<br />The touchpad has always been a differentiating factor for laptops around the world. <keyword id="13722" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword>’s glass touchpads on the <keyword id="66463" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carbon">Carbon</keyword> series make it a business-class favourite, while <keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> employed tried to differentiate using its Force Touch technology on the trackpad. Yet, touchpads/trackpads haven’t evolved a lot over the years.<br /><br />That’s changing today, as <keyword id="139648" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASUS">Asus</keyword> unveils its newest laptop, the Zenbook Pro series. The trackpad on this is called the <keyword id="6592624" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="screenpad">Screenpad</keyword> and Asus hopes it’s going to be a revelation for the market at large. It’s basically a 5.5-inch touchscreen display with a matte finish that can be used for various purposes.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="IMG_20180603_170512" msid="64459912" hostid="261"></div>

Instead of metal, aluminium or anything else, it’s an actual display. You can quickly save a presentation by touching the save button on the Screenpad, or add text etc. It feels like a solution similar to Apple’s Touchbar, and though it’s just as gimmicky, it does feel more useful.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="IMG_20180603_171400" tempid="250158" msid="64459953" hostid="261"></div>

However, while the latency between touching an app’s icon on the Screenpad and the same being launched on the main screen is low for native Windows apps, Chrome shows a noticeable lag. If the Screenpad is to become a thing, Asus has to get a hang of this.<br /><br />The 15-inch Zenbook Pro has an 8th generation <keyword id="441421" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel-Core">Intel Core</keyword> i9 processor and the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti <keyword id="257940" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GPU">GPU</keyword>. You can get up to a 1TB SSD and of course, the Screenpad itself. Asus hasn’t yet revealed when the laptops will be sold from, but they should arrive in global markets soon enough.<br /><br />

This new mechanism raises the display at an angle to ensure air can be let out easily. Even over extended gaming sessions, I noticed the Zenbook remained cool for the most part, with the keyboard feeling a little warm sometimes. On the whole, though, the cooling mechanism worked very well.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo display" comment="subhead" text="Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo display"><span data-til="noop">Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo display</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />      <div type="image" title="Dis" msid="93945946" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The two displays on the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The displays are the highlights of the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo – the laptop features two displays, offering touch and stylus support.<br /><br />      <div type="image" title="Primary display" msid="93945984" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The primary display on the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />Coming to the primary display, the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo sports a 14.5-inch 2.8K resolution (2880 x 1800 pixels) OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is a visual delight no matter what you are doing. I tried everything from games to movies to document editing and more, and I was impressed in all cases.<br /><br />Although I’m not a creator, the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo comes with a Pantone-validated display, so colour accuracy is another standout feature. It also supports HDR and Dolby Vision, and is bright enough both indoors and outdoors at 550 nits.<br /><br />      <div type="image" title="sec" msid="93946020" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The secondary display on the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The secondary display, which Asus likes to call ScreenPad Plus, is a 12.7-inch IPS LCD panel with touch and stylus support. While the ScreenPad can double up as another source for things like monitoring usage, a second window to read a document or place additional windows and keeping the main display tidy, Asus also lets you use it as a number pad, trackpad and more. There are plenty of options to choose from here.<br /><br />For instance, I used the secondary display to note down pointers while watching a video stream – this can be plenty useful and allows you not to lose sight of the event. No more constant switching between windows.<br /><br />The twin Harmon Kardon speakers are adequately loud, too, so you don’t need a pair of external speakers to enjoy shows and movies.<br /><br />      <div type="image" title="Key" msid="93946042" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The keyboard on the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />However, one undesirable effect of the ScreenPad is that the keyboard is pushed to the edges, so there’s no place to rest your palm. I received the Core i9 variant with NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti graphics and Windows 11 installed out of the box.<br /><br />I threw almost everything at the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo – this includes basic things like having documents open in Office and Chrome, with half a dozen other tabs in the background, to streaming movies and games like GTA V, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds at ‘high’ setting.<br /><br />Asus’ cooling system worked very well for the most part, despite extended gaming sessions eking out all the possible performance from the laptop. As I mentioned above, the keyboard got a little warm sometimes, but that is fine.<br /><br />Overall, the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo’s performance was top-notch in all regards. Even if you run out of juice, the fast charger can quickly give you a boost.<br /><br />In my usage, the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo lasted 5-6 hours on average, with document editing in Word and Google Docs throughout the day. I also played some music in between and over the weekends, played a few games. While I was usually plugged in while gaming, I did play once on battery, and the laptop was down to 40% after gaming for a little less than 2 hours.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict"><span data-til="noop">Verdict</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />The Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo is tailor-made for creators and multitaskers who need multiple monitors and an expansive canvas in a portable form factor. The ScreenPad, if used right, can prove to be a boon and eliminate the need for a dedicated external display.<br /><br />The stunning 14.5-inch OLED display also makes this ultrabook a great consumption device. The keys are responsive and have a 1.7mm travel time between them.<br /><br />The trackpad also doubles up as a number pad once you click on the number pad button on it. I had a great time gaming on the laptop and after gaming on several laptops over the years, I can easily say that this is one of the best displays. I can confidently say that you won’t need an external monitor if you own this, unless you want a bigger real estate to game on.<br /><br />The peak brightness of 1100 nits and DCI-P3 colour standard make it a great device for content creators as well. It is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945Hx processor with 16 cores and 32 threads. This is coupled with up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 16GB GDDR6 graphics.<br /><br />The laptop comes with 32GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM, which can be extended up to 64GB. For storage, it offers a 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD, which can be upgraded to 4TB.<br /><br />I tested the laptop with several games, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 5. Both the games performed well and the laptops were able to handle them without any issues. The powerful hardware means that you will be able to run any game without even having to look at the system requirements.<br /><br />The games ran smoothly on the device, even at Quad HD resolution and I got high FPS at all times, even going above 350 in games like CS: GO. If you are someone who plays lighter games like Counter Strike: Global Offensive or PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds, the laptop is an overkill to handle such games.<br /><br />One of the issues gaming laptops usually face is they tend to heat up if you are playing heavier games for extended durations. This device however performs well even in this area. While it gets a bit noisy, the laptop is able to keep the temperatures under control.<br /><br />While the laptop is equipped with a 90Whr battery, the battery life is not one of the strongest points of the laptop. While gaming, I was able to get around 3 hours of battery life out of the device. It's certainly an unconventional look that makes the second screen seem a bit excessive at first glance.</p><p>But the more time I spent with the ZenBook Pro Duo, the more I found myself wishing I had a laptop with two screens. The secondary display is large enough to actually use it as a supplemental monitor. That's unlike previous concepts I've seen like <a href="https://www.razer.com/projectlinda">Razer's Project Linda</a>, which is powered by the company's Android smartphone and allows you to use the phone as a second screen. The first scenario seems to be the most useful, as I can imagine using the smaller ScreenPad Plus to keep an eye on my email and work chatroom while dedicating the laptop's entire screen to the projects I'm working on.</p><p>Transferring apps between screens was also easy and didn't require much of a learning curve. When pressing and holding on a window on the main screen, a small toolbar pops up with icons for sending that window to the ScreenPad Plus or extending the primary display. All I had to do was simply drag the window to the corresponding symbol.&#xa0;</p><p>The interface also has controls for snapping two or three windows alongside one another on the ScreenPad so that you can evenly divide the space amongst those apps, and a button for swapping the content being displayed on the two screens.&#xa0;</p><p>During my time with the Pro Duo, I used the laptop in both of these ways, browsing websites in separate windows, or stretching the web browser across both displays. Regardless of whether or not the latter is the most practical way to use the Zenbook Pro Duo's second display, it still worked impressively well. The experience of scrolling through websites between the two screens was smooth and seamless, and I never noticed any stuttering or lag.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Given its excessive screen real estate and hefty build, the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo is probably best for those who are seeking a laptop suitable for replacing their desktop PC. Presumably for this reason, the company includes a detachable palm rest in the box with the laptop as well as a stylus. During my brief time with the Pro Duo, I only had the chance to try the laptop while it was resting on a table.
