<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="12616995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="omicron-variant" source="Orion">Omicron variant</keyword> of the <keyword id="11893194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus" source="Orion">coronavirus</keyword> should technically be called the "Nu" variant, as it is the next letter in the Greek alphabet after the previously named variant, "Mu." </li><li>But officials at the World Health Organization skipped "Nu" because it sounded too much like "new." </li></ul><p>The World Health Organization on Friday labeled the new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/omicron-b11529-coronavirus-variant-of-concern-who-2021-11">Omicron variant of the coronavirus</a> one of concern after it was discovered in South Africa earlier in November. </p><p>The official name for the variant of the coronavirus is B.1.1.529, but the World Health Organization has used letters in the Greek alphabet to name the variant. <keyword id="6366244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="who" source="Orion">WHO</keyword> officials, according to a report from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/27/world/africa/omicron-covid-greek-alphabet.html">The New York Times</a>, settled on Omicron for the latest variant after they decided to skip both the Greek letters "Nu" and "Xi." </p><p>"'Nu' is too easily confounded with 'new,'" Tarik Jasarevic, a WHO spokesman told the Times on Saturday. "And 'Xi' was not used because it is a common last name."</p><p>So, officials settled on the next letter: "omicron." </p><p>He told the outlet that the naming process intends to avoid "causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups." </p><p>While the WHO <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/omicron-b11529-coronavirus-variant-of-concern-who-2021-11">labeled the variant one of "concern" on Friday</a>, officials have stressed that little about the variant is known.</p><p>"We don't know very much about this variant yet," Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on COVID-19, said at a briefing Thursday. "What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations, and the concern is that when you have so many mutations, it can have an impact on how the virus behaves."</p><p>Some right-wing figures <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-donald-trump-jr-who-naming-omicron-variant-xi-2021-11">criticized the WHO for excluding "Xi,"</a> which is the name of Chinese President Xi Jinping, even though the Greek letter and Chinese name are pronounced differently, as Insider previously reported.</p><p>"If the WHO is this scared of the Chinese Communist Party, how can they be trusted to call them out the next time they're trying to cover up a catastrophic global pandemic?" GOP Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said in a tweet.</p><p>Previously named variants of the coronavirus included the Greek letters "Alpha," "Beta," and "Gamma." Variants "Lamda," "Delta," and "Mu" were also named and considered variants of interest by the agency, as the Times reported. "Xi" and "Nu" were the only letters that have so far been skipped, he said.</p><p>In addition to the cumbersome official names of the variants, one researcher told the Times that Greek letters were valuable in naming the variants to avoid using the location where they were first discovered, which can be "stigmatizing and discriminatory," to the people who live in those places. </p><p>"From the very beginning of the pandemic, I remember people saying: 'We called it the Spanish flu. Why don't we call it the Wuhan coronavirus?'" Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan, told the Times. "The Spanish flu did not come from Spain. We don't know where it emerged from, but there's a very good possibility it emerged from the US."</p>

Texas Senator Ted Cruz tweeted.</p><p>Cruz responded to a tweet that suggested the WHO decided to skip Xi to "avoid stigmatizing a region."</p><p>Donald Trump Jr. also weighed in, tweeting: "As far as I'm concerned the original will always be the Xi variant."</p><p>Both echoed rhetoric common in right-wing circles that blames China for the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>Former President Trump and his allies have often referred to the virus as the "China virus."</p><p>Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Christmas said that the health body decided not to use Xi because it's a common last name in China.</p><p>The WHO chose not to use the name as its best practices for naming diseases suggest "avoiding causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional, &amp; ethnic groups," he said.</p><p>He said they also confirmed that Nu was not used because of its similarity to the word "new."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two <keyword id="12616985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="klm-royal-dutch-airlines" source="Orion">KLM Royal Dutch Airlines</keyword> flights from South Africa were held at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol due to new <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> restrictions relating to the <keyword id="12609897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="b-1-1-529" source="Orion">B.1.1.529</keyword> COVID-19 variant.</li><li>Passenger and Twitter user Paula Zimmerman has been live-posting her experience trying to enter the Netherlands. </li></ul><p>European countries have wasted no time locking down their borders in response to the threat of new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529, named the "Omicron" variant.  </p><p>Travel restrictions from the southern African countries where the variant has been detected are being implemented in countries like the UK and Netherlands, with travelers already being caught in the balance. </p><p>Two KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flights from South Africa to the Netherlands were temporarily barred from deplaning after touching down at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the airline confirmed to Insider. </p><p>The 11-hour flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg departed early Friday morning and arrived in Amsterdam later that morning, data from <a href="https://flightaware.com/live/flight/KLM598/history/20211125/2220Z/FACT/EHAM">FlightAware</a> shows. Dutch travel restrictions for South Africa were implemented at 12:00 p.m. Amsterdam time, according to KLM's <a href="https://www.klm.us/information/travel-alerts#latest-travel-alerts">website</a>, but the flights were still impacted. </p><p>"Passengers of two KL-flights (KL592 and KL598), although landed before 12 p.m., [were] not allowed to leave the aircraft after landing, by order of Dutch government and health organizations," the airline told Insider in a statement. </p><p>Travelers were eventually allowed into the terminal, where mandatory COVID-19 testing was performed before any were allowed to leave. A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/11/26/world/covid-vaccine-boosters-variant#a-times-correspondent-reports-from-a-plane-held-on-the-tarmac-in-amsterdam">New York Times</a> reporter on the KLM flight from Johannesburg said the wait on the aircraft was at least four hours. </p><p>Twitter user Paula Zimmerman posted a video from inside a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight from Cape Town, South Africa to Amsterdam that was prevented from deplaning after it landed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. </p><p>"The Johannesburg flight and our Cape Town flight cannot enter the Netherlands without any restrictions," Zimmerman <a href="https://twitter.com/paula63/status/1464176255742398470">recorded</a> the captain of her flight as saying. "I can imagine that you have several questions, as I have as well, but that is the situation we are facing."</p><p>Video updates from <a href="https://twitter.com/paula63">Zimmerman</a> showed that the flight was assigned a remote gate at Schiphol Airport, with passengers being led to shuttle busses that took them to the terminal. </p><p>"We're inside the terminal...at Schiphol Airport and everybody is waiting to get tested," Zimmerman said after arriving at a holding point in the airport.  "There's little social distancing going on as far as I can see it."</p><p>But the airport environment provided little reprieve or clarity on the status of whether passengers would be allowed to enter the Netherlands or continue on their onward journeys. An airport spokesperson told the <a href="https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/26/passengers-two-klm-flights-south-africa-stuck-schiphol">NL Times</a> that passengers were isolated from other Schiphol Airport passengers and that the GGD Kennemerland, a public health organization, is tasked with testing passengers.</p><p>"People are getting more and more anxious, they want to get tested, they want to go home, and how long this is going to take: we don't know," Zimmerman reported from a <a href="https://twitter.com/paula63/status/1464247460377804843">video</a> taken inside Schiphol Airport. </p><p>Zimmerman's <a href="https://twitter.com/paula63/status/1464266010165399556">most recent update</a>, at around 5 p.m. in Amsterdam, stated that passengers were in the process of being tested even after hours of waiting. </p><p>"It's now 5 o'clock at Schiphol Airport and the testing should have been done by now but that is definitely not the case, there is still quite a long queue," Zimmerman said, noting that passengers are unsure what to do after they receive their results. "The people are getting more and more upset, and they're yelling and they want food. Apart from that, everything is fine." </p><p><a href="https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/26/passengers-two-klm-flights-south-africa-stuck-schiphol">NL Times</a> had reported testing was expected to be completed by 4:30 p.m. local time with results expected to be available by 8:30 p.m. local time. Schiphol Airport did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about the conditions within the terminal. </p><p>The Netherlands has a history of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/klm-cancels-long-haul-flights-after-netherlands-travel-restrictions-2021-1">imposing strict travel restrictions in an effort to prevent additional COVID-19 outbreaks</a>. In January, restrictions were announced that require travelers to obtain a negative result from a PCR test conducted within 72 hours of a flight's departure as well as a rapid test result from no later than four hours prior to departure to the Netherlands. </p><p>And the European Union is already looking to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/europe-considers-southern-africa-flight-ban-new-coronavirus-variant-2021-11">cease flights from southern African countries impacted by the new variant</a>.</p><p>"All <keyword id="11940261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="air-travel" source="Orion">air travel</keyword> to these countries should be suspended," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen <a href="https://twitter.com/vonderleyen/status/1464236651077640197?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1464236651077640197%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Feurope-considers-southern-africa-flight-ban-new-coronavirus-variant-2021-11">said</a>. "They should be suspended until we have a clear understanding about the danger posed by this new variant, and travelers returning from this region should respect strict quarantine rules."</p><p>A total of 12 flights were scheduled for November 26 operating directly from southern Africa — including South Africa and Namibia — to Europe were scheduled for November 26, according to Cirium data. Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Botswana do not have direct flights to Europe. </p><p>Other carriers also offer connections between southern African countries and Europe. </p>

The homes are stunning to see from sidewalks, but staying in one is even more immersive.</p><p><a href="https://www.centralparkbandb.com/">Central Park Bed and Breakfast</a> is a gorgeous converted Victorian that's easily accessible from downtown via public transit. But the <a href="https://www.sluggermuseum.com/">Louisville Slugger Factory</a> says it produces 1.8 million baseball bats a year and is the official bat of Major League Baseball.</p><p>Admission is $16 for adults and $9 for kids, and it requires advance tickets.
