Despite its decision to hold back such a kind of declaration, the WHO was forced to declare a global health emergency towards the end of January 2019 when coronavirus had taken its huge toll in China and had already spread to many other countries just a month after it had emerged first in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, China. The developments observed with the spread of COVID-19 has made the global health community view this as one of the deadliest outbreaks of an epidemic the world has witnessed so far. Here are the recent stats on COVID-19 to show the extent of its spread in the world countries.
Total cases
Till date, 98,428 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the world in all the countries put together. There had been 3,383 deaths.
The newly labelled member of Coronavirus COVID-19 has affected 60 countries around the globe till date in addition to 1 international conveyance namely the Diamond Princess cruise ship that is being harbored in Yokohama in Japan.
What is happening in China
Bruce Alyward, the head of an expert mission to China highly appreciated the drastic containment and quarantine measures taken by the Chinese government to combat and curb the spread of corona virus. Issuing a warning to the global community to get ready to manage COVID-19 epidemic in a larger scale and to learn from China’s successful mission of fighting the virus, he said, “Access the expertise of China. They have done this at speed and they know what they are doing. They are really, really good at it.”
He added, “China’s epidemic has peaked and the numbers are on their way down, thanks to an unprecedented engagement at every level by the Chinese. Hundreds of thousands of people in China did not get COVID-19 because of this aggressive response.”
Call for action
China’s National Health Commission has reported a massive drop in new infections, but the cases of the virus attack outside China is sharply on the rise. It is time that the global community learns from the country’s example and expedite the comprehensive measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
