Sensex scaled the 76,000 level for the first time while Nifty hit a new lifetime peak before closing marginally down on Monday as investors booked profits at record levels amid high volatility ahead of the results of Lok Sabha polls. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed lower by 19.89 points or 0.03 per cent lower at 75,390.50. Intra-day, the barometer climbed 599.29 points or 0.79 per cent to an all-time peak of 76,009.68 following gains in select banking, financial and IT shares. However, investors preferred to book profits at record levels and the index declined around 835 points from the day's high to hit a low of 75,175.27. Broader Nifty of the NSE declined by 24.65 points or 0.11 per cent, to end at 22,932.45. The 50-issue barometer rose by 153.7 points or 0.66 per cent to hit a new lifetime high of 23,110.80 during the day. However, it tanked around 240 points at the fag-end due to selling in oil, energy and FMCG shares. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries declined nearly 1 per cent, dragging the benchmark indices into the negative. Selling in FMCG giant ITC also eroded gains. Equity benchmarks were on a record-breaking rally for the third straight day ahead of the results of Lok Sabha polls and a rally in global markers. The results of the ongoing general elections will be declared on June 4. Sensex breached the historic 75,000-mark for the first time on April 9. It took 31 trading sessions for the benchmark to climb 1,000 points to reach the 76,000-mark on Monday. The BSE benchmark took 21 trading sessions to reach 75,000-mark on April 9 after hitting the 74,000-level on March 6. From the Sensex pack, Wipro, NTPC, Sun Pharma, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, ITC and Reliance Industries were among the biggest laggards. IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Larsen &amp; Toubro and State Bank of India were among the major gainers. "The bulls are facing stiff resistance at 23,000 levels as investors start booking profit at higher levels to avoid any knee-jerk reaction in the market ahead of the election result. Better earnings growth, the expectation of a revival in private capex, and a moderation in FIIs selling intensity are the key positive triggers in the market," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said. "Nifty ended almost flat in a volatile session after hitting record highs in the early part of the session," said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities. Ajit Mishra - SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd said that the tone was positive in the first half, but profit-taking in heavyweights in the second half erased all the gains. In the broader market, the BSE midcap gauge climbed 0.63 per cent while smallcap index dipped 0.09 per cent. Among the indices, oil and gas declined 0.71 per cent. Commodities (0.61 per cent), power (0.49 per cent), utilities (0.37 per cent) and consumer discretionary (0.15 per cent) also dropped. Financial Services, industrials, IT, bankex, realty and services were among the gainers. Analysts said that the presence of resistance around the 23,100 level in the Nifty, along with a rise in the volatility index, India VIX, limited the upside. India VIX, which measures market volatility surged nearly 7 per cent to 23.13 points. "Nifty remained mostly volatile during the day as India awaits the final phase of the general election (on June 1)," Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst, LKP Securities said. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory. European markets were also quoting in the green. Wall Street ended with gains on Friday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.38 per cent to USD 82.44 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 944.83 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. Tel Aviv [Israel], May 27 (ANI/TPS): Archaeologists have discovered a remarkably well-preserved 2,300-year-old ring of a child from the Hellenistic period at an excavation in Jerusalem's City of David archaeological park, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced on Monday. The gold ring, adorned with a red precious stone -- believed to be garnet -- has a small diameter, leading experts to believe it was likely worn by a boy or girl. "I was sifting earth through the screen and suddenly saw something glitter. I immediately yelled, 'I found a ring, I found a ring!'" said Tehiya Gangate, a member of the excavation team. "Within seconds, everyone gathered around me, and there was great excitement. This is an emotionally moving find, not the kind you find every day. In truth, I always wanted to find gold jewelry, and I am very happy this dream came true -- literally a week before I went on maternity leave." The discovery "paints a new picture of the nature and stature of Jerusalem's inhabitants in the Early Hellenistic Period," said Tel Aviv University Professor Yuval Gadot. "Whereas in the past we found only a few structures and finds from this era, and thus most scholars assumed Jerusalem was then a small town, limited to the top of the southeastern slope ("City of David") and with relatively very few resources, these new finds tell a different story," Gadot explained. "It certainly seems that the city's residents were open to the widespread Hellenistic style and influences prevalent also in the eastern Mediterranean Basin," he added. The City of David is the original core of the ancient biblical city. Located just outside the southern walls of Jerusalem's Old City, it is considered one of Israel's most important archaeological sites. It is where King David established his capital and the site of many pivotal biblical events. The park is best known for Hezekiah's Tunnel, which was constructed by King Hezekiah to provide water to the city ahead of an Assyrian siege led by Sennacherib. Visitors can see the excavated remains of houses, cisterns, and fortifications, getting a glimpse into Jerusalem's ancient history. But imagine a future where a short chai and stretch break is enough to fully charge your electric car on a road trip. This once-futuristic vision is inching closer to reality, thanks to pioneering new study co-written by Ankur Gupta, a researcher of Indian origin at the University of Colorado. The research, which leverages the movement of tiny charged particles called ions, holds immense promise in revolutionising energy storage, making devices faster and more efficient than ever. Reports have suggested that this harnessing this technology could help charge a dead smartphone within a minute, or an electric car in just ten minutes. The charges that drive electricity work shockingly similar to fluids. For example, it isn’t entirely inaccurate to compare a battery to a pump that helps to maintain a constant flow of water. Gupta’s innovative research draws inspiration from similar fluidic processes, and pushes it to the extreme. The study repurposes chemical engineering techniques traditionally used for studying fluid flow in porous materials, such as oil reservoirs and water filtration systems. In particular, they focused on supercapacitors — battery-like energy storage devices used in EVs known for their rapid charging capabilities and longevity. “Supercapacitors are prized for their speed,” Gupta explained. “Our challenge was to accelerate the charging and discharging processes by enhancing ion movement efficiency.” You can think of an ion as a frenzied atom or molecule that carries a charge. This makes them highly reactive and constantly attracted to other particles with the opposite charge. The flow of ions makes part of what we know as current in our electronics. Meanwhile, supercapacitors store energy by accumulating ions in their pores. Gupta’s team discovered that ion movement at the intersections of these pores deviates significantly from what Kirchhoff’s law describes. This law, established in 1845, governs current flow in electrical circuits and is a cornerstone of electrical engineering. Ankur’s research is thus, quite literally, rewriting electrical engineering as we know it. By harnessing what they learned from this groundbreaking research, Gupta and his team believe that we can massively improve the movement of ions through supercapacitors, thereby improving the rate with which we charge and release energy. The implications of this research extend beyond personal electronics to electric vehicles and power grids, where efficient energy storage is crucial to balancing supply and demand. As the global demand for efficient and sustainable energy solutions grows, Gupta's research marks a pivotal step forward. Goodbye, EV range anxiety? Indian-origin researcher unveils technique to fully charge electric vehicles within minutes!

Telecom companies will have to pay GST along with the instalments paid towards spectrum charges, a senior official said. The Department of Telecom (DoT) will hold the next round of spectrum auction on June 6 for eight spectrum bands meant for mobile phone services. The base price for the auction has been set at Rs 96,317 crore. The spectrum will be assigned for 20 years and successful bidders will be allowed to make payments in 20 equal annual instalments in the coming mega auction. The official said Goods and Services Tax (GST) will have to be paid at 18 per cent by telecom companies along with each instalment. "The GST Council in its next meeting is likely to clarify the procedure for payment of GST by companies winning the bids during the spectrum auction," the official told PTI. The clarification will end confusion among field formations regarding the method for collection of GST in the auction process. All the available spectrum in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,300 MHz, 2,500 MHz, 3,300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands are part of the auction. The total frequencies being put under the hammer are valued at Rs 96,317 crore on base price. Moore Singhi Executive Director Rajat Mohan said under the GST law, spectrum payment is covered under licensing services for the right to use other natural resources on which tax is levied at 18 per cent. "Spectrum charges are payable in a phased manner over a period of time, and thereby tax payment shall also be staggered. The board should issue a clarification in this respect so as to avoid any litigation in this regard," Mohan said.<meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.47 per cent to USD 82.51 per barrel. "We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on positive domestic equities and expectations of fresh foreign inflows. However, a strong US dollar and a recovery in crude oil prices may cap sharp upside," Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas said. US markets will remain closed on Monday on Memorial Day holiday. Investors may remain cautious ahead of core PCE price index data later this week. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.80 to Rs 83.30, Choudhary added. On the domestic macroeconomic front, India's forex reserves jumped USD 4.549 billion to a new all-time high of USD 648.7 billion for the week ended May 17, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. This is the third consecutive week of increase in the overall kitty, which had increased by USD 2.561 billion to USD 644.151 billion in the previous reporting week ended May 17. While a higher resolution display would have offered better visuals, the LOQ 15 can handle itself well. The laptop is available in a single variant with 16GB LPDDR5 5600 MHz RAM and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD. I tested the laptop with several games, including The Finals, Alan Wake 2 and Counter Strike 2. The laptop was able to handle these games without any issues while playing in medium settings. The laptop is equipped with a 60Wh battery, which is on the smaller side. Battery life is usually an issue with gaming laptops and the LOQ 15 also faces the same. If you are unlikely to carry it with you or use it outdoors, you can easily consider the LOQ 15.
