  • The Oppo Find X7 Ultra is the company’s latest flagship smartphone.
  • The Find X7 Ultra is equipped with the company’s best-ever camera setup.
  • Here is my review of the device and its powerful quad 50MP rear camera setup.
Cameras on smartphones have improved a lot over the years, with smartphone companies making cameras a key part of their devices, especially in the flagship segment. Companies like Oppo have gone on to partner with legacy camera companies like Swedish photography giant Hasselblad to improve the cameras on their smartphones.

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra is the company’s latest flagship offering, which was launched in China earlier this year. The device features a quad 50MP camera setup, with Hasselblad tuning and colour science.

While the device will not be launched in India, we tested it to find out if the cameras are as good as advertised.

I recently visited Shenzhen, China to Oppo’s headquarters to learn more about the device and the company’s partnership with Hasselblad. During my visit, I tested the device’s camera prowess in various conditions.

Here’s my review of the Oppo Find X7 Ultra.

Design and display

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra features a premium design, offering a dual-tone design with polished metal on top and vegan leather at the bottom. The device comes in three colour options – Ocean Blue, Sepia Brown and Tailored Black. I tested the Tailored Black colour variant, which comes with a black colour vegan leather at the back.

The Find X7 Ultra comes with curved edges and feels premium to hold. This is one of those devices that you can use without a case – without worrying about it slipping or getting dirty.

The first thing that you notice about the device is its large camera module. The Find X7 Ultra features a large circular camera module that houses a quad-camera setup and Hasselblad branding. The LED flash is placed in the top left corner at the back.

The large module does result in some wobble when the device is used while being placed on a flat surface but it is not a big issue.

The device is on the heavier side and weighs 221 grams. This is due to the large camera module at the back, alongside the 5,000mAh battery.

The smartphone features volume rockers and a power button on the right side.

The alert slider on the smartphone has been placed on the left side. The alert slider comes with an orange touch, adding to the premium feel of the device. It offers three modes – ring, vibrate and VIP. The VIP mode turns off the camera, location and microphone on the device – a nifty feature when you are looking for some privacy.

On the top, it comes with a secondary microphone, a speaker grille, and an IR blaster.

At the bottom, the device features the SIM tray, USB Type-C port, the primary microphone, and the speaker grille.

Coming to the display, the smartphone features a 6.82-inch Quad HD+ LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The display on the device is vibrant and offers a peak brightness of 4,500 nits.

Performance

In terms of performance, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor coupled with up to 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 internal storage.

Considering the chipset that powers it, performance is not an issue for the device. It can easily handle everything that you throw its way and then some, just like other devices that are equipped with this chipset.

I played popular games such as Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty: Mobile on the smartphone. The smartphone offers a great gaming experience and even with high-quality graphics enabled, I did not notice any stuttering or lag during my testing.

Coming to the battery, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, coupled with 100W SuperVOOC fast charging support and 50W wireless charging support. It also supports 10W reverse wireless charging.

The device offers over a day’s battery life with regular gaming, streaming content and some normal browsing.

Camera

Coming to the highlight of the device, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra features a quad camera setup at the back, including two periscope telephoto sensors – a first for a smartphone. The sensors provide up to 6x optical zoom, equivalent to a 135mm focal length.

The primary camera on the device is a 50MP f/1.8 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor with OIS. It comes with a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera with Sony LYT-600 sensor, a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera with Sony IMX890 sensor and OIS and a 50MP 6X periscope telephoto with Sony IMX858 sensor.

The cameras have been tuned in partnership with camera giant Hasselblad, with the companies working on the colour science to improve the colours, especially the skin tones. The company has developed the HyperTone Image Engine to improve the camera performance.

Oppo tests the device at its Intelligent Imaging Lab, where it uses robots to capture 75,000 images in over 16 life-like scenarios in different lighting conditions in 500 different points mapped by the engineering team. The photos are then analysed to see how the device performs. This extensive testing is visible in how the Find X7 Ultra performs.

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra comes with a Master Mode, which has been calibrated to match the characteristics of the Hasselblad X2D 100C camera.

In addition to the usual RAW Mode, the device comes with RAW MAX mode, which supports capturing 50MP images with all four sensors. The RAW MAX mode is Adobe Certified, enabling easy post-processing of images.

The Find X7 Ultra performs well when it comes to daylight photography. Even a user who has no experience with photography can capture excellent pictures with the device without much effort.

The device can capture good details, thanks to the 1-inch sensor included. It offers excellent colour reproduction and balance.

The portrait images captured with the device turned out well, with good edge detection and subject details.

Coming to low light photography, the Find X7 Ultra’s cameras capture images with good details and no noise.

The device comes with a 32MP selfie camera, that can capture good images in both daylight and low light conditions.

Verdict

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra is an excellent feature-packed smartphone that ticks all the right boxes, including a premium design, powerful hardware, vibrant display and excellent cameras. If you are in the market for a powerful smartphone with excellent cameras, the Find X7 Ultra is the ideal option.

The fact that the device is not available in India at present means that you cannot get your hands on it unless you get it from China. The Chinese variant runs on the Chinese version of the software and may be a bit difficult to use as a daily driver.
