10 McDonald's menu items you can't buy in the US – from Switzerland's 'McRaclette' to Australia's 'Big Brekkie Burger'
  • McDonald's popular international menus have attracted a big following among food bloggers.
  • The chain even offers a rotating global menu at the restaurant inside its Chicago headquarters.

A TikTok food vlogger who goes by the handle karissaeats generated millions of views describing her recent experience eating international foods at McDonald's.

In Italy, she ate mini-calzone-looking pastries dubbed Panzerotti. They were stuffed with Italian tomato and mozzarella.

"These were better than some of the pizzas I've had here," she said in her post, now viewed by 11.8 million people.

She also raved over two McFlurry concoctions -- one mixed with dark chocolate and hazelnuts; the other mixed with chocolate-flavored Smarties.

Karissa's European eating binge at McDonald's restaurants underscores US travelers' excitement when they visit the Golden Arches while traveling abroad. Many food blogs have pointed to these must-try global McDonald's menu items that cater to locals in nearly 27,000 restaurants outside the US.

According to the Wall Street Journal, these local menu items make up about 30% of McDonald's food sales.

The chain's international menus have such a big following that McDonald's created a rotating global menu in 2018. It is only available at the McDonald's inside the chain's headquarters in Chicago. Still, those items represent a fraction of the palate-pleasing fast food items found at McDonald's restaurants worldwide.

Insider has compiled a list of some interesting cuisine from India, Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Switzerland.

India: Maharaja Mac

India: Maharaja Mac
McDonald's India

McDonald's in India has a wide range of meals that cater to local tastes, including the Big Spicy Paneer Wrap, the Butter Paneer Grilled Burger, the Butter Chicken Grilled Burger, the McAloo Tikki Burger, and the Dosa Masala Burger.

But the most legendary burger on the McDonald's menu in India is the Maharaja Mac, created as a non-beef stand-in for the chain's famed Big Mac.

McDonald's said it is one of the "tallest burgers innovated" by the chain, which has more than 40,000 stores around the world. The burger is made with two flame-grilled chicken patties layered with jalapeño, onion, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce and dressed with habanero sauce.

"It was a complicated sandwich; it had never been done before," Vikram Ogale, a McDonald's India supply chain executive, said in the McDonald's India food blog "Good Food Journey" in 2016.

In a 2022 BuzzFeed poll of McDonald's India foods the Chicken Maharaja Mac was the landslide winner in the burger category. The veggie version came in second.

McDonald's has more than 500 restaurants in India. Besides innovative burgers, the menu features a variety of McWraps. The Big Spicy Paneer and the Big Spicy Chicken wraps were the two most popular items in the BuzzFeed poll.

The paneer wrap is stuffed with the ubiquitous Indian cheese. Because paneer doesn't melt, restaurant chains like to use it as a protein substitute for vegetarians.

The battered and fried paneer is dressed with a mayo-based sauce, mustard, lettuce, and onions. The "Good Food Journey" blog described the wrap as having a "spicy batter coating of filling and a flavorful paneer patty."

Switzerland: McRaclette

Switzerland: McRaclette
McDonald's Switzerland

American food writer and author Matt Goulding described this fan favorite as a "surreal McDonald's experience."

"The great classic that everyone has been waiting for is finally back in your McDonald's Switzerland restaurant," according to the current Swiss menu.

The McRaclette is a beef burger with pickles, onions, three slices of Swiss raclette cheese and a raclette sauce. When it comes to cheese, McDonald's goes uber-traditional with this Swiss creation.

Raclette is a semi-hard cheese made from cow's milk. The name, which means "to scrape," is derived from its legendary use as cheese melted over an open flame. The melting cheese is then scraped onto a plate.

In a 2013 Slate review, Goulding described the burger this way: "It arrives on a chewy roll with crunchy wisps of lettuce, a garlicky mayonnaise, a thick patty that stretched well beyond the borders of the bread, and, most importantly, a slice of ripe raclette cheese, mid-meltdown."

After taking a bite, Goulding said, "a stream of juice dribbles down my chin. The patty is fashioned from a local breed of grass-fed cow common in French steakhouses. The cheese lends the same viscous coverage of a slice of American cheese, but with a pleasant nutty undertone. Paired with a spring salad and washed down with a cold Heineken, it makes for a kind of surreal McDonald's experience."

Last year, the World of Buzz blog called the Chicken Foldover one of the best six seasonal burgers sold at McDonald's around the globe.

Dubbed the "Ramadan special," McDonald's Chicken Foldover "features two scrumptious grilled chicken patties wrapped in flatbread and topped with fresh mixed veggies and a special sauce," according to the blog.

"This is one of the most unique menu items from McDonald's because it branches away from their classic burgers. We love how the toasted flatbread goes really well with the grilled patty. Though it seems like a simple substitute, it really enhances the overall taste and texture!"
