A <keyword id="8940160" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="complete-lockdown">complete lockdown</keyword> has been imposed in Karnataka's <keyword id="140842" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kodagu-district">Kodagu district</keyword> on two weekends (Saturday and Sunday) of this month in view of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, an official said on Saturday. "Rising Covid cases, including deaths have forced the administration to declare complete lockdown across the district on this weekend and next weekend (July 25-26) to contain the deadly virus," an official told IANS on phone from Madikeri. Kodagu is about 240km southwest of Bengaluru in the southern state. "Only shops selling milk, vegetables, fruits, groceries, medicines and other essentials will be open for three hours from 6-9am across the district to allow people to buy their daily needs," said the official. Except personnel on duty and those involved in essential services, movement of people and vehicles will not be allowed to prevent crowding and violating lockdown guidelines like social distancing. "As state-run and private buses will not operate during the weekend, people will not be allowed to commute on their personal vehicles except in emergency," said the official. Pre-scheduled marriages are allowed with the permission of local bodies, as per lockdown guidelines, which stipulate restricting guests to 50 people only. New containment zones have been notified in Bhagavathi Nagar, Chowdeshwari Nagar, Mahdevpet and Hebbattageri in the district. With 10 new cases on Saturday, the district's Covid tally increased to 259, including 140 active after 114 were discharged, while 5 succumbed to the infection so far. In a related development, the district Brahmanara Sangha conducted aDhanavantri Yagna at Annapoorneshwari temple at Gandhinagar in Moornadu, seeking divine intervention to check the virus spread of the virus. Lockdown will also be observed on Sunday across the state, including in Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad and Kalaburagi districts, which are under lockdown for 7-9 days since Tuesday. With record 4,537 cases, the state's Covid tally shot up to 59,652 on Saturday including 36,631 active cases as 21,775 patients have been discharged after recoveries so far, with 1,018 in the day, while 1,240 have succumbed to the virus till date. Weekend lockdown imposed in Karnataka's Covid-hit Kodagu district

<keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> lifted more restrictions from the extended lockdown in 14 'green' districts, which are free from the coronavirus spread, to mitigate hardships of the people, a top official said on Tuesday. "In accordance with the April 14 guidelines of the Central government on relaxing the lockdown restrictions to mitigate public hardship, more activities are allowed in 14 of the 30 districts across the state, which are green spots," said Chief Secretary T.M. Vijay Bhaskar in an order. The 14 'green' districts are Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, Chikmagaluru, Davanagere, Hassan, Haveri, Kodagu, Kolar, Koppal, Ramanagara, Raichur, Shivamogga, <keyword id="48302" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udupi">Udupi</keyword> and Yadgir across the southern state. Industries operating in rural areas and outside the civic limits of the districts except in Ramanagara district can also resume operations. "Similarly, manufacturing and industrial establishments with access control in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Export Oriented Units (EoUs), industrial estates and industrial townships can reopen," said the order. The establishments, however, have to arrange for stay of workers in their premises or adjacent buildings and implement the standard operating protocol as per the guidelines. Employers have to also arrange transport for their employees to the work place in special buses and ensure they observe social distancing. All shops, including those in residential and market complexes, except in multi-brand and single brand malls, can reopen even outside civic limits, with 50 per cent of their workers wearing masks and observing social distancing. In Ballari, Bengaluru Rural, <keyword id="9134888" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chickkaballapur">Chickkaballapur</keyword>, Dharwad, Gadag, Mandya, Tumakuru and <keyword id="73124" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Kannada">Uttar Kannada</keyword> districts, where there no Covid-19 cases and are 'orange' spots, district in-charge ministers will decide on the reopening of shops and industries. Partial relaxation of the lockdown, which began on April 23, will continue in 8 districts of Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bengaluru Urban, Bidar, Dakshina Kannda, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Vijayapura, excluding hotspots and containment zones. Karnataka eases lockdown curbs in 14 green districts

Amid rising Covid cases in the city, the <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> government may have to re-impose the lockdown in Bengaluru after consulting with experts, said a minister on Tuesday. "If the Covid scenario continues to be like this in the days to come, we may have to consider lockdown after consulting experts and taking the chief minister into confidence. No decision has been taken yet," said Health Minister B. Sriramulu. Alarmed by the rising cases in the city, the minister has appealed to the people to cooperate in controlling the virus by following all the safety precautions. On Monday, Chief Minister <keyword id="1555094" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="b-s-yediyurappa">B.S. Yediyurappa</keyword> had directed officials to stringently enforce lockdown in the pockets where the infections are rising. The city civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has sealed down K.R. Market and Kalasipalya Market for 15 days. Meanwhile, Sriramulu said that asymptomatic cases which were being admitted in dedicated Covid hospitals till now will be treated at community halls, schools, marriage halls, hotels and Haj Bhavan. All those facilities have been converted into Covid Care Centres (CCCs) where asymptomatic cases are treated. "As asymptomatic patients will go to CCCs, more beds will be freed up at dedicated Covid hospitals where symptomatic and serious cases can be treated," said Sriramulu. However, he assured that doctors and nurses will be available at CCCs round the clock to take care of the patients. Sriramulu said more senior citizens would be tested in the coming days, including scaling up the testing capacity. "The government has plans to conduct 2,000-3,000 tests in each district with two testing labs," he said. Meanwhile, former chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader <keyword id="2168486" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="H-D-Kumaraswamy">H. D. Kumaraswamy</keyword> has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to impose a 20-day national lockdown. "Today India is among the countries with the highest number of Covid cases and the problem must be seen in conjunction with our high density of population compared to other countries," said Kumaraswamy. He said the selective sealing is not serving the purpose of arresting the pandemic and exhorted that the economy should not get precedence over people's lives. "I urge Karnataka chief minister to immediately announce the lockdown for 20 days, especially for Bengaluru. I also urge him to grant a compensation of at least Rs 5,000 through direct benefit transfer to all daily wage workers including cab and auto drivers and weavers," said Kumaraswamy. Contrasting the voices calling for a lockdown, Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has defended Yediyurappa's decision not to extend the lockdown as it will further weaken the state economy. Savadi said lockdown is not the only way to control the pandemic in the southern state.
