  • Universal Account Number is unique to each member of the EPFO.
  • An employee cannot have two UANs.
  • Before you create your UAN, keep your Aadhaar card and mobile phone handy.
To check your Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) account, it is important to have a 12-digit unique identification number called Universal Account Number (UAN). Although the UAN can be generated by the employer on whose payroll the employee is working, a user can create the UAN on their own to benefit from EPFO’s online services such as checking your PF balance, withdrawal, PF loan applications and others.

The UAN would also help the user view EPF balances that are linked to the user's account. Users can also transfer their EPF balance from former employers to the current employer with the help of the UAN. If you are looking to create the UAN online, here’s how you can do it.

Create UAN online:

Before you go on to create the UAN, keep your Aadhaar card and phone handy to enter important details and receive the one-time password (OTP), respectively.
  • Visit the Member-e-Sewa page on the EPFO portal.
  • Under the Important Links section, click on "Activate UAN".
  • Select the Aadhaar option and enter your Aadhaar number.
  • You will then have to enter your personal details: Name, date of birth, and mobile number, along with the CAPTCHA code.
  • Now, you will have to click on the "Get Authorisation Pin" button.
  • A new screen will appear containing the information that you had given earlier.
  • Ensure that the information is correct and hit the “Agree” checkbox.
  • Now, you have to enter the 4-digit OTP you received on your mobile phone.
  • Click on "Validate OTP and Activate UAN".
  • Your UAN is now created.
You can check the details and authenticity of your UAN by logging into the EPFO portal. Another important thing to note is that an employee can have only one UAN number. Although the member ID and EPF account number change with the change of an employer, the UAN number stays the same.
