Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the charts for the second consecutive year. The institute has been boosting its technical expertise with its advanced research labs. The researchers at the institute have been actively developing solutions like N-95 masks, face shields and interactive voice response systems to tackle the global pandemic.
A startup incubated by IIT-Madras, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government, has launched an IVRS — Interactive Voice Response Systems to report the Covid-19 cases in the state. The IVR gives advisory in real-time, if the user should take any precautions based on the travel history, symptoms and other personal information shared.
But IISc has managed to retain its position among the Indian institutes because of its performance score for teaching and research. The institute has had many citations to its name. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, researchers at the institute have developed antimicrobial material, and ways to recycle masks.
IIT Delhi, which has been ranked in the top three in the NIRF rankings 2020, is known for its technical education. The institute has scored highest in terms of research capabilities and perception. Recently, an IIT-D incubated startup ETEX developed an affordable multilayer mask — Kawach — with high filtration protection and a lightweight material.
Ranking fourth on the list, IIT Bombay has scored maximum on perception, graduation outcome and research and professional services. The institute has nearly 7,202 students enrolled across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
IIT Kharagpur, India’s oldest IIT ranks fifth in the annual ranking of higher education institutions. The institute has a total student intake of approximately 8,979, as per the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. IIT kharagpur has scored well for its graduate outcome and perception.
IIT Kanpur has scored above 70 points for its teaching and learning capabilities, and graduate outcomes. The institute has a total of 5,409 students studying in various courses and over 500 students were placed across industries, as of 2019.
Scoring best on the graduate outcome and teaching capabilities, IIT Guwahati also features in the top 10 list of national rankings. The institute has retained the seventh rank both in the overall ranking and among the engineering institutes.
"I am delighted that the overall ranking for IIT Guwahati has phenomenally improved. This is a recognition of the commitment, hard work and dedication of our faculty, students, staff and all stakeholders associated with the Institut,” the institute said.
Teaching and learning outcomes, and graduate outcomes are the two strong areas that have improved its rank among the national institutions.
Jawaharlal Nehru university has been ranked number two among the top universities in India, while it also ranks in the top 10 institutions in India. The university has a student base of 3,496 people and ranks high on graduate outcome and outreach and inclusivity.
IIT Roorkee ranks high on the effects of teaching and learning programmes. The institute has nearly 5,728 students enrolled in engineering and other postgraduate courses. Recently, the researchers at the institute have developed an algorithm to categorise brain tumors.
