Telecom companies may hike tariffs by up to 17% after the general elections, predict analysts

Indian telecom companies may hike the tariff by 15 to 17% after the 2024 general elections. The tariff hike, led by Bharti Airtel is expected to take place around July-October. A report by Moneycontrol, citing analysts has said that Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel will be the biggest gainer of the tariff hike. The last major tariff hike was announced in December 2021 and it increased the prices by around 20%.

India’s two biggest telecom operators, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have once again reported an increase in their subscriber base, while the cash-strapped Vi reported a decline in its subscriber count. Vi, the only private telecom operator to have not rolled out 5G services in the country, lost 1.52 million subscribers in January 2024 according to data from market regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The telco had lost 1.38 million subscribers in December 2023.
