- Here’s everything you need to know about Google’s new data deletion policy.
Google, in its blog post, has announced a new data deletion policy for users. It aims to offer users more clarity and control over their in-app data.
The new policy is aimed at applications that require or allow users to create an account on the app. Developers will now be required to provide an option to initiate account and data deletion by the user, from within the app and online using a website.
This means it will become easier for users to delete their account and app data without contacting the developer several times. The requirement for developers to also offer a website for data deletion means that you won’t even have to reinstall the application to have your account and data deleted.
Developers will have to add a “Data deletion” section in the Play Store listing, offering “account deletion” and “account cleanup” options. Google has offered developers until December 7, 2023, to comply with the new policy. Developers will be able to apply for an extension till May 31, 2024, to comply.
While you may want to delete your data, you may still want to retain your account. As part of the new policy, users can either delete their account and associated data, or just the user data. By doing this, they will secure their data without having to go through the hassle of creating a new account next time.
Developers that are required to retain certain data for fraud prevention or regulatory compliance will have to disclose such data retention policies.
