amp;btnG.y=0">USAF photo/Tech. It seems likely that the only way the Air Force will be able to even come close to the squadron levels it is proposing will be to keep older planes in service longer.</p><p>That's good news for the contractors that manufactured the planes, as well as for spare part vendors including TransDigm, which generates about 30% of total sales from the Pentagon and has a portfolio of proprietary parts.</p><h2>A healthy dose of skepticism is required</h2><p>The massive acquisition costs listed above should provide reason to doubt whether the Air Force plan will ever fully be implemented. The added non-equipment expense that would be required could be an even bigger obstacle.</p><p>Right now the Air Force spends about $53 billion annually on aircraft operations, training, and recruiting, Todd Harrison, defense budget analyst at the think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, <a href="https://twitter.com/ToddHarrisonDC/status/1040667487313035265" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said on Twitter</a>.<a href="https://twitter.com/ToddHarrisonDC/status/1040667487313035265" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></p><p>Increasing the number of squadrons in the range that Wilson is contemplating would add about $13 billion annually to those operating costs, he estimated.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force/Staff Sgt. Michael Battles</span></p><p class="caption">A 340th Aircraft Maintenance Unit maintainer, adjusts the window of a KC-135 Stratotanker boom pod before a flight in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, July 3, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The expansion would also require thousands of additional pilots at a time when the Air Force is short the number it needs to manage its current force.</p><p>With commercial airlines, which tend to pay more than the military, also facing pilot shortfalls, the Air Force would have to either dramatically overhaul its wage rates or invest significant additional sums in recruiting and training to come anywhere staffing the bigger targets.</p><p>Over time a greater use of unmanned systems could help ease the crunch, with Kratos Defense &amp; Security, among others, <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/04/20/where-will-kratos-defense-security-solutions-inc-b.aspx">developing drones that could be actual warfighters</a> and not just support vehicles<a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/04/20/where-will-kratos-defense-security-solutions-inc-b.aspx"></a>.</p><p>But those technologies are still far from certain, and if they do work as planned will at least initially be deployed to fill existing manpower gaps instead of for expansion.</p><h2>Buy the trend, not the specifics</h2><p>Wilson's wish list should be treated as such, and investors shouldn't rush out and buy stocks based on an assumption that the Pentagon will quickly go shopping.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force/Staff Sgt. Michael McCormick, 27th Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Aerospace Maintenance technician, and Airman First Class Tanner Ballard, 27 SOAMXS Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice, demonstrate how to inspect an engine intake, at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, September 28, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Like the White House calls to <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/01/01/pentagon-wants-a-355-ship-navy-but-who-will-build.aspx">dramatically expand the US Navy</a>, the amount of equipment added is likely to fall well short of what is requested.</p><p>But the Air Force's ambitious agenda is unlikely to be ignored, and lawmakers are generally accommodative toward calls to strengthen the military. The takeaway for investors should be that the Air Force is likely to grow over time, and top contractors to the service including Lockheed, Boeing, and Northrop should benefit.</p><p>Shares of Northrop and Lockheed Martin are up 87.12% and 69.55%, respectively, over the past three years on enthusiasm over growing defense budgets. (Boeing, thanks to its high-flying commercial business, is up 170% during that time.)</p><p>Given the companies all trade at multiples to earnings well above 10-year averages, there's no reason to jump into defense shares based on this Air Force wish list that so far lacks funding.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>(US Air Force photo by Scott M. Defense is a long-horizon industry, with contracts playing out over several years.</p><p>The post-Cold War lull challenged valuations and created fears of a "new normal," but that period is increasingly looking like a blip in the long-term trend toward increased military spending.</p><p>The US Air Force, perhaps the most important single customer of Lockheed, Northrop, or even Boeing, has made it clear it expects to spend a lot on equipment over the next decade.
