The LA media startup scene is heating up.

Tech companies are flocking to Los Angeles as the next generation of entertainment professionals make their home there.

Social-media companies like Snapchat and TikTok set the stage by opening up US headquarters in the area. And a slew of media upstarts are following their lead.

Although LA has recently hosted some high-profile flops - Quibi lasted just six months, for example - many VCs remain bullish about the city's future as a startup hotspot. Outgoing Mayor Eric Garcetti, recently selected as US Ambassador to India by President Biden, made promoting LA as a tech hub a cornerstone of his eight-year tenure. And investors poured about $195 million into LA media and entertainment companies in the past year, according to data from Crunchbase.

"LA is the best consumer startup city in the world right now," Jeff Morris, founder of the VC firm Chapter One, tweeted last month. Morris named PearPop, Intro, Italic, Poparazzi, Popshop, and Whatnot as examples of new LA startups making waves. Several of his picks focus on trendy categories in entertainment like social-media influencers and livestreaming.
