Beware Zomato and Swiggy, Uber’s new food delivery game is much strategic and scalable

We have heard of stories where foods getting delivered through third party delivery people are delayed and stale. What’s more scary is often getting your Chilli Paneer with condom in the parcel or some nails in the dal tadka, if the news reports are to be believed.

But assuring quality of delivery just like their convenience of cabs, Uber has just rolled out UberEATS in India, with Mumbai being the first city to go live with the service. An on-demand food delivery app, UberEATS helps bringing food to consumers in a convenient and reliable manner. From specialty local favourites to everyday national brand names, UberEATS will make it possible for Indians to enjoy their favourite food everytime, everywhere. Bhavik Rathod has been appointed to lead UberEATS in India and spearhead UberEATS expansion across the country.

The concept of UberEATS was started in 2014 as a small delivery pilot in Los Angeles and launched as a separate application in Toronto in December 2015. In the past 18 months, it has grown incredibly fast, and is now a stand-alone app available in 26 countries and in 78 cities around the globe, including India.

How would UberEATS fare?

Zomato that started as restaurant discovery platform and later graduated to delivery segment is working fine. Then entered a few more start ups including Swiggy, Tinyowl and the likes in the same domain and then the coupon war took a new jump, with prices increased from restaurant menus and then discounts . A segment that didn’t seem to be scalable, which is why Uber’s India competitor Ola shut down the similar venture of Ola Cafe, Uber has started quite late but has some distinct strategies to scale it up.

UberEATS being a unique venture actually focuses on things that other competitors didn’t think of.

It’s not just click and deliver

For end users, this app helps to discover new foods and enjoy more of what their cities have to offer.

You can view food photos and allows broad cuisine search for a mouth-watering experience, while the suggestion carousels bubble up restaurants which users will love. The application of machine learning enables creation of individualized taste preferences, and customised restaurants and dishes for each user based on their past orders and current contextual information.

For those in a rush, UberEATS brings the intersection of convenience and reliability, UberEATs offers consumers the capability to schedule an order ahead of time. Consumers can order anytime up to an hour before the desired delivery window, and as far as a week in advance. The app lets the users track their order through every step of the process, so that consumers can monitor their order and be assured of their order being reliably delivered to their location.

If you are riding an Uber and feel hungry, you can get your food ordered at the destination. What's more? If you are passing by the restaurant, you can pick up your order by yourself.
Just like Uber app, the rating system is both ways, for consumers and restaurants. Also the delivery men have their ratings and identity just like the drivers of cabs. And the real time navigation of the delivery men cruising through city traffic would heat up your hunger.
