Spotify banned four podcasts associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory on Monday, leaving the movement with few places to turn.
A Friday $4 from Media Matters for America, a progressive nonprofit that tracks online misinformation and conservative media, revealed that QAnon influencers were still posting on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Vimeo after a wave of bans on other platforms, most notably Facebook.
QAnon is a baseless far-right conspiracy theory that claims President Donald Trump is secretly fighting a "deep state" cabal of human traffickers. The movement has been linked to $4, and the $4. As QAnon has $4 in popularity this year, tech companies are finally taking action on the conspiracy theory to tamp down its spread.
On Monday afternoon, the four QAnon podcasts Media Matters for America identified on Spotify — "X22 Report," "Indigenous Mike," "Praying Medic," and "Pardon My American" — were still available on the platform. But Spotify removed the podcasts soon after Insider reached out for comment.
A Spotify spokesperson told Insider that the company "prohibits content on the platform that promotes, advocates or incites violence against others," and confirmed that the platform had taken down the four QAnon-related shows.
While the shows did appear on search, attempts to play episodes of the shows yielded an error message.
Spotify has previously been criticized for hosting controversial content, $4 which was the subject of internal debate at the company in September.
