About 733 million people in the world are unable to read and write during a pandemic, UNESCO said. As we work toward raising awareness about the importance of literacy, here’s a look at Indian states that have shown improvement.

According to Census 2001, India’s literacy rate was 65.38%, and over two decades India has made significant progress in improving literacy. In India, about 77.7% of people can read and write, a recent report said. About 73.5% living in rural areas, and 87.7% of people living in urban areas are literate.

Kerala is the most literate state in India, with a 96.2% literacy rate, according to a report based on a National Statistical Office survey. After Kerala, Delhi has the highest literacy rate in the country at 88.7%. Whereas, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar have the worst literacy rate, as per the report.

At an all-India level, the male literacy rate is higher, at 84.7%, compared to 70.3% among women.

The report on ‘Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of the 75th round of National Sample Survey – from July 2017 to June 2018’ provides for state-wise detail of literacy rate among the persons aged seven years and above.

Literacy rate: 96.2%

Kerala has been the most literate state in India for a few years now. However, in Kerala also, male literacy (97.4%) is more than the female literacy rate (95.2%).

Delhi has emerged as the second most literate state/union territory in the country. In Delhi, 93.7% male population is literate in comparison to the 82.4% literate female population.
