The thoughts expressed are those of the author.</li></ul>Two weeks ago, a federal court in Washington, DC ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/05/05/federal-judge-vacates-cdcs-nationwide-eviction-moratorium/">overstepped its authority</a> in issuing a nationwide <keyword id="6356416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="eviction">eviction</keyword> moratorium and threw it out. The Justice Department announced that it would <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/551967-justice-dept-to-appeal-judges-order-vacating-cdc-eviction-moratorium">appeal the verdict</a> and the judge has allowed the moratorium to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/federal-court-vacates-us-eviction-moratorium-2021-05-05/">remain in place</a> while litigation continues. Still, the ruling has caused chaos across the country, as tenants grapple with the possibility of being evicted during the pandemic. In addition to the CDC moratorium, the country has been covered with a patchwork of state, county, and city-level bans on evictions. However, despite these protections - and thanks in part to a system of loopholes - thousands have been evicted over the last year of the pandemic. The chaos caused by this ruling has only reaffirmed the need for Congress to act and pass real relief for tenants. It's time to cancel rent.<h2>Eviction conviction</h2>Prior to the pandemic, evictions were already an epidemic in the United States - around 900,000 evictions take place in an average year, which is around four<a href="https://www.npr.org/2018/04/12/601783346/first-ever-evictions-database-shows-were-in-the-middle-of-a-housing-crisis"> evictions per minute</a> - and not everyone is affected equally. <a href="https://evictionlab.org/demographics-of-eviction/">According to statistics</a> collected by the Eviction Lab at Princeton University, Black, Latinx and women renters are disproportionately targeted by evictions and removed from their homes. Households with children, particularly <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/161578/landlords-target-mothers-eviction-crisis-covid">single mother households</a>, are especially at risk. <a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/mdesmond/files/social_forces-2013-desmond-303-27.pdf">A study</a> by the Eviction Lab shows that neighborhoods with higher amounts of children have increased evictions and that in court, tenants with children are more likely to receive a judgement ordering their eviction.Evictions are a disruptive force in the lives of Americans. Once someone is evicted, it is harder for them to rent in a similar neighborhood -even an eviction filing can have the same impact without the actual eviction. Since landlords <a href="https://www.texasobserver.org/evictions-texas-housing/">refuse to rent</a> to them, people who have been evicted are often <a href="https://www.publicsource.org/eviction-collateral-impact-displacement-employment-transit-school-mental-health/">pushed into</a> housing that is substandard, often in areas that are far from their workplaces, transit, and more. Even worse, some end up without a home at all. Merely being threatened with an eviction <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953617300102?via%3Dihub">is associated</a> with worse physical and mental health. Evictions can be blamed for some spread of the novel coronavirus too. They've been deemed an infection risk during the pandemic, which is what caused the CDC to institute the moratorium in the first place. <a href="https://www.vox.com/22160179/study-covid-19-eviction-moratoriums-deaths-cases-coronavirus-rent-stimulus-state-congress">A study</a> published in December found that 11,000 <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> deaths and 433,700 infections could have been prevented had states that lifted their eviction moratoriums kept them in place. When you don't have stable housing, you aren't able to stay at home and isolate from others. People who are evicted may go live with extended family, causing crowding in housing, which has been associated with COVID-19 cases and deaths. Similarly, a <a href="https://nlihc.org/resource/eviction-and-utility-disconnection-moratoriums-led-fewer-covid-19-cases-and-deaths">working paper</a> published in the National Bureau of Economic Research found that maintaining moratoriums reduced COVID infections by 3.8% and deaths by 11%. As cases, deaths, and hospitalizations decrease in the coming weeks, politicians may use this opportunity to declare the pandemic over and rescind the moratoriums. While the moratoriums need to be extended for the considerable future, they do not address the accumulating amount of unpaid rent that is piling up for those who are at risk of eviction. By this month, 7 million renters in America will collectively owe <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/special-report-giant-us-landlords-pursue-evictions-despite-cdc-ban-2021-04-23/">$40 billion</a> in unpaid rent - these unpaid fees will kick off a cascade of evictions once the moratoriums expire. This is why Congress needs to act to not only pass a lengthy moratorium but also to cancel outstanding rent so that tenants are not evicted once that moratorium expires.Representative Ilhan Omar has proposed a bill that would do just that. <a href="https://omar.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-ilhan-omar-introduces-bill-cancel-all-rent-and-mortgage-payments-during">The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act</a> wouldn't just cancel all missed rental and mortgage payments, it would also cause missed payments to have no effect on people's credit scores. Additionally, it would establish a fund that would allow landlords and mortgage holders to recuperate their losses, providing both owners and renters with a win-win situation. Since some landlords <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2020/11/20/landlords-use-intimidation-tricks-push-renters-out-amid-pandemic/6284752002/">have been evicting tenants</a> throughout this period, it would be important that such a fund reward landlords who have not evicted tenants and not compensate landlords' for losses in general. These provisions however only address temporary issues caused by the pandemic, and aren't a permanent solution to housing insecurity. <a href="https://www.vox.com/22264268/covid-19-housing-insecurity-housing-prices-mortgage-rates-pandemic-zoning-supply-demand">Housing</a> and <a href="https://fortune.com/2021/02/24/covid-rent-prices-spike-housing-crisis/">rental costs</a> across the country have skyrocketed in recent months and the pandemic has increased homelessness across the country; cities across the country are grappling with a rise in encampments, which has prompted <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/how-a-statewide-camping-ban-would-impact-austins-response-to-prop-b/">public backlash</a> and <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/03/25/981309861/los-angeles-sparks-tension-with-shutdown-of-echo-park-homeless-encampment">police-led sweeps.</a> Even before the pandemic, homelessness increased by 2% <a href="https://endhomelessness.org/new-report-shows-rise-in-homelessness-in-advance-of-covid-19-crisis/">from the year prior.</a> Researchers say that over the next four years, the economic impact from the pandemic is expected to <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/covid-19-will-cause-twice-as-much-homelessness-as-great-recession-study-finds-11610482333">increase homelessness by 49%.</a> When someone lacks secure housing, it makes it harder for them to access services like healthcare; considering that COVID-19 is now expected to become <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/05/09/world/covid-vaccine-coronavirus-cases">an endemic disease</a> that will require routine vaccination, a sizable homeless population that has precarious access to care should cause us concern. Rep. Omar's bill would also create funds to facilitate the public purchase of some rental properties - a good start. Further solutions have been proposed by housing advocates in the form of a "<a href="https://homesguarantee.com/">Homes Guarantee</a>", which among other things - like universal rent control - calls for 12 million social housing units to be built. When the pandemic hit more than a year ago, society made some quick rapid changes thinking the virus would only be with us for a while. Among these were programs like <a href="https://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/cdss-programs/housing-programs/project-roomkey">Project Roomkey</a>, which were designed to house people in hotels so they did not have to stay in congregate settings like homeless shelters. The funding for these programs is now running out, and our focus is now on "getting back to normal," but the virus and the problems it exacerbated will still be with us. The piece pushed back against <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/06/small-businesses-struggle-to-find-workers-as-pandemic-eases.html">a number</a> of <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/02/15/966376492/millions-are-out-of-a-job-yet-some-employers-wonder-why-cant-i-find-workers">recent articles</a> featuring business owners blaming unemployment insurance and government aid for contributing to laziness on the part of staff to not return to their jobs. Over and over again,<a href="https://eoinhiggins.substack.com/p/the-pandemic-gave-retail-employees"> the people I talked to</a> told me that while the aid provided security and support at a crucial time, they weren't passing up work just to sit around. Rather, they were looking at other options because of the service industry's terrible working conditions and low pay."The pandemic kind of stripped away the illusion of fairness and equity in the industry," said Sarah, a restaurant professional who is on her way out of the business and off to grad school. <h2>Reassessing things</h2>One of the first casualties of the pandemic last year was the service industry. With businesses forced to shut down due to health restrictions and few people willing to risk going out anyway, restaurants shuttered around the country and prepared to wait out the disease. Stimulus and aid packages passed by the federal government under both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden delivered relief. In addition to aid for businesses, programs like the $600 weekly bonus COVID unemployment payments that came with the first stimulus were a huge help to workers forced out of their jobs by the shutdown. It is true that for some service industry workers, what they made staying home was more than what they made at work. Indeed, that was part of the point of the pandemic aid; to keep people whole after losing their jobs to public health orders that were no fault of their own.And now, as things begin to open back up, people are pushing for these benefits to be cut off - despite lingering health concerns and ongoing aid."There's no reason for workers to come back to their old jobs earning the same poverty wages, especially since more than 100 million Americans remain unvaccinated, and there's still a stable safety net in place until autumn," writer and former restaurant worker Carl Gibson<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-workers-unemployment-insurance-benefits-covid-19-pandemic-poverty-wage-2021-4"> wrote for Insider</a> on May 2. "It's not that unemployed restaurant workers don't want jobs - we just have more options now."The time off prompted a reevaluation of not only their role in the business but industry practices in general. The service industry is a notoriously <a href="https://immigrantconnect.medill.northwestern.edu/blog/2017/06/26/cabales-within-the-next-ten-years-how-likely-are-working-conditions-to-improve-for-immigrants-in-the-restaurant-industry/">harsh</a> and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-reckoning-with-the-dark-side-of-the-restaurant-industry-1542044588">unforgiving</a> business that makes intense demands on staff for low pay and anarchic schedules. "I made more money on unemployment than I did working at the bar because they only gave me lunch shifts and I was part time," said Mark, a former bartender in New York. "They also over-staffed so there were fewer tips per person, I went from making $250-ish a week to a solid $600 a week from unemployment."But now that many of these workers have been able to step back from an industry where low pay and abusive practices were the norm these businesses face a challenge: improve working conditions or shut down.<h2>Tall Tales</h2>As the country has begun to reopen, some politicians and pundits are claiming that staff are uninterested in returning to work because they're lazy.<a href="https://twitter.com/RepDavidRouzer/status/1388138766599086080"> Signs on windows of shuttered businesses</a> or temporarily closed outlets claim that people aren't willing to come back because they'd rather sit back and do nothing. The media has helped spread this narrative, too. Articles from<a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/05/993433235/hotels-and-restaurants-that-survived-pandemic-face-new-challenge-staffing-shorta"> NPR</a>,<a href="https://video.foxnews.com/v/6253051274001#sp=show-clips"> Fox News</a>, and others have portrayed business owners as hard on their luck victims of circumstance who just can't catch a break. Workers - if they're included in the stories at all - are presented as shiftless, careless louts who aren't thinking of what's best for the company's bottom line. The reality is different, Lucas, a former Uber Eats driver, told me. "We're sick of being called lazy bums because we're sick of thankless, s----paying jobs," Lucas said.Rather, Lucas and other workers I spoke to said they are finally asserting themselves after years of mistreatment and becoming more selective and holding out for incentives-or even considering leaving altogether if things don't change. That's what happened two weeks ago at a Dollar General store in Eliot, Maine. Three out of four of the store's employees walked off the job and quit over the weekend due to their pay and the company's disrespectful mistreatment. Two of them, Brendt Erikson and Hannah Barr, put signs up on the store's door explaining why they quit, putting the blame squarely on Dollar General for the company's disrespectful treatment of employees and low wages.Erikson<a href="https://eoinhiggins.substack.com/p/worker-resistance-continues-as-maine"> told me</a> he wanted people to know that he and his comrades didn't leave their jobs because they were lazy. "You've probably seen on Twitter those signs on businesses that are closing due to understaffing because people don't want to work," Erikson said. "I have been thinking about those signs a lot lately. And I wanted to make a retort to those signs that actually told the truth of why people weren't going to work there anymore."<h2>Best practices?</h2>Despite claims that businesses are scrambling to attract workers, in many cases owners simply aren't offering incentives for employees to return to customer-facing positions - as Ary Reich, a floor member at the National Museum of Mathematica in New York, told me. "Less than a month after lockdown, after keeping us on to help them fix their broken website, they laid all eight of us off," Reich said. "Since then we've received emails letting us know we all can have our jobs back if we want them, but they are not interested in raising our pay."That shows a misunderstanding of the power dynamic at play now - workers are able to decline offers to come back to their jobs without losing income for the first time in decades. Bosses who expected new workers to crawl back begging for jobs no longer indisputably have the upper hand in negotiations. So their attempts to strong arm staff back into the poor conditions and insufficient pay are falling flat. Given this dynamic some restaurant owners are deciding to try and bring in newer, less experienced staff rather than rehire seasoned professionals - leading to more instability."A lot of folks I know in the fine dining world are struggling because many places closed during the pandemic and some are re-opening but instead of hiring back their old staff they are trying to hire new staff for less money or less front-of-house staff," said Earl. "Which means more front-of-house will do more work for the same or less money."How well that's working for the owners varies, but it seems clear from their complaints that staffing remains a concern.<h2>Lessons learned…. maybe</h2>But not everyone in the industry is willfully ignoring the new reality. Joseph Tiedmann, who works as an executive chef in New Orleans, told Eater's Gaby del Valle this month that restaurants need to figure out how to change the business to pay people better and make the business a more desirable destination for workers. "We need to make this an attractive business to work in," said Tiedmann. "At the end of the day, it's all about being able to do more for your employees."It still remains to be seen whether or not the owners of restaurants and other service industry businesses will end what's effectively a capital strike and invest in their workforce. But there is one simple trick to getting people to want to come and work for you, as Pittsburgh's Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor discovered: offer people more money. The outlet more than doubled its starting pay from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour and saw immediate results."It was instant, overnight," the parlor's general manager Maya Johnson<a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2021/05/04/how-local-companies-are-filling-open-roles.html"> told the Pittsburgh Business Times</a>. "We got thousands of applications that poured in."Restaurant owners have a choice to make. They can provide incentives for people to return to work in what's still a dangerous, fraught time for staff to be in forward facing roles - or they can continue to try to shame workers into returning to their jobs. The former works, the latter doesn't. Owners should take heed of that lesson and pay their staff more, not only because it's the right thing to do but because it's the path forward for the industry's survival.

Bookings were cancelled. Revenue disappeared. By May of 2020, the company had announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-under-scrutiny-for-laying-off-1900-employees-2020-7">sweeping layoffs</a> - slashing a quarter of its workforce. It was said to be facing <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/airbnb-racks-up-hundreds-of-millions-in-losses-due-to-coronavirus-11584723498">hundreds of millions in losses</a>. The sharing <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, <a href="https://www.axios.com/coronavirus-sharing-economy-d4bdf47d-69fe-4838-b5e7-a6b3805fc560.html">pundits proclaimed</a>, was gutted.You wouldn't know that, though, from Airbnb's current marketing campaign. In the US, where eased travel restrictions have prompted <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-needs-millions-of-new-hosts-cnbc-2021-4">a wave of demand</a>, the short-term rental business <a href="https://www.airdna.co/blog/airdna-market-review-us-april-2021">is booming</a>. And Airbnb - so recently in crisis - is now branding itself a benefactor. This spring, the company solemnly <a href="https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4105148.html">announced</a> a new focus: working "with governments and tourism agencies globally to support economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic."To the many cities and towns whose economies were ravaged by the pandemic, Airbnb now claims to offer a solution: floods of tourists and an influx of cash. It's a smart strategy - one that would cement the company not only as a cornerstone of travel, but also of local economies.In sleepy Montpelier, <keyword id="85680" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vermont">Vermont</keyword> - the small-town capital of a state that leans heavily on tourism - Airbnb has <a href="https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4105148.html">launched a campaign</a> to revitalize an economy and businesses that "have suffered" from the lack of tourism. In Portland, Oregon, Airbnb is working <a href="https://news.airbnb.com/travel-portland-and-airbnb-partner-to-help-guests-rediscover-portland/#:~:text=The%20travel%20industry%20supports%2036%2C930,these%20critical%20months%20of%20recovery.">with a municipal tourism agency</a> to help travelers "rediscover" the town. And the list goes on: New Mexico, northwest Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma - "Airbnb can be an important part of their revitalization," <a href="https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4105139.html">the company insists</a>.This strategy might be lucrative for Airbnb - but it's deceitful. The company is capitalizing on the economic strain towns and cities are bearing from the pandemic and a growing demand for travel. But unchecked short-term rentals, and the destructive tourism they offer, are not an answer for beleaguered economies.An ounce of hindsight shows that Airbnb does not offer a sustainable business model. As the pandemic proved, its short-term approach to lodging is highly susceptible to economic shock. This came into full view last year with massive layoffs and subsequent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/technology/airbnb-coronavirus-layoffs-.html">internal unrest</a>. It also revealed the many shady landlording schemes that the company <a href="https://www.wired.co.uk/article/airbnb-scam-london">had allowed to proliferate</a>, as Airbnb's overextended tycoons and speculators found themselves <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-bargain-with-the-devilbill-comes-due-for-overextended-airbnb-hosts-11588083336">in hot water</a> when their revenue vanished overnight.Airbnb's hosts are seeing fevered demand for travel now; some of its high-demand listings are reportedly going <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/09/realestate/airbnb-short-term-rentals.html">for $1,000 a night</a>. Investors are once again looking to buy <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-25/investors-chasing-housing-target-massive-pools-of-airbnb-rentals">enormous real estate portfolios</a> to sell off as highly lucrative short-term rentals - using AI software to buy "hundreds of properties" at one time. But there are real reasons to be wary of Airbnb, even when it's lucrative for hosts - as it usually is.<h2>Peeking behind the curtain </h2>For one, the company's claims to be a boon to local economies - specifically, for small businesses and "mom and pop" rental operations - are tenuous at best. Studies <a href="https://www.epi.org/publication/the-economic-costs-and-benefits-of-airbnb-no-reason-for-local-policymakers-to-let-airbnb-bypass-tax-or-regulatory-obligations/">have shown</a> that Airbnb typically increases tourism less than advertised, serving merely as a substitute for other accommodations, which would have drawn the same travelers. And whatever additional travel it does bring is increasingly at the expense of reduced housing stock.Airbnb's impacts on housing are clear: The platform often <a href="https://www.tussyadiah.com/Airbnb%20Housing%20Market.pdf">drives up prices</a> in neighborhoods and <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0308518X18778038">displaces long-term</a> residents, accelerating gentrification. As Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky has even said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWReNXr98oY&amp;t=530s530s">in recent days</a>, the platform is seeing more demand for full house rentals - moving away from the sharing model that once envisioned modest homeowners renting out a spare bedroom. And it is these sorts of rentals that can starkly change the character of neighborhoods.Last month, Airbnb made headlines for its apparently <a href="https://news.airbnb.com/airbnb-commits-to-help-protect-renters-as-cdc-eviction-moratorium-expires/">well-intentioned promise</a> to ban listings at properties that had evicted tenants formerly protected under the federal eviction moratorium - an attempt to lessen the blow of the lifted policy. Yet, as some local news outlets quickly <a href="https://www.wweek.com/news/city/2021/06/17/airbnb-says-it-wont-list-properties-that-evicted-tenants-but-theres-a-catch/">realized</a>, the plan's feasibility is dubious and is likely difficult to implement. For one thing, Airbnb will require cities to inform the company of properties that had evicted tenants - regardless of whether they're tracking that information (and most cities <a href="https://housingmatters.urban.org/feature/robust-eviction-data-can-keep-cities-designing-policy-dark">probably aren't</a>). And, furthermore, <a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-we-undercounted-evictions-by-asking-the-wrong-questions/">many tenants</a> are forced out of their homes informally, without a court order as evidence - when a landlord declines to renew a lease, for instance, or posts an eviction notice, and no one brings the matter to a judge.<h2>'We are about belonging'</h2>The promise to ban listings at properties where tenants were evicted forms part of Airbnb's undying efforts to brand itself as a homey, "mom and pop" business; "What we are about is belonging, and at the center of belonging is love," Chesky told his employees in his <a href="https://news.airbnb.com/a-message-from-co-founder-and-ceo-brian-chesky/">emotional letter</a> announcing last year's layoffs.This identity carries over into the company's policy arguments. This summer, when Nevada passed a new law <a href="https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/the-indy-explains-nevadas-new-short-term-rental-law-and-what-it-means-for-companies-such-as-airbnb">regulating short-term rentals</a>, Airbnb was incensed. The law took the reasonable and increasingly popular step of requiring Airbnbs to be taxed at the same rate as hotel lodging, as well as implementing other various restrictions on short-term rental ownership. A company representative decried all these measures as "a gift for resorts at the expense of regular Nevadans who share their homes."Airbnb has spent years lobbying against laws like Nevada's, which carry actual penalties for violations, in favor of more lukewarm regulation by cities. But its efforts to rescind or block this kind of legislation have adopted a new tone of urgency, bolstered by the company's claims that it is a lifeline for struggling cities. This is echoed by local business leaders. Currently, Columbia, South Carolina is considering new limits on short-term rentals, but it has faced pushback. "We're trying to open back up from a pandemic, now is not the time to put up hurdles for people visiting Columbia," the head of the local chamber of commerce <a href="https://www.postandcourier.com/columbia/news/columbia-weighs-short-term-rental-limits-but-business-leader-says-hurdles-unnecessary/article_f2d2d6e8-da99-11eb-871d-63c8c7f456ba.html">told the Post and Courier</a>. "We need to be opening our arms and welcoming people to come and visit."Airbnb <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/does-airbnb-really-make-housing-more-expensive-these-researchers-say-they-found-an-answer-11612284049">might claim</a> that its platform helps hosts "stay in their homes," but <a href="https://pressreleases.responsesource.com/news/100690/short-term-rentals-on-platforms-like-airbnb-amplify-housing-shortage-in/">study</a> after study has shown that the platform jacks up rent prices and aggravates housing shortages, subverting zoning laws to convert residential housing stock into what are essentially commercial hotels. Meanwhile, the nation is on the brink of a <keyword id="980363" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="housing-crisis">housing crisis</keyword>, as the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/07/09/1014311252/eviction-prevention-programs-are-racing-against-a-moratorium-clock">eviction moratorium lifts</a> and other housing assistance programs - funded by federal relief funds - begin to run dry. In Vermont, where Airbnb is embarking on one of its tourism campaigns, a statewide real estate boom is pricing out renters, all while <a href="https://vtdigger.org/2021/06/30/they-cant-house-us-forever-emergency-motel-hotel-housing-is-ending/">hundreds of residents lose housing</a> as an emergency housing program launched at the onset of the pandemic abruptly ends. In Portland, a longstanding homelessness crisis is <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/06/12/homeless-camps-portland/">only worsening</a>.This moment calls for serious investment in affordable housing and rent relief - all far less lucrative for landlords than short-term rentals. The past year showed that such investment was possible, even if we are now watching it come to a brutal end. We should not be duped into thinking that what we need, instead, are more Airbnbs.

For fat people, a visit is at best traumatic, and at worst, <a href="https://www.nylon.com/fatphobia-killing-people">deadly.</a>I've been dealing with medical fatphobia for years, but the most egregious example happened when I went to an endocrinologist to deal with several health issues I'd been facing. He told me that I should go to Weight Watchers. Two months later, I was diagnosed with <a href="https://rewirenewsgroup.com/article/2019/02/11/why-no-one-noticed-i-was-hungry/">an eating disorder</a> and my symptoms (thinning hair and nails, multiple vitamin deficiencies, chronic fatigue, among others) were a result of my body starving.This experience and others like it have made me deeply distrustful of doctors, which in turn has made me extremely nervous to seek care when I need it, fearing that a doctor wouldn't be able to see past my weight.That's why I -and many other fat people - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/obese-people-should-get-vaccine-dont-shame-2021-2">feared that getting COVID-19</a> would be an even greater risk for us. We've been told that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/obesity-may-raise-men-death-risk-from-coronavirus-study-2020-8">COVID is deadlier for us</a> because having a high BMI makes the disease more dangerous. While that's true, I can't help but ask: how much of that risk is heightened by doctors who don't treat fat patients with the same level of care as thin patients?<h2>A matter of respect </h2>That is the question that people like Hayley, 24, weighed when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-check-if-obesity-qualifies-for-covid-19-vaccine-2021-2">finding out they were eligible</a> for the COVID-19 vaccine based on BMI. "During the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>, I immediately began to notice that many people assumed that fat people would stand no chance against COVID, regardless of their risk level otherwise," she says, "I was also terrified that if I was hospitalized by the virus and there was a shortage of ventilators, it would be possible that I would be given a lower priority level due to fatphobic biases."Sam Tyron, a registered dietitian and eating disorder specialist, agreed with Hayley's assessment. "I wish I could say this isn't a fear based in truth, but I think they are right. This is the reason why despite the roots in inaccurate medical weight stigma, I was glad to see folks in higher weight bodies being prioritized when it came to getting vaccinated", she says, "The way medical providers talk about fat people is sometimes subhuman which leads to devaluing their lives and prioritizing the treatment of thin bodies." This type of devaluation - and the subsequent trauma - is <a href="https://www.insider.com/women-with-belly-fat-more-stigma-than-big-butts-2021-2">unfortunately common</a>. Hayley has always been extremely anxious about going to the doctor. "As a child and young teen, I was constantly berated by my pediatrician to lose weight," she says, "The doctor would frequently ask me to eat different foods or less food, exercise more, even though I had a similar diet and exercise output as my thinner peers."25-year-old grad student Cassidy avoids the doctor as much as possible. While working as a medical scribe for two years, she saw patients experience so much fatphobia from the providers that she says she developed second-hand trauma from her time there. Since she is also fat, she doesn't want to risk that same type of treatment when going in for medical care. Sam says she sees this anxiety manifest in her clients all the time."Medical weight stigma absolutely prevents people in larger bodies from going for routine preventive care or seeking medical care until their symptoms are unbearable. Would you want to voluntarily pay money to be shamed for your weight and 'lifestyle?'" she asks, "I wouldn't. I have stories of clients who go to urgent care thinking they may have strep and the provider lectures them about their weight. If the person isn't even going to be listened to by their provider it is understandable that they would not seek out that abuse."Cassidy currently studies the sociology of health and medicine, where she is particularly interested in fat studies research. When the opportunity arose, she signed up for a COVID vaccine trial because she felt it was important for there to be data showing that the vaccine is effective for fat people. (You may remember the debacle about fat people finding out <a href="https://www.self.com/story/what-are-high-bmi-women-supposed-to-do-about-emergency-contraception">Plan B doesn't work</a> for people over 160 pounds).To qualify for the trial, she had to undergo a medical exam. During the exam, the doctor - an older, white man - made Cassidy deeply uncomfortable by essentially backing her into a corner and grabbing her breast while listening to her heart and lungs. To make matters worse, he followed this assault by asking, "So, how long have you been fighting your weight problem?" Cassidy tried to put an end to the conversation, but he pressed her, trying to get her to explain "what [her] obesity is doing to [her] arteries."He continued to admonish her, telling her she didn't understand her own body, until she was finally moved into another room for the nurse to administer the vaccine. Cassidy began to panic. As she cried and called a friend, she realized she couldn't stay because getting the first dose meant she'd have to come back to get the second, meaning she'd have to see that doctor again. She fled the office and "cried so hard that by the time [she] got down the eight floors" that she started vomiting. "I self-harmed when I got home," says Cassidy, "It was really bad...This is something that is going to affect me for the rest of my life."Violet, 44, has been experiencing fatphobia since childhood. In college, a doctor told her that she would have diabetes at any moment, but lied to her about her blood sugar being abnormal. "It set off a long period of disordered eating where I ate as little as possible trying to avoid a disease I have yet to develop, 25 years later and considerably fatter," she says. Because of previous issues with fatphobia, Violet avoided the doctor even when she began to get really ill.Her chronic illness began with digestive issues, then leg pain, then brain fog. Her doctors suggested the pain would go away if she lost weight, despite the fact that she'd just lost 80 pounds prior to the pain starting. She remembers, "The neurologist I saw was so sure that my weight was causing it that he refused to do an exam and instead literally yelled at me that if I wasn't willing to lose weight that he wouldn't bother to diagnose me."Violet qualified for the COVID-19 vaccine because of her BMI, shockingly before she qualified for being immunocompromised. "The form I filled out was kind enough to ask if I would need a wheelchair...I marked my form indicating I was applying to be vaccinated in group 1B because my BMI made me eligible, but I would also need a wheelchair because of my disability," but when she arrived at the hospital she was annoyed to discover they only had small wheelchairs available.On a day that fat folks were meant to be getting vaccinated, they failed to provide roomier bariatric chairs. Medical tools like "exam tables, wheelchairs, and blood pressure cuffs are not built with fat people in mind, so truly accurate diagnoses are compromised" according to Sam, showing yet another way the medical industrial complex risks the lives of fat people by not prioritizing our even considering us.I want to live in a world where my health is taken seriously because everyone's health should be taken seriously. I want doctors to believe me when I tell them my symptoms of any illness, rather than blaming them all on my size. The fight for fat people to be treated fairly at the doctor's office is far from over, and our struggles with fatphobia have always extended beyond accessing care or vaccines for COVID-19.That being said, fat folks being prioritized for the vaccine - albeit for a misguided reason - showed me that it's possible for marginalized people to be given priority by the healthcare system. If it was possible once, it should be made possible always.

America's healthcare system is fatphobic. Doctors need to finally treat fat people with respect and prioritize their health.

Once seen as a liberatory technology that would usher in an era of creativity and new connections across the globe, many - from casual Twitter users to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/style/creator-burnout-social-media.html">professional content creators</a> - have turned on the technology. You can get a sense of the shift in mood from our media output: There's Netflix's popular, dystopian reality show "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-circle-netflix-unlike-any-other-reality-show-on-tv-2020-1">The Circle</a>," in which contestants cynically compete for money using often fake internet personas. One of the streaming site's most popular documentaries in the last year was "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/09/movies/the-social-dilemma-review.html">The Social Dilemma</a>," which captured viewers' attention with its explanations of Facebook's privacy faux-pas. And even some of the most buzzed-about novels this year are about the darker sides of the internet, like Lauren Oyler's "<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/feb/15/fake-accounts-by-lauren-oyler-review-a-whole-lot-of-swiping">Fake Accounts,</a>" and Patricia Lockwood's "<a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/634158/no-one-is-talking-about-this-by-patricia-lockwood/">No One Is Talking About This</a>."We're all re-analyzing our relationship to the internet for good reason, but we've misclassified what this relationship really is. It's not like a bad relationship, where you can just walk away, and it's not like junk food, where you can decide to eat less - it's an all-encompassing technology, our main economic engine, the tool we are forced to use to meet others and mediate our entire lives. A solution to our current internet-use crisis cannot come at an individual level anymore than one person quitting their job would solve capitalism's poor working conditions. If we want any hope of making the internet less stressful, less back-breaking, and more fulfilling, content creators, gig economy workers, and even casual internet users need to push for a systemic solution.<h2>We know the internet is rotting our brains</h2>A growing body of evidence suggests that the internet really is terrible for us. A <a href="https://guilfordjournals.com/doi/10.1521/jscp.2018.37.10.751">2018 study</a> of college students found that limiting social media use to 10 minutes a day significantly reduced anxiety in its participants. A <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/article-abstract/2749480">2019 study</a> found that teens who spent more time online were more likely to have mental health conditions. <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/i-hear-you/201906/is-social-media-bad-you">Other studies find</a> that social media users end up feeling more lonely, more isolated, and less self confident. A veritable cottage industry has cropped up to capitalize on people's knowledge that the internet is bad for them. The web is littered with how-tos on taking a break from social media, and self-help books have been written encouraging us to unplug. There are <a href="https://www.ted.com/playlists/679/how_did_the_internet_take_over_our_lives">several popular TED Talks</a> from former internet engineers and executives telling people that the internet is bad for them and they should leave social media behind. <a href="https://garage.vice.com/en_us/article/wjkbv4/tech-free-retreat">Retreats for the wealthy</a> which forbid phones and computers have cropped up, and, perhaps most worryingly, the very people who build this technology are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-parents-raising-their-kids-tech-free-red-flag-2018-2">sending their kids to schools</a> where the technology is banned - a tacit admission of its potential to harm people's minds.We're constantly reminded that the internet is bad for us and yet social media use is as high as it's ever been, <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/433871/daily-social-media-usage-worldwide/">averaging 145 minutes per person per day globally</a>. We're stuck in a cycle where we know something is bad, we want to stop, and yet, seemingly, we can't.<h2>The internet as a factory where we work, but don't get paid</h2>We can't quit the internet because we've conceptualized the problem all wrong. Social media is not an individual addiction that can be addressed at an individual level - it's a societal problem that needs a societal fix. We need to think of the internet less as a tool we all somehow can't stop using, and more as a factory we're required to be in. Our entire society has been reformulated around the internet, much like it was centered around the factory during the Industrial Revolution. If there's an <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/25/21719396/amazon-web-services-aws-outage-down-internet">Amazon Web Services outage</a>, much of our society stops functioning. Without the internet, we couldn't find jobs, or, at this point, even friends. The "gig economy" - the often <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-uber-driver-wages-20180518-story.html">underpaid</a> and <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/93yw73/we-are-devastated-instacart-is-deactivating-workers-and-they-dont-know-why">exploitative</a> labor performed by Uber drivers and Instacart shoppers - was enabled by the internet, and now <a href="https://www.gigeconomydata.org/basics/how-many-gig-workers-are-there">more than a quarter of workers</a> in the US participate in this economy in some form. During the pandemic, office workers were only able to fulfil their required job duties through the internet, and college students forked over full tuition for the privilege of staring at Zoom for hours each day. We're all required to be here - online - for our livelihoods. But even when we're not required to be here, companies attempt to make sure we still are: App and game developers <a href="https://www.newstatesman.com/culture/books/2017/03/how-technology-companies-are-keeping-you-addicted-your-phone">use the same science</a> that keeps people playing the slots in Las Vegas to keep us glued to our screens. As culture and media theorist McKenzie Wark <a href="https://www.versobooks.com/books/3762-capital-is-dead">writes</a> in her book "Capital is Dead: Is This Something Worse?", the internet uses our labor without us really knowing it. Unlike the broadcast era of media, during which the owners of television networks and movie studios had to at least create the content to sell to us, we now create all the content for each other, mostly without being paid. "[Social media companies like Facebook] don't even bother to provide any entertainment," Wark writes. "We have to entertain each other, while they collect the rent, and they collect it on all social media time, public or private, work or leisure, and (if you keep your FitBit on) even when you sleep." We produce the memes, tweets, posts, and pictures that keep us tethered to the internet, and then that <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/120114/how-does-facebook-fb-make-money.asp">content is monetized</a> in the form of advertisements - revenue users help produce, but do not usually see a penny of. Although a very select number of internet users <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-ends-spotlight-paydays-still-paying-creators-millions-2021-5">can get paid</a> for their labor - i.e. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-to-make-money-instagram-influencer-guide-2020-1">influencers</a> or popular YouTubers - most of us do not. If the internet is a factory, it is one in which the vast majority of people are not getting paid. Instead, users often fight with each other for non-monetary payment <a href="https://reallifemag.com/paid-in-full/">in the form of clout</a> - recognition that we can produce the most and best content for free."In some quarters [of society], this affective currency has replaced the wages of industrialization, especially for professionals who used to earn a structured living from paid content and who now disseminate their bylines far and wide in hopes of securing a niche livelihood from name recognition," the sociologist Andrew Ross <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Digital-Labor-The-Internet-as-Playground-and-Factory/Scholz/p/book/9780415896955">writes</a>.This free or cheap labor has widened income inequality massively, according to some theorists. We fight for followers, retweets, and likes, all for free, while the platforms we're on profit massively. And only a few, large companies are collecting these profits; <a href="https://martech.org/almost-70-of-digital-ad-spending-going-to-google-facebook-amazon-says-analyst-firm/">almost 70% of all digital ad spending</a> goes to either Google, Facebook, or Amazon.As Yasha Levine writes in his book "<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/06/surveillance-valley-by-yasha-levine-review">Surveillance Valley</a>," the internet was never meant to be a place friendly to the average user - it was developed by the US military to spy on people during wars, and then used to spy on Americans at home too. Some of Google's initial funding <a href="https://qz.com/1145669/googles-true-origin-partly-lies-in-cia-and-nsa-research-grants-for-mass-surveillance/">came from grants from US spy agencies</a>. When the infrastructure of the internet was sold off by the US government to private companies, the people who stood to profit off that privatization funded magazines, advertisements, and lobbying to reframe the internet from a surveillance tool to one that could liberate us culturally. As detailed by Levine, Louis Rossetto - the founder of Wired Magazine, the biggest megaphone for evangelizing the new, privatized internet in the 1990s - was an Ayn Rand fan who believed the internet would come to replace the need for a government. Today we live in this libertarian vision of the internet in which companies exist largely unregulated, undertaxed, and able to do what they want without worry that the government will interfere.<h2>So… What do we do?</h2>But now, more people seem to be seeing through the hype. So, the question now is what to do with this new, collective revelation.If the internet is somewhat like a factory, perhaps we should treat it like one. In 2014, the artist Laurel Ptak created a manifesto called <a href="http://wagesforfacebook.com/">Wages for Facebook</a> in which she argued that Facebook should pay users for their content: "They say it's friendship. We say it's unwaged work. With every like, chat, tag or poke our subjectivity turns them a profit. They call it sharing. We call it stealing."Though Ptak's work is a piece of art, not a <keyword id="6363690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Strategy">strategy</keyword> for changing the web, it could be a starting point. Perhaps we as internet users can organize to stop giving away our hearts and minds for free so that a select few can profit off of them. Just as labor organizers have pushed to make other industries less exploitative, perhaps we need a movement to do the same with the internet. As Levine writes, in 1969, hundreds of students at Harvard gathered to protest the university's involvement in the creation of ARPANET, the precursor to the modern internet. The students saw it as a dangerous technology that would be used to surveil the entire world. If, at the beginning of the internet, the technology's potential for harm was already obvious to some, there's no reason it cannot become obvious to us again. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before enough of us say "enough," and protest the internet's totalizing grasp on our labor and our lives.

The internet is destroying our brains, but we can't quit. It's a factory we're forced to work in without any pay.

I chatted with customer service agents from Cox Communications, a cable and internet provider which earned more than <a href="https://newsroom.cox.com/company-overview">$12 billion in revenue in 2020</a>, about a dozen times. Each time, a customer service representative told me that they "felt my frustration and anger." One said, "I hate when this happens, I totally get it." The problem is, they did not get it. The reason Cox could take their sweet time fixing my internet was not because <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="life">life</keyword> is frustrating and hard, but because they are a monopoly - <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/2/18/21126347/antitrust-monopolies-internet-telecommunications-cheerleading">the only option for broadband service in vast swaths of the United States</a>, and thus have no one competing with them for my money. My internet access was dependent on them, and instead of addressing that problem, they told me they empathized with it. I thought the experience was a particularly bizarre, but isolated customer service strategy. Until one day I was on the phone with T-Mobile, and the customer service agent said, "You sound sad today, is everything okay?"Then hits kept coming. Late last year, the athleisure behemoth Lululemon tweeted out "It's okay to not be okay," to which hundreds of internet users replied with variations on the theme of "<a href="https://twitter.com/lululemon/status/1332836675349860352?lang=en">aren't you the company that was caught under-paying and beating your factory workers?</a>" Last week, I woke up to an <a href="https://twitter.com/ByYourLogic/status/1395420266218491904">alert from my Chipotle app</a> (sometimes I have a craving for their burritos, don't judge me) telling me that I should "check in on someone today." And the official account for the government of Israel, which recently engaged in a bombing campaign that <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/16/more-deaths-gaza-israel-launches-most-intense-raids-yet">killed hundreds of Palestinians</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/Israel/status/1392365134841094144">tweeted</a> on May 12 that they were having a "difficult night" but appreciated the "messages of support from you guys." The tweet ended with a heart emoji. It's no coincidence that these uber-powerful entities have all settled on language that makes them seem like "healthy living" Instagram influencers. The language of therapy and self help has been co-opted by institutions to distract from their power and sell us on the idea that they're just like us. This is not only an attempt to try and get us to forget their misdeeds, it also ruins the language of care built to actually help people, reducing what were once radical tools for survival to a hollow branding strategy. <h2>Emotional branding sells</h2>Corporations use the language of <keyword id="2811808" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="self-care">self care</keyword> and <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> because it makes them money. There's an entire field of advertising called "<a href="https://www.spiralytics.com/blog/emotional-marketing-what-it-is-and-how-it-works/">emotional marketing</a>" dedicated to helping brands establish personal bonds with consumers. Ads with "emotional pull" are <a href="https://www.spiralytics.com/blog/emotional-marketing-what-it-is-and-how-it-works/">more likely to create loyalty among consumers</a>, and encourage them to buy more. Emotional manipulation for profit is nothing new. The work of Edward Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud, is often considered the blueprint for using psychology to manipulate consumers. He believed that by harnessing psychoanalytic theories of the mind and human behavior, he could subconsciously influence people to do just about anything. In <a href="https://www.apa.org/monitor/2009/12/consumer">1929 he employed his thesis</a> after being hired by the American Tobacco Company with a campaign to break the taboo of women smoking cigarettes by linking the idea of smoking with women's freedom. It worked - women bought more cigarettes, and the<a href="https://yourstory.com/2014/08/torches-of-freedom/amp"> media began associating cigarettes with </a>the very idea of independence and freedom.The present-day marketing shift to focus on self care is just a new facet of the emotional branding manipulation corporations use to win over consumer's hearts - one that matches our era of increased fear, anxiety, and depression. It makes sense that at a time when depression rates, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/depression-rates-by-age-young-people-2019-3">especially among young people</a>, march steadily higher, and anxiety is present in everything that companies and other powerful institutions would attempt to capture our minds and dollars not through vague concepts of freedom or empowerment, but through the idea of life feeling survivable. <h2>The kids are not alright</h2>Cox and T-Mobile's faux-empathetic customer service, Chipotle's "check in on your friends" push notification, and Lululemon insistence that it's ok not to feel okay hint at the predominant mental problems currently ailing our society: a feeling of constant dread, a sense of isolation and disconnection, and persistent anhedonia - a feeling that, no matter what, even if life feels good on the surface, we do not, in fact, feel okay.In 2014, the <a href="https://www.weareplanc.org/blog/we-are-all-very-anxious/">European leftist collective Plan C published a treatise</a> on capitalism and our feelings. They posited that the predominant affect, or feeling, of the mid-1900s was boredom. The hippie and free love movements were a response to this boredom, but so was the advertising created by people like Bernays - exploiting people's dissatisfaction with a stifling suburban life to sell them the idea of excitement and freedom. Post-2008 financial crisis, according to Plan C, the predominant affect switched to anxiety as jobs disappeared and housing grew precarious. We are now likely in a new age, one of disconnection and dissociation, spurred by the isolation and overwhelming nature of the internet and the pandemic. We have yet to see what the social response will be to this, but we can already see what advertising's response has been: to sell us the idea that in an age where we all feel alone, scared, and unable to connect to each other, perhaps our friends at Lululemon, or Cox, or Chipotle can help.<h2>"An act of political warfare"</h2>Beyond the cynicism that this corporate cooptation of care inevitably breeds, it also erases the radical roots of the language. In the 1960s, the concept of care was <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/the-radical-history-of-self-care">used by radical Black activists like the Black Panther Party</a> (BPP) to center the wellbeing of people of color in a world that was, and still is, actively hostile to their bodies and minds. The BPP thought taking care of one's own body, mind, and self image was a necessary response to living in a racist country. In 1988, the Black feminist <a href="https://www.akpress.org/catalog/product/view/id/3259/s/aburstoflight/category/6/">Audre Lorde wrote</a> that, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare."A company - or country engaged in warfare - taking these concepts and using them to their own end disenables us from using this language in any kind of productive way. The phrase "it's okay to not be okay" might be a good way to view mental health recovery - I had to learn how to apply it to my own life after PTSD wrecked my productivity a few years ago - but now it's also forever associated with a leggings company, diluting its power. Corporations tell us it's okay to not be okay when they are, in large part, the reason we are not okay. Unfortunately, this corporate version of care has trickled down into how we speak to each other on a daily basis. When the Black Panthers and other radicals preached self care, they did so as part of a toolkit to fight against the material realities of racism and capitalism. Now, concepts of care and empathy float around with no root: Instagram influencers preach self care as they sell us beauty products; Twitter memes tell us that the problem with men is that they simply do not go to therapy, that it's okay to break plans, and that it's encouraged to <a href="https://twitter.com/fyeahmfabello/status/1196581296564256768">deny people your time and energy when they need help</a>. We tell each other to take care of ourselves without acknowledging the reasons we need so much care in the first place - the isolation, anxiety, and depression caused by living in 21st-century America. All of this does not make the very concept of care meaningless, but we must purposefully work to return material meaning to it. And I have no doubt we eventually will. Bernays realized that people in the mid-1900s were craving freedom and used that realization to sell cigarettes. But then people realized that they needed to truly escape the boredom of the 1950s, and that purchasing things was not the way out. A real movement for Civil Rights - a movement against the white stasis of mid-20th-century America - blossomed. Today, corporations realize people are craving care and connection. They've tapped into a real need; but I have to believe it's only a matter of time before we all see that real need and build a solution to it with our own hands. I can already see it happening on social media: The language of self care has been re-radicalized, positioned against corporations and capitalism. Accounts like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thenapministry/">The Nap Ministry</a> are teaching people that their own care is not politically neutral, but a necessary bulwark against productivity-culture burnout. But we now need to take this rhetoric and turn it into action. That could mean forming free-therapy collectives, doing teach-ins about mental <keyword id="6354525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="healthcare">healthcare</keyword>, or providing free meals like the Black Panthers did so families feel less isolated from each other. At a small scale, these things already exist, but we need to make them a more central part of any radical practice. Otherwise, we risk repeating a daunting cycle of being exhausted, overworked, and made to feel like automatons, leaving the solutions to the corporations and institutions least interested in actually solving them.

Corporations have hijacked the language of self care to seem 'relatable.' Don't fall for the gimmick.

The thoughts expressed are those of the author. </li></ul>Over the last year, American workers have attempted to make their workplaces sites of social change and political discourse. Employees have fought for action, hoping the firms they work for will be agents in the fight against, among other things, systemic racism and harassment. But recent changes at Basecamp, a workplace collaboration software company with approximately 60 employees, show why it is so hard to make American businesses respond to these problems. At the end of the day, the American workplace is not a democracy, it's an autocracy. In a democratic workplace, bosses would be accountable to the employees through a union or because employees held a significant number of seats on the corporate board, or, among other things, the law made it much more difficult to terminate employees. But in America, owners, managers, and bosses have the final say, and if political questions challenge their rule - or even just inconvenience them - they will be shut down. <h2>Basecamp's controversial apolitical stance</h2>On April 26, Basecamp cofounder and CEO Jason Fried and cofounder David Heinemeier Hansson <a href="https://world.hey.com/jason/changes-at-basecamp-7f32afc5">posted a message on Fried's blog </a>entitled "Changes at Basecamp." The post <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basecamp-bans-political-discussions-fitness-at-work-2021-4">announced</a> a suspension of employee benefits for gym memberships and farmer's market shares, but, more ominously, highlighted a new ban on political discussions at work and a dissolution of all committees. Fried noted that discussions "related to politics, advocacy, or society at large" are "not healthy, [they haven't] served us well. And we're done with it at Basecamp." Fried added that the company could no longer dwell on past mistakes."Who's responsible for these changes?" Fried asked rhetorically, "David and I are. Who made the changes? David and I did." Fried and Hansson had unilaterally changed the workplace policies with a tone that could be read as hostile to disagreement. "The responsibility for negotiating use restrictions and moral quandaries returns to me and David," Fried wrote.While the letter was vague about what had caused this policy change, a few days later, The Verge <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/3/22418208/basecamp-all-hands-meeting-employee-resignations-buyouts-implosion">reported that the push came because</a> what Fried construed as a political discussion really concerned a potential instance of workplace harassment. In the last year or so, Basecamp employees had grown increasingly concerned about what was known as the "Best Names Ever" list - a collection of Basecamp customer names that employees had presumably found funny. While the list included many Nordic or American names, it also included some names of apparent African and Asian descent. In the wake of the uprisings for racial equality in the last year and particularly the wave of anti-Asian violence, workers were demanding to know why this list, which both Fried and Hansson had known about since at least 2016, had festered for so long. Some employees had revived a dormant diversity, equity, and inclusion channel in order to address these and other concerns.One employee cited the Anti-Defamation League's "<a href="https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/pyramid-of-hate.pdf">pyramid of hate</a>," suggesting that allowing this "Best Names Ever" list to exist was a dangerous precedent, and felt that Hansson and Fried should be held accountable. Hansson fired back <a href="https://world.hey.com/dhh/let-it-all-out-78485e8e">in his own blog post</a> saying that he thought this was an unfair argument and that this employee themself had tolerated the list. Two weeks later, on a Monday, Fried posted "Changes at Basecamp." After Friday's all-hands meeting, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basecamp-workers-flee-what-some-describe-as-autocratic-culture-2021-4">more than 20 employees resigned</a>. <h2>Workplace as totalitarian regime</h2>Much like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-a-ceo-memo-made-coinbase-political-2020-10">a similar announcement</a> by Coinbase, the uproar at Basecamp is an example of the reaction by bosses to workers' demands that workplaces address discrimination, harassment, and the political and structural factors that perpetuate racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Basecamp also demonstrates why addressing those issues in the workplace is so challenging in America. Companies are structured like an unaccountable totalitarian regime. Fried and Hansson, legally, have the power to end discussions. That is, they have the unilateral power to silence speech they don't like.This seemed to be at odds with that fact that Basecamp, as a company, had been explicitly political in the past. They donated their office space in Chicago <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/chicago/inno/stories/news/2018/04/30/why-tech-founder-neal-s-les-griffin-is-running-for.html">to a political candidate</a> running for mayor, and the owners <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/21/21070812/sonos-tile-basecamp-popsocket-congressional-hearing-amazon-google-apple-competition">testified</a> about Apple's monopolistic practices, and Fried even <a href="https://www.inc.com/magazine/201709/jason-fried/2017-inc5000-diversity-in-the-workforce.html">published an article</a> in Inc. about Basecamp's failure and attempts to address workplace diversity.None of this surprises University of Michigan philosophy professor Elizabeth Anderson, author of the book "Private Government: How Employers Rule Our Lives (and Why We Don't Talk about It)." In her book, she argues that while Americans aspire to democracy, most American workplaces are, structurally, dictatorships. Workers have little to no say in who is in charge of them and almost no free speech protections. Bosses can hire whomever they want, determine pay, control who does what work and when, and fire employees for almost any reason. The latter is enabled by "at will" employment provisions, which give employers freedom to terminate workers. Our legal system is such that founders like Fried and Hansson are largely unaccountable to employees, unlike the situation in many other countries, like Germany, where it is much more difficult to fire employees, and the inclusion of workers in managerial decisions is often the norm. This often takes place via "workers councils" in which a certain number of seats on corporate boards are reserved for workers.<h2>Democratic workplaces create better citizens</h2>Researchers of the role of politics in the workplace note that increasing democracy in the workplace and giving workers a say in the rules that govern their conduct trains people for democratic life in general. New York University Law Professor Cynthia Estlund says that there used to be a more robust discussion 80 years ago about what was then called "industrial democracy," and about the workplace as a "school for democracy." Unions were growing, and they fought for worker protections that limited the bosses' ability to unilaterally fire workers and dictate the terms of work. Such protections empowered workers to speak out against unfair, discriminatory, or harassing conduct in the workplace. Today, we spend most of our time at work, so it's no wonder that many workers want their workplaces to be sites of societal and political change, or at least be a place where people can talk freely about current issues.Estlund said that there are additional benefits to worker protections for open political discussion: The workplace is one of the few places in life in which we engage with a relatively politically diverse group of people. Coworkers are generally not people we grew up with or freely choose to associate with. They are a "bridge to the larger citizenry," Estlund said. If we hope to create a less divided country and get outside our ideological bubbles, "it's mainly in the workplace that we actually interact on a sustained basis with once-strangers." In fact, the workplace protections against racial harassment that sprang up in the post-war period may have been violated at Basecamp, Anderson told me in an email. "All employers are legally obligated to act against racial harassment including hostile environment harassment that need not target an identified employee," she wrote. "So the racist spreadsheet is clearly covered by already existing requirements. Instead, Basecamp really wanted to shut down criticism of Basecamp's racist working conditions, even though labor law clearly protects the right of workers to complain about working conditions, even if they are not organized into a union."<h2>At the bosses' whim</h2>It's unclear why exactly employers prefer this top-down arrangement that is so opposed to the values of American life, though for Fried and Hansson the benefit is clear. They alone can end a discussion that implicates their conduct. Instead of engaging with what they found to be a bad argument and find a path forward, they shut down the discussion completely. And the result was catastrophic for the company - not only for how they look, but because they lost more than<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basecamp-workers-flee-what-some-describe-as-autocratic-culture-2021-4"> a third</a> of their employees, suggesting that leaning on authoritarian tactics is detrimental for retention.To make the workplace more democratic, we could, among other things, strengthen laws and norms protecting employment, make cooperative ownership easier, dramatically bolster unionization and collective bargaining, and give workers a say in managerial decisions. But until then, firms' prerogatives will only reflect a minority of opinions (<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-09-01/most-of-americas-businesses-run-by-white-men-says-census-bureau">a minority that skews heavily white and male</a>) and workers' voices will continue to be silenced.And as calls by workers for their firms to be agents of social change increase - for businesses to take stances on systemic racism, the climate emergency, and to make the workplace free of harassment - Basecamp demonstrates why that is so difficult in America. The telecom behemoth is investing in the digital media property, hiring big-name talent away from its financial-news rivals, ramping up video to a full day of live-streaming news, and launching a paid subscription service for content.But for some, the investment is at odds with a newsroom built on a cohort of "permalancers," or contract workers with job responsibilities and hours indistinguishable from full-time staff, but with none of the benefits.Business Insider spoke to five current and former Yahoo Finance employees, who said these "permalancers" write for the website, anchor news programs, and produce the daily financial news programs. In November, the company <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/editor-yahoo-com-and-aol-com-front-pages-contract-at-oath-960139392/?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&amp;utm_source=google_jobs_apply&amp;utm_medium=organic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted a new job opening</a> for a front-page editor that was a contractor position, requesting applicants with three to five years of editorial experience and the ability to work "early mornings, late nights, holidays and weekends."Some of those former employees left because they were unable to become full-timers, while others were let go from contracts that allowed the company to fire at will. Four of them said that it was virtually impossible to tell the difference between full-time and contract employees. Contract workers at Yahoo Finance run the gamut from employees who write for the website, anchor news programs, and produce the daily financial news programs."I can tell you that [editor in chief] Andy Serwer [said] they 'hire contractors all the time' or 'we have a lot of contractors working for us,'" one former contractor told Business Insider. Sources who spoke with Business Insider put the percentage of contractors in the newsroom at about 25%. Yahoo Finance and parent business unit Oath declined to comment for this story.Some of the employment practices felt intentionally deceptive, the employees said. For example, some contract workers supposedly had a path to full-time employment once they worked at the company for a year. To skirt this stipulation, management fired staffers just ahead of the one-year mark, then hired them back shortly after, they said."I felt frustrated. They had terrible hiring practices," another former Yahoo Finance contract employee who worked at the company for several years told Business Insider. Unlike full-time staff, contract workers at Yahoo are ineligible for company benefits, like health insurance and the ability to contribute to Yahoo's 401(k) savings plan. Contractors don't receive paid time off for sick days, maternity leave, or vacation. And other perks offered for free to full-time staff, like access to the company gym, are available to Yahoo contractors for a nominal fee.Some contracts at Yahoo Finance, like those given to employees who anchor on news programs, aren't bound by the same one-year rule for transition to full time. Yahoo hires some staff under these "talent" contracts, and employees work indefinitely without the ability for conversion to full time, according to former Yahoo Finance staff. One former employee told Business Insider they worked for the company for years without health insurance or a paid vacation.<h2>Shadow workforces</h2>The employment strategies at Yahoo Finance aren't new. They're a long-established practice predating Verizon's acquisition of the company in 2017, according to former employees of the company.But using employee contractors in newsrooms is unusual, according to union representatives with visibility on employment practices in the industry."It's uncommon," Tim Schick, administrative director at The News Guild, told Business Insider. "To my knowledge that practice is more prevalent in software development and tech type work than at newspapers or digital operations."Schick knows of no newsrooms with significant numbers of editorial contractors, which he described as a wholly different scenario than freelancers, who typically have more freedom to choose when and where they work. In news media, "you're either an employee or you're a freelancer as opposed to what you're describing, which is a lower paid contract worker," he said, adding that such a model allows a business to employ a "more disposable lower class of workers." The News Guild represents newsrooms like The Daily Beast, Raw Story, and The Guardian."We have not encountered shadow newsrooms where a significant portion of the work [is] assigned to contractors," Lowell Peterson, executive director of the Writers Guild of America, East, told Business Insider in an email. The Writers Guild represents newsrooms like The Huffington Post, which is also a digital-media property owned by Verizon.It's not that contract work is uncommon in all industries. Historically, contractors have been prevalent in job functions like construction or agriculture. And the percentage of contract workers in the labor force is up 60% since 2005 in all 13 sectors of the economy, Becky Frankiewicz, president of employment staffing firm ManpowerGroup North America, told Business Insider.Recently, there's been a focus on so-called "shadow workforces" in the high-growth tech sector that often relies on gig economy workers for short-term projects. The growth in contractors at Google exemplifies this trend. Contractors outnumbered full-time employees at Google's parent company Alphabet for the first time history this year, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2018-07-25/inside-google-s-shadow-workforce" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg reported in July</a>. Alphabet declined to comment to Bloomberg on the exact number of contract workers it employs.A hallmark of independent contract work is that employees typically have more flexibility to determine the specifics of their service, forming their own work-day schedules, negotiating rates for services, and essentially running their own small businesses. But employee contractors, those that Schick described as a lower-tier staffer working shoulder-to-shoulder with full-time staff but with none of the benefits and often for lower pay, don't have this flexibility and usually don't elect to work this way. The use of employee contractors benefits management as these employees have less long-term ties to the business operation and would be the first to go if the company downsizes, according to Schick.But the transient nature of these employees cuts the other way too, building a cohort of uncommitted workers whose prospects are limited and are apt to leave the company when more stable opportunities arise."It's not inspiring to be there everyday," a former Yahoo Finance contractor told Business Insider. "There is no opportunity to ever become permanent. The idea was to create a media juggernaut then named Oath. Today, Oath in name is dead, rebranded to Verizon Media Group. A slew of media execs pivotal to the conception of Oath are also gone, including CEO Tim Armstrong, who left in October, and Simon Khalaf, head of Oath's media brands, who left in April.Over the past year, the integration between AOL and Yahoo has been rocky, with massive layoffs and constantly changing strategies, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/insiders-say-verizons-marriage-of-yahoo-and-aol-was-always-doomed-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to former Oath employees</a>. Amid the layoffs, Yahoo Finance was relatively insulated from the turmoil, employees said, feeling their line of business was designated the "golden child."But the business strategy at Yahoo Finance was equally volatile, according to the employees, who described "wild swings" in guidance from week to week. "First the direction was that no interviews could be longer than two minutes. Then a week later, no one cares at all," a former employee told Business Insider. Contractors were hired during this time in an effort to push short videos onto various Verizon platforms, according to a former Yahoo employee.Yahoo Finance is now working towards eight hours a day of live programming -- another change that staff will need time and sufficient leadership to effectively achieve, the employee said.The newsroom may gain stability as Yahoo seems committed to building out a full day of live programming with several high-profile additions in recent months. Yahoo hired Julie Hyman from Bloomberg Television and Adam Shapiro from Fox News as anchors in October. This summer Andy Hoffman, a veteran news producer who helped launch Fox Business, joined the staff as senior executive producer.And despite a turbulent integration at Oath, Yahoo Finance still has significant viewership.
