India has the third highest number of billionaires in the world, behind the US and China. The country has a long list of billionaires, from Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries and the country’s richest man to Savitri Jindal, the country’s richest woman.

Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, who heads the Adani Group have been competing for the top spot, with Adani even taking it for some time, before being pushed down after the Hindenburg saga.

The stock market rally ahead of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections in the country has boosted the wealth of a lot of individuals.

According to Forbes data, India had 200 billionaires in April 2024, up from 169 reported during the same period last year. The wealth of India’s richest is now close to a trillion at a record total of $954 billion, up 41% from $675 billion last year.

The US has 2,781 billionaires and China, which is at the second position has 406 billionaires.

Germany and Russia are ranked below India, with 132 and 120 billionaires respectively.

Gautam Adani, who was hit by short-seller Hindenburg gained $36.8 billion since March 2023 after getting a favourable decision from the Supreme Court of India. Despite this, Adani is behind his peak of $90 billion in the Forbes’ 2022 list.
