Railways will continue to make losses, Budget 2017 does nothing for it



For the first time in the history of the country since 1924, the practice of having a separate railway budget was shelved and it was presented as a part of the Annual Budget by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

At first glance, the railway announcements seemed to address quite a few pertinent issues that would guarantee enhanced comfort for every citizen. But, a look deeper at the allocations raises some convcerns.

Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Railways seemed quite impressed by the announcements. "Path breaking budget, a new era has begun." he said.

The Railway announcements focused on four key areas:
1. Passenger safety
2. Cleanliness
3. Financial and accounting reforms
4. Capital and development

1. The Capital and Development expenditure on railways in 2017-18 to be Rs 1,31,000 crore.

2.The Railways safety fund will be at Rs 1 lakh crore in over 5 years.

3. Unmanned crossings will be eliminated by 2020.

4.Dedicated tourism and pilgrimage trains will be launched.

5. 25 stations have been identified for redevelopment

6. A 22% rise in the Railways Budget was announced

7. Railway lines of 3,500 km to be commissioned in 2017-2018

1. Service charges on ticket booking on IRCTC will be withdrawn. Cashless transactions has gone up to 68% from 58%.

2. A new metro rail policy will be announced. This will open up new jobs for the youth.

3. Coach mitra facility announced- single window interface to register all coach related complaints. Additionally, SMS service "clean my coach" already a go.

4. Railway related state-run companies like IRCON and IRCTC to be listed on stock exchanges.

5. Railways will integrate end to end transport solutions for selected commodities through partnerships

6. As many as 500 rail stations will be made differently abled-friendly by providing lifts and escalators.

7. Indian Railways aspires to feed about 7000 stations with solar power in the next few years
