West Bengal assembly elections: BJP has the most number of candidates with criminal cases, followed by CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress in Phase 2
  • The race for 294 seats in West Bengal will start with voting over eight rounds from March 27-April 29.
  • Even though there has always been much talk about political candidates and their criminal history, this year’s assembly election once again sees candidates who have criminal cases on their names.
  • In fact, 6 out of 30 constituencies are ‘red alert’ as they have three or more candidates with criminal records.
Whether it is Mamata Banerjee's bid for a third consecutive term as West Bengal Chief Minister or the Bharatiya Janata Party's challenge to Trinamool Congress' rule in the state⁠— candidates with criminal charges against them continue to remain important players in their respective teams.

There are 294 seats in the Bengal state assembly, the polling for which will take place between March 27 and April 29.

As per data released by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of 171 candidates analysed fighting the elections in Phase 2, 43 (25%) candidates had declared criminal cases while 36 (21%) had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

In fact, 6 out of the 30 analysed constituencies by ADR are put on ‘red alert’ as they have three or more candidates with criminal records.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has the most number of candidates with criminal cases against their name. As much as 57% of BJP candidates have declared criminal cases against them, while 53% have recorded severe criminal cases against them.

Bharati Ghosh, BJP’s candidate from Debra constituency and a former IPS officer has as many as 19 cases registered against her name. Meanwhile, BJP’s Barun Pramanik, who has got a ticket from the Gosaba constituency has 27 cases registered against him.

Dipankar Jana, who is one of the richest candidates, also features in the list of those with criminal cases.

The All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee has 27% candidates who have declared criminal cases, while 17% have serious cases registered against them. Samir Kumar Jana, from Patharpratima constituency, has an attempt to murder case against him.

Meanwhile other candidates like Manturam Pakhira, from Kakdwip constituency, Swapan Naskar, from Haldia, have declared criminal cases.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has 47% candidates who have declared criminal cases. Meanwhile, 40% have serious criminal cases in their name. Manoranjan Patra, of CPI(M) who is fighting from Taldangra constituency has in fact declared case related to murder (IPC Section-302) against himself.

The Indian National Congress has 22% of its candidates in both the categories – criminal and serious criminal cases registered against their name.

The BSP’s candidates have 29% in both categories – criminal and serious criminal cases registered against their name. While the Communist Party of India may have 50% of its candidates with criminal cases registered against their name, it has zero candidates with serious criminal cases.

The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has 11% of its candidates who have criminal cases against their name, while 7% have serious criminal cases.

Of all the independent candidates in West Bengal, who are contesting the elections, 9% have criminal cases, while 9% have serious criminal cases against their name.
