  • Apple released iPadOS 16 with Stage Manager.
  • Some iPadOS 16 features are reserved for M1 and M2 chips iPads.
  • Below, check out the new features of iPadOS 16.
In June 2022, Apple previewed the latest version of the iPad’s operating system, iPadOS 16.1, with the Weather app for the first time and a host of new features and updates to apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, and more.

Though iOS 16 has been available since September, according to MacRumors, Apple delayed iPadOS 16 to add improvements to the Stage Manager feature.

With the launch of the new OS for the iPhone and iPad, Apple has ended support of iOS 16 for some iPhones like the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE 2016, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. You can only download and run iOS 16 if you have an iPhone 8 or newer version.

Regarding iPads, here are the generations that will receive iPadOS 16 updates.

  • iPad: Fifth-gen and up
  • iPad Mini: Fifth-gen and up
  • iPad Air: Third-gen and up
  • 9.7-inch and 10.5-inch iPad Pro
  • 11-inch iPad Pro: First-gen and up
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro: First-gen and up

How to install iPadOS 16?

Before downloading the iOS 16 on your iPad, we highly recommend backing up your iPad. To do so, Go to Settings, tap on your name at the top and then select iCloud.

From there, tap on iCloud Backup and toggle it on. Then, tap on Back Up Now. Once it’s done, you are ready to install iPadOS 16.

For those new to iPadOS 16, we have listed some of the best features.

Stage Manager

The Stage Manager feature is the reason iPadOS 16 was delayed. This feature automatically organizes apps and windows, making it easy to switch between tasks. With the help of this feature, for the first time, iPad users can create overlapping windows of different sizes in a single view.

Stage Manager is available on selected devices like iPad with M1 and M2 chips.

Display modes

This new feature is available on iPad Pro models. It allows a 12.9- inch iPad Pro to display reference colour in addition to SDR and HDR.

Display Zoom lets you choose options like larger text or more space in addition to the default view. The Display modes is available under the Display and Brightness section of the Settings app.

Messages updates

In the Messages app, users can unsend or edit a message. Users can also retrieve deleted messages and mark a conversation as unread. Also, the FaceTime SharePlay feature now works in the Messages app, allowing you to watch TV shows and movies while chatting with friends.

Weather app

The much-awaited Weather app for iPad is here. It is identical to the iPhone Weather app, providing 10-day forecasts along with information about air quality, UV index, wind speed, and more.

Mail updates

Apple has added some new features to the Mail app, like Undo Send, which gives users up to 30 seconds to change their mind about an email they have sent out. Also, you get reminders to follow up on emails and messages.

New gaming features

With the release of iPadOS 16, Apple is improving gaming on iPads. iPadOS 16 is now gaining support for Metal 3, a new graphics API that the company is simultaneously rolling out to Macs. This new API claims it will enable the iPad to play much more graphically demanding games.
