Bill Maher says he 'loved' talking to Elon Musk but he 'doesn't get' his beliefs on making more babies and colonizing Mars

Bill Maher said he "loved" interviewing Elon Musk but he doesn't understand his beliefs about making more babies and colonizing Mars, on a Monday episode of his podcast "Club Random."

The host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" spoke with the Tesla CEO last month for his HBO show, adding on the podcast that they also hung out afterwards.

Maher was full of praise for the world's second-richest person, describing him as "a very sincere guy who's not motivated by money" and "at the top of the intellectual game."

But while he was largely complimentary on the podcast, Maher added: "I don't agree with everything."

"Let's have more babies and raise them on Mars. I don't get that part," he said. "I think we have too many people on this planet and I think I can prove it, resources wise."

Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, most recently predicted in February that humans will go to Mars within 10 years but cautioned that he's "congenitally optimistic."

A year earlier he'd suggested 2029 as the deadline, and a year before that, predicted SpaceX would have humans on Mars by 2026.

The father-of-nine has also repeatedly made clear his belief that declining birth rates are a big threat to humanity.

"Doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis," Musk tweeted last July, after Insider's Julia Black reported he fathered twins with a Neuralink executive.

"If there aren't enough people for Earth, then there definitely won't be enough for Mars," he said last January.

Maher said on his podcast that he thinks Musk isn't being motivated by profit, even if he doesn't agree with him.

"It's not because he's making money off Mars or babies, it's because he really believes that," he said.

Musk's actual plans for Mars colonization involve sending 1 million people there, and Starlink's terms of service require customers to recognize that Mars is a free planet ungoverned by Earth's laws.

Whether the billionaire plans to use that for his own gain is unclear. SpaceX did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
