Georgia and Maryland top the list of states where people are burdened with the most personal debt.

According to a recent study by My LendingTree, residents in Georgia owe an average of $45,778 in non-mortgage debt while those in Maryland owe just a little less, with $45,663.

Researchers at My LendingTree analyzed more than 370,000 anonymized credit reports to see which states have the highest and lowest non-mortgage debts in 2022.

Non-mortgage debt is any other type of debt that's not secured by real estate, such as personal loans, student loans, and credit. Student and car loans make up the majority of personal debt for the average American, MoneyGeek reported earlier this year.

For scale, the average American — aged 30-39 years old — owes around $26,532, according to Debt.org. data, which was updated in April 2023.

These are the 25 US states with the highest rates of personal debt.
