Three labourers died of asphyxiation at an illegal coal mine in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, police said on Sunday. A case has been registered against four persons for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and efforts are on to apprehend them, an official said. The victims, Lakshman Dabhi (35), Khodabhai Makwana (32) and Viram Keraliya (35), were digging at a mine near Bhet village in Thangadh taluka of the district when they died of asphyxiation on Saturday, the official from Muli Muli police station said. The trio did not have helmets, masks or other safety equipment when they were working for the accused, he said. As per the first information report (FIR), the accused did not provide helmets or other safety equipment to the deceased while employing them to dig a well. They died after inhaling gas from the well, it stated. A case was registered against Jashabhai Keraliya, Janak Aniyaria, Khimjibhai Saradia, and Kalpesh Parmar, the official said. Bodies of the deceased labourers have been sent for post-mortem, he added. Earlier in February, three workers died after inhaling toxic gas that emanated after a blast triggered by gelatin sticks for an illegal mining operation in the district.<meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

A special court here on Tuesday remanded former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual abuse, to judicial custody till June 24. The 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court had on June 12 remanded him to the custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the cases against him, till June 18. The 33-year-old had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the recent polls. SIT officials arrested Revanna soon after he landed at Bengaluru airport from Germany on May 31. He had left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to the polls. A 'Blue Corner Notice' seeking information on his whereabouts had earlier been issued by the Interpol, following a request by the SIT via the Central Bureau of Investigation. Revanna was arrested in a case registered against him in Holenarasipura in Hassan district on April 28. He was accused of sexually harassing a 47-year-old former maid. He has been booked in three cases of sexual assault. There are also charges of rape against him. The cases of sexual abuse came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26. JD(S) suspended him from the party after cases were filed against him.<meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

Bengaluru court remands Prajwal Revanna to judicial custody till June 24

Mumbai, An FIR registered here pertaining to alleged illegal gambling and cyber fraud worth Rs 15,000 crore linked to Mahadev betting app has been transferred to the Mumbai crime branch for investigation, an official said on Thursday. Considering the scope of probe into the case, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has transferred it to the crime branch, he said. The FIR was registered earlier this month at Matunga police station in Mumbai against 32 people, including the "promoter" of the app Saurabh Chandrakar, Ravi Uppal, Shubham Soni and others for allegedly committing the fraud since 2019, police earlier said. As per the FIR, the accused have defrauded people of nearly Rs 15,000 crore. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently claimed a forensic analysis and a statement made by a 'cash courier' led to "startling allegations" that Mahadev betting app promoters have paid about Rs 508 crore to the Chhattisgarh chief minister so far, and that "these are subject matter of investigation". Later, the BJP released a video of Shubham Soni saying he was the owner of the app and had the "proof" of paying Rs 508 crore so far to Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel. The chief minister has rejected the claim. On November 5, the Centre issued blocking orders against 22 illegal betting platforms, including the Mahadev app, on ED's request. The action of banning the 22 illegal betting platforms follows investigations conducted by the ED against an illegal betting app syndicate and subsequent raids in connection with the Mahadev app in Chhattisgarh. The Chhattisgarh police have registered at least 75 FIRs in connection with the app and the ED has also conducted a probe into the case, the official said.<meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

Mahadev betting app case registered in Mumbai transferred to crime branch

A 28-year-old Indian-origin fraudster who targeted elderly and vulnerable victims in a scam impersonating a police officer or a bank official has been sentenced by a London court to eight years of imprisonment on nine counts of fraud by false representation. Kishan Bhatt was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, after pleading guilty in November last year at the same court, the Metropolitan Police said. An investigation by the force's Specialist Economic Crime team found Bhatt had defrauded nine victims out of more than GBP 260,000 in total, besides numerous further attempts that were blocked by financial institutions or jewellers. "Fraud is far from a victimless offence, and the repercussions for the numerous victims involved in this situation extend beyond mere financial loss," said Detective Constable Sarah Cook, from the Met's Economic Crime division. "The emotional toll has been immense, leading to severe distress and devastation for those affected. Without the bank's goodwill gesture, these victims would have been deprived of their life savings," she said. "The outcome demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Met in relentlessly pursuing individuals like Bhatt who engage in fraudulent activities. Our determination remains resolute in ensuring that such offenders are held accountable and brought to justice," she added. The Met Police were able to identify victims in London and Norfolk, eastern England after a jeweller in London's Hatton Garden area contacted police about an elderly, vulnerable woman attending their shop to buy gold. Bhatt's accomplice Artiom Kiseliov, 35, was sentenced to four-and-a-half-years' imprisonment last year in April on one count of fraud by false representation at Kingston Crown Court, outside London in Kingston Upon Thames. Kiseliov's arrest followed a suspicious jeweller contacting police in relation to a 90-year-old victim who had been contacted by a man claiming to be a police officer who had arrested a male with her bank card. The caller told the old lady she needed to protect her money and to do this she needed to invest in gold and jewellery as fraudsters would not be able to access it this way. She was instructed to buy expensive watches in excess of GBP 90,000 over a two-week period and then Kiseliov attended her home address to collect these on a number of occasions. She was advised that the men would keep them safe for her. In January 2022, Bhatt and Kiseliov drove her to Hatton Garden in London in an attempt to get her to buy gold as she believed she was helping the police with their investigation. The men had told her that the jewellers were corrupt and they would value the gold she bought, which would confirm the corruption. The jewellers asked for identification and told the woman to return another day whilst they completed ID checks and ordered the gold to store. She was driven to further jewellery stores by the fraudsters and made purchases, however, these were still pending when police were alerted and were cancelled by the jewellers. Met Police detectives launched an investigation and identified the vehicle Bhatt and Kiseliov used to transport the victim to these jewellers. Further enquiries obtained a phone number for Bhatt under an alias he was using. The police were able to establish that between September 2020 and May 2022, Bhatt targeted nine victims - aged between 29 and 90 - who were approached whilst he posed as a bank employee, a landlord and a police officer. Once he had gained their trust, he transferred money out of their accounts. The majority of the money has been refunded to the victims by banks, the Met Police said.<meta content="cms.next" name="cmsei" />

Indian-origin fraudster jailed for 8 years for targeting elderly victims in UK

The police have so far managed to nab four of the accused, including one woman, who have been identified as Gurjant Singh (31), Navjot Singh (30), Satpal Singh (28) and Gurpreet Kaur (30). Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), R. Sathiyasundaram, said a PCR call was received at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, informing that around 15 'Income Tax officials' have conducted a raid without the police and seized the mobile phones of all the family members. When the the complainant asked the accused to show a search warrant, the accused threatened the victims by saying that they had guns. "The accused then started to open the cupboards, beds etc. on the ground floor and the first floor. Some of them even molested the complainant," the DCP said. The accused snatched the mobile phones of the family members, along with a hand bag containing one gold ornament and Rs 15,000 in cash, and fled from the spot. However, as the house occupants were shouting during the commotion, the neighbours heard their cries and informed the police. The police were able to nab four persons, while the rest of the accused fled from the spot. One Bolero car and ID cards of Anti Corruption Foundation of India were also recovered by the police. A search to nab the other accused is currently underway, the officer said. Delhi cops nab Special 26-like scamsters who pose as Income Tax officials

NCMEC is the largest clearing house for the CSAI content shared on online platforms. According to the report, India accounts for 3.88 million such cases filed between 1998 and 2017. This is despite the fact that India is estimated to have merely 11.9 per 1,000 internet users — which is way less than Iraq and Thailand. As per the Ministry of Law and Justice, there are over 100 pending child abuse cases under the (POCSO) act — Protection of Children from Sexual Offences — across 389 districts in India, News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/389-indian-districts-have-over-100-pending-cases-of-child-abuse-2325335.html">reported</a>. The new amendments in the act seeks a gender-neutral approach on offences against children, aiming to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/protection-of-children-from-sexual-offences-amendment-bill-2019-passed-in-lok-sabha/articleshow/70492301.cms">protect its 430 million children</a>, regardless of the gender. Under this, those convicted relating to child pornography will receive a five-year jail term. The other countries which rank high in CSAI are Mexico, Bangladesh, United States, Brazil, Vietnam, Algeria and Pakistan. However, India, Indonesia and Thailand constitute of more than a third (37%) of the cases reported. Overall, of the 23 million cases, nearly two in every five reports (40%) were filed in 2017. The NCMEC received 5.7 lakh reports during the first ten years of operation. “The data shows that ten years ago, 70% of CSAI reports reflected abuse in the Americas. Today, 68% of reports are related to abuse in Asia, 19% in the Americas, 6% in Europe, and 7% in Africa. Also, 84% of the detected CSAI images and 91% of the videos are reported only once,” TOI <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/india-tops-list-on-reported-child-sexual-abuse-imagery/articleshow/71383544.cms">reported</a> citing the findings from the report. The countries are flagged on the basis of the locations of the IP addresses of such abuse, and victims. However, change in geographical locations due to VPN and proxy networks may affect the accuracy of the results.
