  • Since then, he has been holed up in his official residence.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro hasn't been in public much since his election loss because he has a skin infection and "can't wear pants," Vice President Hamilton Mourao $4 earlier this week.

Mourao said that Bolsonaro, 67, who lost a tightly-contested $4 last month, has been holed up in his official residence because of a skin infection, known as erysipelas, on his leg.

"It is a health issue. He has a leg injury, a skin infection," Mourao told O Globo ."He cannot wear pants. You want him to come here wearing shorts?"

Erysipelas is a skin disease caused by bacteria that enters the body through poorly healed wounds. Symptoms include swollen, shiny, and red skin that is sensitive to the touch, $4

In more severe cases, blisters can also form.

Bolsonaro has been keeping a low profile since he lost the election against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also known as Lula, on October 30. Da Silva received 50.83% of the votes, compared to Bolsonaro's 49.17%.

Three days after his election loss, Bolsonaro, who has been dubbed the "Trump of the Tropics," made a short speech from his official residence in Brasilia, in which he didn't formally concede the race nor offered to congratulate Lula.

His chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, later said the government would transition power.

Since his speech, Bolsonaro has retreated from the public spotlight despite still officially remaining in office until January 1. He has barely left his residence and has stayed quiet on social media.

Bolsonari $4 since taking office, mostly stemming from a near-fatal knife attack during his presidential campaign in 2018. Since the attack, he has undergone abdominal surgery at least four times.
