<ul class="summary-list"><li>Lindsay Lohan rushed to transform into the Plastics version of Cady on the set of "Mean Girls."</li><li>According to a new behind-the-scenes book, the director "fought to stop her from curling her hair too early."</li></ul><p>"<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mean-girls-musical-movie-cast-characters-new-vs-old-2024-1">Mean Girls</a>" star <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mean-girls-remake-lindsay-lohan-cameo-explained-2024-1">Lindsay Lohan</a> was so eager to transform into one of the Plastics that she got in trouble for curling her hair too soon, according to a behind-the-scenes book.</p><p>"So Fetch: The Making of 'Mean Girls' (and Why We're Still So Obsessed With It)," written by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and released on Tuesday, gives fans an inside look into how the hit 2004 movie came together.</p><p>Chapter five focuses on the transformations the stars underwent to embody <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mean-girls-biggest-differences-2004-movie-remake-2024-1">the Plastics</a>, the trio of glamorous high schoolers played by Rachel McAdams (Regina George), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners), and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith). This also included Lohan's character, Cady Heron, a formerly homeschooled teen who becomes part of their clique and morphs into a superficial Plastic as she spends more time with them.</p><div type="image" title="Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and Rachel McAdams in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot;" height="1614" width="2880" msid="106940521" hostid="261" sizebytes="107176"></div><p>According to the book, which included interviews with cast and crew members, hair was integral to the storytelling. Director Mark Waters was specific about how it should appear, to the extent that the film's hairstylist, Carol Hartwick, was always nearby to make adjustments.</p><p>Just as Cady succumbs to the Plastics' emphasis on appearance, Lohan was more than ready to ditch her character's plaid shirts and ponytail to dress as one of the cool girls.</p><p>"Lohan would constantly rush to wear pieces meant for later in the timeline or vamp up her hair when it was still supposed to be straighter and simpler," Armstrong wrote. "The wardrobe, hair, and makeup people had to keep pulling her back. Waters constantly fought to stop her from curling her hair too early in Cady's metamorphosis."</p><div type="image" title="Lindsay Lohan in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 7" height="1622" width="2878" msid="106940523" hostid="261" sizebytes="75962"></div><p>Waters explained to Lohan why her hair needed to be straight and simple until Cady's transformation later in the movie. But still, the "Parent Trap" star wanted her hair curled.</p><p>"Once, they shot half a scene with her hair straight, as planned," Armstrong wrote. "They broke for lunch. She snuck off and curled her hair. When they resumed shooting, Waters was pulling his own hair out, though he maintained his usual calm. 'Lindsay, what are you doing?' he asked. 'We can't shoot the scene with your hair curled. We already shot half without it.'"</p><p>Lohan started crying, resulting in the makeup team needing an hour to get her camera ready. Waters, who previously worked with Lohan for the 2003 "Freaky Friday" remake, reportedly didn't fume over the incident.</p><p>"She is watchable," Waters said, "but she's also a handful. The movie wouldn't be successful without that energy."</p><p>Even though the timing of Cady's transformation was out of Lohan's control, the actor did get to influence her character's hairstyle. According to the book, she took inspiration from Jennifer Aniston, whose <a target="_blank" href="https://people.com/style/jennifer-aniston-not-fan-the-rachel-haircut-friends-people-pop-cultured/">haircut</a> on "Friends" was well-known and sought after in the '90s.</p><p>"As Lohan's character transitioned from regular girl to Queen Bee, she asked for hair that looked like that of the ultimate hair icon at the time, Jennifer Aniston," Armstrong wrote. "Lohan's would be a longer, redder version, with extensions, of Aniston's famous layered look as Rachel Green on 'Friends.'"</p>

Lindsay Lohan got in trouble filming 'Mean Girls' because she kept trying to look Plastic before Cady's transformation

<ul class="summary-list"><li>It's been nearly 20 years since "Mean Girls" came out, but the film's style is as iconic as ever. </li><li>The original film's costume designer said she crafted the looks using real-life inspiration. </li></ul><p>When it comes to style, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/interesting-facts-you-didnt-know-about-mean-girls-2019-11">"Mean Girls"</a> is a more accurate depiction of high school in the early 2000s than you might've imagined.</p><p>Mary Jane Fort, the costume designer who worked on the original 2004 "Mean Girls," recently spoke to Insider about the inspiration behind the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mean-girls-the-most-iconic-fashion-looks">iconic looks from the film</a>. While she said she eventually turned to early 2000s icons like Paris Hilton to take the movie's fashion to the next level, Fort started her process by looking at what young people were actually wearing to school at the time.</p><p>"I start with what is real," Fort, who has worked in the costume<strong> </strong>design field for over 30 years, said. "No matter what it is, even if it's vampires, you go as realistic as you can."</p><div type="image" title="mean girls janis and damien" height="800" width="1200" msid="105052306" hostid="261"></div><p>For "Mean Girls," which was filmed in Toronto, Canada, but set in Evanston, Illinois, Fort said her two-month research process began with pouring through the yearbooks of local high schools. From there, she got a feel for what students who belonged to different social cliques and activity groups wore as well as what was perceived as cool.</p><p>"I started looking at high-school yearbooks and looking at different clubs and different parts of what makes up a high-school class," Fort said.</p><p>Though real high-school students formed the basis of Fort's research, she also looked for inspiration elsewhere to make things brighter and bolder. </p><h2>Fort specifically wanted to 'heighten the reality' of the Plastics</h2><p>Fort said she wanted to make sure that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mean-girls-ages-vs-real-life">the Plastics in "Mean Girls,</a>" consisting of Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), weren't just any run-of-the-mill, high-school "It Girls."</p><p>"We wanted to sort of heighten the reality of it, and so that's where I took a turn and wanted to make the colors brighter because the Plastics were something that everyone wanted, wanted to be, and wanted to touch," Fort said.</p><div type="image" title="regina george mean girls" height="681" width="800" msid="105052307" hostid="261"></div><p>Of course, there was no one quite as glamorous as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/paris-hilton-says-she-had-dozens-of-wedding-dresses-ready-2023-10">Paris Hilton</a> in the early 2000s, which is why Fort said she used the style icon as inspiration for the Plastics. </p><p>According to Fort, Hilton is basically the original influencer.</p><p>"We didn't have the influencers that we have now," she said. But even though social media wasn't what it is today, Fort said that Hilton was the "bright and shiny" celebrity that people in the early 2000s aspired to be like.</p><p>"I did study Paris Hilton a good bit," she added.</p><div type="image" title="Paris Hilton holding a mobile phone." height="2062" width="3000" msid="105052308" hostid="261"></div><p>And Fort was inspired by one final, and more unconventional, source: candy.</p><p>She recalled visiting New York during her research and going to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/candy-store-has-bar-with-candy-cocktails-2017-5">Dylan's Candy Bar</a> location, which was lined with sweet treats in a rainbow assortment of colors.</p><p>"That's where I took my color palette," Fort said. "I had visited in New York and was just overwhelmingly delighted with all the colors and all the sparkly, sugary things."</p><p>The Plastics, who appear sweet on the surface but are the film's villains, mirror the candy because they are meant to look enticing but can cause damage in the long run, Fort said.</p><p>"If you eat all that stuff, you're not going to be so delighted," she added.</p>

So, the essence of the story is likely to remain the same. Will they save the farm, get the big story, and keep from falling for each other? Find out on "Christmas Scoop," starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Jennie Garth.</p><p>OK, this isn't a real movie. But if you've ever heard of the Hallmark Channel, you can picture the whole thing.</p><p>The cable network is set to release the first of 33 original Christmas movies - most featuring a pair of recognizable TV stars meeting cute near the mistletoe - this weekend - before we're even done with Halloween.</p><p>Hallmark, it seems, has never stopped saying Merry Christmas, and it's how the network, owned by Crown Media, is defying every trend in the media business. It has milked the Christmas stories to consistently deliver strong live ratings (meaning people watch when the movies are broadcast, not later, say, over the internet), while its rivals grapple with cable <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/cord-cutting">cord-cutting</a> and competition from streaming services.<br><br>If you aren't familiar, here are two examples of the kinds of films we're talking about:</br></br></p><ul><li>2015's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5133572/">A Crown for Christmas"</a> starring Danica McKellar ("The Wonder Years") as a recently fired New York exec who ends up working for, and falling for, a prince during Christmas.</li><li>2016's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5676118/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl">"A Wish for Christmas"</a> starring Lacey Chabert ("Mean Girls") as a woman granted a wish by Santa Claus, a wish that expires in 48 hours.</li></ul><p>"Their movies are as comforting as programming can be. You can grab a blanket, enjoy a glass of wine, and know the movie will have a happy ending," said Brad Krevoy, a producer who has worked on theatrical movies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "Threesome."</p><h2>Very traditional media</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f363343e9d25d4038b61bc-1288/unnamed-13.jpg" alt="unnamed 13" data-mce-source="Hallmark" data-mce-caption="Holly Robinson Peete and Hallmark's Happy the Dog"><p class="source"><span>Hallmark</span></p><p class="caption">Holly Robinson Peete and Hallmark's Happy the Dog.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>People are canceling cable subscriptions and ditching live TV for Netflix, Amazon, and other streaming apps.</p><p>Cable networks are striving to produce original prestige series at a time when there are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fx-john-landgraf-apple-peak-tv-2017-1">upwards of 500 on the air</a>. At the same time, mid-tier cable networks are struggling, and some, like Esquire, have disappeared. Everyone in media is trying to figure out where they fit on Facebook and Snapchat.</p><p>Not Hallmark.</p><p>"It's weird," said director Ron Oliver, who's worked on numerous Hallmark projects and logged time on Nickelodeon's "Goosebumps" in the 1990s. "With Hallmark, you actually turn on the TV at 8 p.m. and watch collectively. It speaks to a real need."</p><p>In 2016, Hallmark movies attracted over 2 million live viewers, though by November and December those numbers spiked to 4 million, according to Nielsen. The rating record was set by Candace Cameron Bure's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4180032/">Christmas Under Wraps</a>," in 2014, and it&#xa0;actually just <em>added</em> a third cable network, Hallmark Drama, on top of its core network and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries - all part of the&#xa0;<span>Crown Media Family Networks division of Hallmark Cards</span>.<br><br>Crown Media president and CEO Bill Abbot chalks the success up to a commitment to the formula.</br></br></p><p>"The business has been so driven by trying to hit the home run, trying to replicate the success of 'The Walking Dead,'" he said. "Hits are very hard to find. That's a very risky strategy. And it's detrimental to the cable industry.</p><p>"People don't know what they are going to get from original channels," Abbot added. "That's what's driving a lot of the decline in audience."</p><h2>Taking back Christmas</h2><p>The original cable Christmas movie wasn't Hallmark's baby. Rather in the mid-1990s, ABC Family kicked off the craze with its "25 Days of Christmas" franchise. That led to classics such as 2007's <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Holiday-Handcuffs-Melissa-Joan-Hart/dp/B001BAWKQU">"Holiday in Handcuffs"</a> featuring Melissa Joan Hart&#xa0;taking&#xa0;Mario Lopez hostage while he steals her heart- of course at Christmas time.</p><p>Though the Hallmark channel launched in 2001, Crown Media had made <a href="http://deadline.com/2011/05/hallmark-hall-of-fame-ends-on-cbs-129410/">TV movies for decades for networks like CBS</a>. But around 2011, as ABC Family (now called Freeform) leaned into targeting teens, Crown went after Christmas in a bigger way.</p><p>"We did look at what '25 Days of Christmas' had become in people's minds and said, 'Wait a minute. We have a brand and a hundred-year legacy,'" Michelle Vicary, EVP of programming&#xa0;<span>&amp; network program publicity, Crown Media Family Networks,&#xa0;</span>said. "We should lean into that as much as we can and do more of it."</p><p>It started paying off immediately. Now Hallmark produces movies tied to Valentine's Day, fall harvest season, June weddings, and summer holidays. But starting October 27, it's pretty much all Christmas movies for the rest of the year.</p><p>"People started to say things to us, like, 'I turn in on right after Halloween and don't turn it off until New Year's," Vicary said.</p><p>"In this day and age, with the multitude of programs, the notion of a strict adherence to one's brand - that's friendly, inviting, and welcoming - is a huge plus," said Bruce Vinokour, a television agent at the Creative Artists Agency.</p><h2>A feel-good Blumhouse</h2><p>How exactly will Hallmark make 87 original movies this year, including 33 Christmas movies?</p><p>The company is known for being disciplined and deliberate. Hallmark typically shoots movies over about three weeks for $2 million - the price of some individual TV episodes or, as Oliver put it, "the catering budget for Transformers."<br><br>The network is almost like the Yuletide version of the much-admired <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blumhouse-productions-get-out-split-2017-2">low-budget horror studio Blumhouse</a>.</br></br></p><p>Most movies are shot in Canada, where Hallmark gets tax breaks and other benefits from using local production crews. Vancouver is the biggest outlet, given its wintry milieu, though Hallmark has made movies in Toronto, Montreal, and, in some cases, Romania.</p><p>The timing is often tight. Actress Lacey Chabert said she shot a movie last summer that aired four weeks later.</p><p>When Business Insider talked to director <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0646987/">Ron Oliver </a>in mid-October, he was in postproduction on <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/the-christmas-train">"The Christmas Train"</a> (Danny Glover, Dermot Mulroney), which is scheduled to run in late November. Oliver was still writing "Reindeer Games," which he's shooting in November for a December airdate.</p><p>"It's literally down to the wire," he said. That's up from less than $300 million in 2012.</p><p>To put that in context, Lifetime's revenue is roughly double that of Hallmark's, but net operating revenue from 2012 to 2016 has remained relatively flat, $876.4 million to $875.4 million, Kagan estimates.</p><p>Advertisers have noticed Hallmark's ascendancy.</p><p>"If you look at cable in general, there are ratings declines all over the place. And every fourth quarter they are growing. It's kind of incredible," said Keri Feeley, SVP and group partner of integrated investment at the ad-buying firm UM.</p><p>Marketers are particularly drawn to Hallmark because the content is considered safe. And for viewers, "They always find actors that remind you of your childhood," said Feeley.</p><h2>Familiar faces</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59f23671bcf93d46628b4615-686/unnamed-7.jpg" alt="unnamed 7" data-mce-source="Hallmark Channel" data-mce-caption="Lacey Chabert stars in &amp;quotThe Sweetest Christmas&quot;"><p class="source"><span>Hallmark Channel</span></p><p class="caption">Lacey Chabert stars in "The Sweetest Christmas."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>There's something of a debate over who is the record holder for most Hallmark Christmas movie appearances - between Candace Cameron Bure (who became a star on "Full House"), Lori Loughlin (also from "Full House"), and Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five" and "Mean Girls"). Though Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper from "The Wonder Years") is coming on strong, said Vicary.</p><p>"It's tough to say," Vicary said. "Lori Loughlin owned August."</p><p>Chabert did her first Hallmark movie in 2010: <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/elevator-girl">"Elevator Girl"</a> (a guy and a girl get stuck in an elevator). Her first Christmas movie was "<a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/matchmaker-santa">Matchmaker Santa</a>," and she estimates she's done eight or nine since.</p><p>"The way their company works is a family and it mirrors their product," she told Business Insider. "They really care about what they're putting out."</p><p>Still, Chabert said that the shooting schedule is like "boot camp" in that you "eat, breath, and sleep the movie."</p><p>"It's intense - it's hard to make a movie in 15 days. They know what they are doing," she told Business Insider.</p><p>Chabert said that for whatever reason, most of her Christmas movies have been shot in the summer. <br><br>"That's fine by me," she said. "I've gotten used to being really hot and sweating in my boots."</br></br></p><h2>Make it snow</h2><p>One thing that can't be different: "You have to have snow," Vicary said. That's nonnegotiable.</p><p>Visual-effects expert <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5431809/">Luc Benning</a> has worked on several Hallmark projects. There are a few ways to make snow happen, even in August. Options include using:</p><ul><li>snow blankets (which look like car-seat cushions, Benning says)</li><li>fire-retardant foam (increasingly popular)</li><li>a papier-mâché-like product called a <a href="http://www.flash-sfx.cz/en/rental-shop/produkt/krendl-snow-system">Krendl</a>&#xa0;(tough to clean up)</li><li>crushed limestone (increasingly popular out West)</li><li>ice shavings from ice blocks</li><li>snow from the machines that ski slopes use (extremely heavy)</li></ul><p>"The past couple of years Hallmark's really liked the look of the foam," said Benning, who often works on four and five Hallmark movies back to back. Sometimes, that means soapy bubbles.</p><p>Oliver said he was shooting a scene with Candace Cameron Bure that was supposed to be during a blizzard. So he used a machine that blew soapy bubbles into the air that looked like snow during close-up shots. "He hair was literally concrete," said Oliver. "And she had soap in her mouth."</p><p>Plus, because of the noise that the machine made, the actress had to reshoot her dialogue later "with the same emotion and cadence," he said. Oliver has a way of helping his actors deal: stops at the <a href="http://shamefultikiroom.com/">Shameful Tiki Room</a> bar in Vancouver.</p><h2>Christmas future</h2><p>As Hallmark pushes its original output to the limit, the question will become, how do you not run out of ideas?</p><p>One way to keep things moving is by doing sequels: <a href="http://www.hallmarkmoviesandmysteries.com/finding-father-christmas">"Finding Father Christmas"</a> in 2016 has led to this year's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6958760/">"Engaging Father Christmas</a>" (and eventually "Marrying Father Christmas").</p><p>"My biggest challenge is finding good scripts and good writers," Abbot added. To help, <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/hallmark-publishing/write-for-us">the company has launched a book division that will serve as something of a farm team for future movies</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, programming chief Vicary said she's already talking to her team about projects for Christmas 2018.</p><p>For his part, Oliver said he's often wondered if he'll ever end up Christmas'd out. But then he gets together with his family and gets right back into the spirit.<br><br>"I always have this huge meltdown on Christmas Eve," he said. "But I love it. It's really about the core idea of people getting together. The Hallmark Channel is defying every trend in media by owning Christmas

<p class="drop-cap">In discussions about the definitive high-school movies of the 2000s, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/mean-girls">Mean Girls</a>" reigns supreme.</p><p>No other teen film is packed with so many quotable lines that people still reference almost two decades later: "She doesn't even go here;" "'You can't sit with us;" "Get in loser, we're going shopping" - to name a few. It's a film so prevalent in pop culture that it even has its own day (It's October 3rd).</p><p>"<keyword id="33565" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mean-Girls">Mean Girls</keyword>," written by <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/tina-fey">Tina Fey</a>, is centered on a naive 16-year-old named Cady Heron (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/lindsay-lohan">Lindsay Lohan</a>), who learned new rules about the girl world when she enrolled at North Shore, a fictional high school in Evanston, Illinois, after being home-schooled her whole life.</p><p>On her first day, Cady befriended two outcasts named Janis (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/lizzy-caplan">Lizzy Caplan</a>) and Damian (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/daniel-franzese">Daniel Franzese</a>) and caught the attention of the popular girls, known as the Plastics, led by queen bee Regina George (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/rachel-mcadams">Rachel McAdams</a>).</p><p>The film, inspired by Fey's high-school experience and a parenting book about helping teens survive cliques, could not have been better cast. But at the time, McAdams and Lohan seemed like odd picks to play, well, mean girls.</p><p>"We didn't know if the <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> was going to be good when we were making it," Franzese said. "'We were like, 'Are we making a cute movie or is this as bad-ass as we think?' We couldn't really figure it out."</p><p>In honor of the 17th anniversary of "Mean Girls," <a href="https://www.insider.com/">Insider</a> spoke with Franzese about his experience making the movie, why he leans into its popularity, and how the film was ahead of its time.</p><div type="image" title="Lacey Chabert, Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, and Amanda Seyfried in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot;" height="1610" width="2150" msid="82332379" hostid="261"></div><hr /><h2>Franzese said he nearly wasn't cast in the role as Damian and Jonathan Bennett wasn't originally cast to portray heartthrob Aaron Samuels</h2><p class="drop-cap">No one could have predicted the cultural impact of "Mean Girls" when it was released, but Franzese had a good feeling about the movie before he even landed his role. </p><p>During second-round auditions with Fey and director Mark Waters, <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/amanda-seyfried">Amanda Seyfried</a>, who was having a callback for Regina, asked Fey to weigh in on which color shirt to wear for her screen test: maroon or tan.</p><p>Overhearing the conversation, Franzese leaned over and said, "I'd go with the Merlot."</p><p>The quip may have counted more than his actual audition, which Franzese said "was OK," but "wasn't good." Luckily, Fey and the others in the room seemed to like the actor.</p><div type="image" title="Lindsay Lohan, Lizzy Caplan, and Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot;" height="1611" width="2148" msid="82332381" hostid="261"></div>"They thought that me as a person was right for Damian, which is funny because I was going in and acting more like a character than myself, I thought," he said. <p>So despite a seemingly mediocre audition, Franzese was invited out to Los Angeles to have dinner with the cast and participate in the table read - but he still didn't have the part yet. The cast dinner was a mix of "so many personalities at the table," he said, with everyone trying to make an impression.</p><blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper"><q class="pullquote-quotation">This table read was fire. Everybody was shooting bull's-eyes and I was trying so hard to land every joke.</q></blockquote><p>While a teenage Lohan was "gossiping about <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/hilary-duff">Hilary Duff</a> or whatever," Franzese said he was doing the most to bond with Caplan because casting director Marci Liroff was convinced that they'd become fast friends. At the table, there was also an actor who wasn't <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/jonathan-bennett">Jonathan Bennett,</a> tapped to portray heartthrob Aaron Samuels.</p><p>Franzese said that he's taking the identity of the actor to his grave. </p><p>"I'll never say," he said. "We've all collectively agreed that's the one thing we'll never tell because we don't want to shame the actor. There'll be a hundred articles about him and he's a good actor."</p><p>"You would know him though."</p><div type="image" title="Jonathan Bennett in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 2" height="1610" width="2150" msid="82332382" hostid="261"></div><p>Still, Franzese took comfort in seeing Lacey Chabert, who nabbed the role of gossiping Plastics member Gretchen Wieners with her big hair "full of secrets." The two had previously appeared in the 2002 movie "Hometown Legend."</p><p>The next day, Franzese, McAdams, and Seyfried were transported in a limo to the table read at the Paramount Picture's studio lot. He described the day as "really intense" because of the number of people there, including studio executives and A-listers who were called in as favors "to make the table really good."</p><p>"I've been to many table reads and I always feel like the best movies have the best table reads," Franzese said. "Whenever a movie didn't have a table read or the table read was meek, there were problems on set."</p><p>"This table read was fire. Everybody was shooting bull's-eyes and I was trying so hard to land every joke," the actor continued. "I was ready four lines before my lines to just land a joke."</p><p>Franzese's eagerness paid off: He made producer and "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/saturday-night-live">Saturday Night Live</a>" creator and "Mean Girls" producer Lorne Michaels do a spit take while delivering one of his one-liners.</p><div type="image" title="Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 4" height="1617" width="2157" msid="82332384" hostid="261"></div><p>But sitting next to Franzese was the original Aaron Samuels actor, who was failing to impress because of his nonchalant disposition. </p><p>"He had a baseball hat on and a scruffy beard and a Starbucks, like acting all Hollywood," Franzese said, explaining that the casting director and others kept suggesting that he take off his hat, which he refused to do. </p><p>So while Franzese was ready to deliver lines and react to the dialogue from other characters, "dude next to me was just acting too cool for school."</p><p>About a week and a half later, Franzese was told he got the part and would leave for Toronto two days later to film.</p><p>Meanwhile, the unnamed Aaron Samuels actor was fired and Bennett stepped in to take over. Franzese learned of the casting change when Bennett showed up at the airport.</p><p>"Heads roll every production, so it wasn't a huge surprise," Franzese said. </p><hr /><h2>Franzese said he came up with Damian's most iconic lines, including "I want my pink shirt back!"</h2><p class="drop-cap">Franzese has fond memories of filming in Toronto - from getting iPods to "backpacks full of all kinds of swag" inspired by the film.</p><p>"They made protein bars with the Kälteen Bars covers. They just made it really cute," he added.</p><p>The "friendly" cast members stayed at spacious apartments and bonded by seeing Radiohead together. Franzese even visited Niagara Falls with Caplan and Bennett upon arriving.</p><p>Aside from Lohan, who rose to fame as a child actor playing twins in the 1998 movie "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-parent-trap-cast-where-are-they-now-photos-2018-7">The Parent Trap</a>," most of the actors portraying teens weren't well-known. For Seyfried, who's now an <a href="https://www.insider.com/oscars-2021-nominations-winners-list-2021-3">Oscar-nominated actress</a>, her role as ditsy Karen Smith marked her film debut. </p><div type="image" title="Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and Rachel McAdams in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot;" height="1611" width="2148" msid="82332385" hostid="261"></div><p>Conversely, many of the actors playing adult roles were "SNL" veterans: Fey (math teacher Ms. Norbury), Ana Gasteyer (Cady's mom), <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/amy-poehler">Amy Poehler</a> (Regina's "cool mom"), and Tim Meadows (Principal Duvall). </p><p>"I remember Tina didn't fly," Franzese recalled of the rehearsal period. "So, she drove up in a limo every Monday or something from New York. And meanwhile, Ana Gasteyer and <keyword id="583508" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amy-Poehler">Amy Poehler</keyword> were flying in on Lorne's jet after every 'SNL' on Mondays."</p><p>It was during rehearsals that Franzese came up with one of Damian's most iconic lines: "I want my pink shirt back!" He yells the remark while driving past Cady outside her house party where he wasn't invited.</p><p>Originally, he wanted to end the line with "b----," but Waters suggested saying it twice like George Costanza from "Seinfeld" in an angry tone in order to avoid the expletive. </p><p>"After a while, they started trusting me and giving me freedom," Franzese said, explaining that it meant a lot because on "a studio film back in the day, every minute costs so much money."</p><div type="image" title="Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 4" height="1617" width="2157" msid="82332387" hostid="261"></div><p>While there wasn't much room for improvisation because the script was already so funny, Franzese also snuck in the "don't look at me" remark during Damian's performance of <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/christina-aguilera">Christina Aguilera</a>'s "Beautiful" at the winter talent show. The line, which he says to Ms. Norbury as she plays piano, was inspired by Aguilera saying the same phrase on the track recording.</p><p>The scene clearly benefited from Franzese's creativity, but it also wouldn't have been as funny if his character had performed another song, which could've happened.</p><p>"They weren't going to give us a release for the song," the actor said. "So they had a whole list of other songs for me to choose from, in which I chose either 'Out Here on My Own,' the Irene Cara song from 'Fame,' or I was going to sing 'One Moment in Time' by <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/whitney-houston">Whitney Houston</a>."</p><p>"But because my character was gay, Linda Perry, the writer of the song, agreed to let me sing it because she's queer."</p><div type="image" title="Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 2" height="1616" width="2154" msid="82332388" hostid="261"></div><hr /><h2>Damian was a boundary-pushing character for the LGBTQ+ community, and made Franzese more comfortable to be openly queer</h2><p class="drop-cap">Franzese, who <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2014/04/exclusive-actor-daniel-franzese-writes-a-touching-coming-out-letter-to-his-iconic-mean-girls-character-damian-214326/">came out as gay in 2014</a> around the time of the movie's 10th anniversary, said he was initially "afraid" to play an openly queer character like Damian. But the character was "remarkable" for the early 2000s. </p><p>"I was like, 'Wait a minute. He's funny, and he's a lead role, and he says all the best s---, and no one ever beats him up, and he doesn't have AIDS,'" Franzese said. </p><p>"It felt really forward-thinking for that time," he added. "I was really excited to do something that pushed the envelope, regardless of my own fear about how I felt. I was like, 'One day I'm going to be out and then they're going to look back and say, 'Look at how he played this awesome role that kind of pushed s---.'"</p><div type="image" title="Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 6" height="1610" width="2146" msid="82332389" hostid="261"></div><p>The first time Franzese realized the true impact of a character like Damian was when he filmed the movie "Kill Theory" in New Orleans in 2008. During his downtime, he went to a gay club called Oz New Orleans on the famous Bourbon Street.</p><p>"I was kind of sneaking away from my current cast because I didn't want them to know I was gay," Franzese said, adding, "And the bouncer started crying when he saw me. He was just like, 'You don't know what it meant as a big person.'"</p><p>Franzese would go onto truly grasp the full impact of Damian on the LGBTQ+ community when he received a letter from a fan around the 10th anniversary.</p><p>The letter began: "I don't know if you're gay or not. It doesn't matter. But when I was in eighth grade, I was beat up for being chubby and tortured for being a sissy. And then your movie came out and in ninth grade, on the first day of my freshman year, the popular senior girls were like, 'You're like Damian, come sit with us.'"</p><div type="image" title="Daniel Franzese in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 3" height="1617" width="2157" msid="82332390" hostid="261"></div><p>Reading the opening lines caused Franzese to re-evaluate how he was living his life.</p><p>Although he wasn't openly gay in Hollywood, he publicly supported marriage equality and participated in protests regarding California's Prop 8 (a ban on same-sex marriage that was passed in 2008, but overturned and ruled unconstitutional in 2010).</p><p>The actor said that letter was "so impactful" because growing up as a pop-culture fan and cinephile, he didn't see himself "represented in a positive light on-screen."</p><p>"I can't find another chubby gay teen that is so significant in cinema history before that," Franzese said of his "Mean Girls" character. "It was like, 'Oh my God, I played this thing that was a breakthrough.' I didn't even realize it as it was happening. I was just being me."</p><hr /><h2>'Anything that anyone ever made fun of me for in my life is a reason that I'm celebrated and paid now.'</h2><p class="drop-cap">More than a decade later, "Mean Girls" is still "fetch," as Gretchen would say. </p><p>"It was always a cool movie, but then you realize it's a classic after 10 years," Franzese said.</p><p>"Mean Girls" became such a hit that it spawned a (mostly forgotten) 2011 TV sequel, inspired a Broadway show, and sparked an upcoming film adaptation of the aforementioned musical. </p><p>The musical, written by Fey with music composed by her husband, Jeff Richmond, transformed the character of Damian into "a fully realized queer teen of today," which Franzese said probably "couldn't have been then." Grey Henson, who portrayed Damian on Broadway, even received a Tony nomination for best featured actor in a musical.</p><p>"Damian didn't even get a GLAAD award," Franzese said. "Look at how far we've come with this source material."</p><div type="image" title="Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried in &quot;Mean Girls.&quot; 2" height="1620" width="2878" msid="82332391" hostid="261"></div><p>As for people watching "Mean Girls" nowadays, Franzese hopes the main takeaway is "to be kind to one another."</p><p>"The one thing I love to say the most is: Anything that anyone ever made fun of me for in my life is a reason that I'm celebrated and paid now," he said.</p><p>"And the things that set you apart are really the things that make you get noticed."</p>

'Mean Girls' star Daniel Franzese reveals Tina Fey drove nearly 500 miles to the film's Toronto set because she 'didn't fly' and other secrets from the teen movie
