Technology giant Google’s today’s doodle is a tribute to one of the versatile actresses of Hindi cinema, Nargis Dutt.

Born as Fatima Rashid but known by her screen name Nargis, the actress made her screen debut as a child artist in Talash-E-Haq in 1935. However, her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna.

Nargis garnered worldwide acclaim for her role of Radha in the Academy Award-nominated film Mother India (1957). Her performance in this movie, later, won her Best Actress trophy at the Filmfare Awards.

On March 11, 1958, Nargis married with her Mother India co-star Sunil Dutt. Together, the couple was blessed with three children: actor Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Dutt and former Congress lawmaker Priya Dutt. During the same year, she was the first film actress to be conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award.

The actress passed away on May 3, 1981 owing to pancreatic cancer.
