Two armed suspects remain at large after allegedly killing a police officer Tuesday in the Chicago suburb of Fox Lake.

A third suspect had been captured as of Tuesday afternoon, Illinois State Police Sgt. Matt Boerwinkle told CNN.

Police are continuing an extensive search of the area north of Chicago for the remaining suspects.

The officer told his department early Tuesday he was pursuing three suspects on foot, and once backup arrived, they found him shot but still alive, Lake County sheriff's office Sgt. Christopher Covelli said in a news briefing.

Police identified the slain Fox Lake officer as Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a 32-year veteran of the department who was married with four children, according to the Chicago Tribune.

When backup had initially arrived, Gliniewicz was found stripped of his gun and other gear, according to the Tribune.

The suspects were described as a black male and two white males, Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose said.

Those who were involved in the manhunt could be seen wielding assault rifles and while dressed in camouflage. Helicopters and search dogs were also in use.
